The relationship between systemic inflammation and stoma formation following anterior resection for rectal cancer: a cross-sectional study
Introduction:
There is evidence that temporary defunctioning stoma formation in patients undergoing anterior resection reduces the risk of anastomotic leakage. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between stoma formation, the postoperative systemic inflammatory response and complications following anterior resection for rectal cancer.
Methods:
Data was recorded prospectively for patients who underwent anterior resection for histologically proven rectal cancer, from 2008 to 2015 at a single centre, n = 167. Patients had routine preoperative and postoperative blood sampling including serum C-reactive protein (CRP). Postoperative complications including anastomotic leakage were recorded.
Results:
Of the 167 patients, the majority were male (61%) and over 65 years old (56%) with node negative disease (60%). 36 patients (22%) underwent preoperative neoadjuvant treatment. 100 patients (60%) had a stoma formed at the time of surgery. Stoma formation was significantly associated with male sex (69% vs. 50%, p = 0.017), neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (30% vs 9%, p = 0.001) and open surgery (71% vs. 55%, p = 0.040). Of those 100 patients who had a stoma formed, 80 had it reversed. Permanent stoma was significantly associated with increasing age (p = 0.011), exceeding the established CRP threshold of 150 mg/L on postoperative day 4 (67% vs 37%, p = 0.039), higher incidence of postoperative complications (76% vs 47%, p = 0.035), anastomotic leakage (24% vs 2%, p = 0.003) and higher Clavien Dindo score (p = 0.036).
Conclusions:
There was no significant association between stoma formation during anterior resection and the postoperative systemic inflammatory response. However, in these patients both the postoperative systemic inflammatory response and complications were associated with permanent stoma
Energy scale independence of Koide's relation for quark and lepton masses
Koide's mass relation of charged leptons has been extended to quarks and
neutrinos, and we prove here that this relation is independent of energy scale
in a huge energy range from to . By using the
parameters , and to describe the deviations of quarks and
neutrinos from the exact Koide's relation, we also check the quark-lepton

Alpha Decay Width of Po from a quartetting wave function approach
A microscopic calculation of -cluster preformation probability and
decay width in the typical emitter Po is presented.
Results are obtained by improving a recent approach to describe
preformation in Po [Phys. Rev. C 90, 034304 (2014)] implementing
four-nucleon correlations (quartetting). Using the actually measured density
distribution of the Pb core, the calculated alpha decay width of

Using High Resolution Images from UAV and Satellite Remote Sensing for Best Management Practice Analyses
Best Management Practices (BMPs) are commonly adopted to ameliorate the quality of runoff and reduce the frequency and intensity of flash floods in urban areas. To date, many of the BMP studies are conducted using coarse resolution data. However, the accuracy of such studies may be compromised due to the shortcomings inherent in the input data; as such, the evaluation of the BMP cost-effectiveness may not be accurate. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the improvements of higher resolution images over coarse resolution data in BMP analyses. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was used to collect a more detailed and accurate picture of the digital surface model and digital elevation model. Landsat 8 multi-spectral imagery was classified by object-oriented classification to generate a land use/land cover map. The method used in this study provided more detailed and accurate information of the physical conditions of the study area, an improved subwatershed delineation, a more comprehensive list of the suitable locations for BMPs, and a more reliable estimate of the cost-effectiveness of the BMP ensembles than that generated using coarse resolution data. Using the fine resolution data, this study further determined the utility of the selected BMP ensembles under a changed future climate regime and identified the best BMP and BMP ensemble in reducing urban surface runoff. This method can be especially useful in areas without quality topography and land use data
Bound clusters on top of doubly magic nuclei
An effective particle equation is derived for cases where an
particle is formed on top of a doubly magic nucleus. As an example, we
consider Po with the on top of the Pb core. We will
consider the core nucleus infinitely heavy, so that the particle moves
with respect to a fixed center, i.e., recoil effects are neglected. The fully
quantal solution of the problem is discussed. The approach is inspired by the
THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-R\"{o}pke) wave function concept that has been
successfully applied to light nuclei. Shell model calculations are improved by
including four-particle (-like) correlations that are of relevance when
the matter density becomes low. In the region where the -like cluster
penetrates the core nucleus, the intrinsic bound state wave function transforms
at a critical density into an unbound four-nucleon shell model state.
Exploratory calculations for Po are presented. Such preformed cluster
states are only hardly described by shell model calculations. Reasons for
different physics behavior of an -like cluster with respect to a
deuteron-like cluster are discussed.Comment: 24 pages, 5 figure
Black Holes and Photons with Entropic Force
We study entropic force effects on black holes and photons. We find that
application of an entropic analysis restricts the radial change of a
black hole of radius , due to a test particle of a
Schwartzchild radius moving towards the black hole by near
black body surface, to be given by a relation , or {\Delta R}/{\lambdabar_M} = {\Delta x}/{2 \lambdabar_m}. We
suggest a new rule regarding entropy changes in different dimensions, \Delta
S= 2\pi k D \Delta l /\lambdabar, which unifies Verlinde's conjecture and the
black hole entropy formula. We also propose to extend the entropic force idea
to massless particles such as a photon. We find that there is an entropic force
on a photon of energy , with , and therefore

q-deformed Supersymmetric t-J Model with a Boundary
The q-deformed supersymmetric t-J model on a semi-infinite lattice is
diagonalized by using the level-one vertex operators of the quantum affine
superalgebra . We give the bosonization of the boundary
states. We give an integral expression of the correlation functions of the

Perception of pregnant women on barriers to male involvement in antenatal care in Sekondi, Ghana.
Getting men to be actively involved in Antenatal Care (ANC) has been acknowledged by the World Health Organisation as a key indicator for better maternal health outcomes. We investigated the perception of women about barriers to male involvement in ANC in Sekondi, Ghana. Dwelling on cross-sectional design, we used a sample of 300 pregnant women (adolescents excluded) who had ever attended ANC in five fishing communities in Sekondi. The study was underpinned by a conceptual framework adapted from Doe's conceptual framework of male partner involvement in maternity care. We used questionnaire for the data collection. Both descriptive-frequencies and percentages; and inferential-binary logistic regression analyses were carried out. Seven out of ten (70%) participants indicated high male involvement in ANC. Respondents whose partners were aged 50-59 were less likely to report high male involvement in ANC compared to those whose partners were aged 20-29 years (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = [0.35-0.86], p = 0.03). Those living together with their partners were about two times more likely to report high male involvement in ANC compared to those who did not live with their partners (OR = 1.63, 95% CI = [1.18-3.19], p = 0.01). Participants who identified long waiting time at the health facility as a determinant of male involvement in ANC were less likely to report high male involvement in ANC compared to those who disagreed (OR = 0.57, 95% CI = [0.38-0.85], p = 0.01). The outcome of our study calls for male partner friendly policy driven environment at the various ANC visit points that would make men more comfortable to accompany their partners in accessing ANC services
Investigation for the puzzling abundance pattern of the neutron-capture elements in the ultra metal-poor star: CS 30322-023
The s-enhanced and very metal-poor star CS 30322-023 shows a puzzling
abundance pattern of the neutron-capture elements, i.e. several neutron-capture
elements such as Ba, Pb etc. show enhancement, but other neutron-capture
elements such as Sr, Eu etc. exhibit deficient with respect to iron. The study
to this sample star could make people gain a better understanding of s- and
r-process nucleosynthesis at low metallicity. Using a parametric model, we find
that the abundance pattern of the neutron-capture elements could be best
explained by a star that was polluted by an AGB star and the CS 30322-023
binary system formed in a molecular cloud which had never been polluted by
r-process material. The lack of r-process material also indicates that the AGB
companion cannot have undergone a type-1.5 supernova, and thus must have had an
initial mass below 4.0M, while the strong N overabundance and the
absence of a strong C overabundance indicate that the companion's initial mass
was larger than 2.0M. The smaller s-process component coefficient of
this star illustrates that there is less accreted material of this star from
the AGB companion, and the sample star should be formed in the binary system
with larger initial orbital separation where the accretion-induced collapse
(AIC) mechanism can not work.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure
