The two authors embark on a conversation about how textiles open up space for different kinds of storytelling — understood as central to interpretive research — about violence, memory and transformation in the aftermath of armed conflict. They draw on their respective research and experiences in the context of the armed conflict and fragile peace process in Colombia, where Roxani investigates the politics and hierarchies of victimhood, and Berit is involved in a project that combines narrative practice and textile narratives into a methodology to explore former guerrilla combatants’ subjectivities and wider society’s resonances to their preferred stories. Cosmopolitanism and the culture of peacebuilding

AbstractCosmopolitanism has been argued to be a crucial component of peacebuilding, both with regard to its aims as well as its staff. In a universalist-liberal understanding of the concept, cosmopolitanism is the optimal mind frame for peacebuilders to rebuild post-war societies, due to the tolerance, justice-orientation, and neutrality regarding local cleavages that the concept entails in theory. This article argues, however, that cosmopolitanism cannot be understood outside of its social context, therefore requiring sociological empirical analyses. Drawing on three such sociological concepts, namely elite, glocal, and localisable cosmopolitanism, the article analyses empirically through interviews with peacebuilders in Kosovo whether and in which form these international civil servants display cosmopolitan worldviews. The study concludes that while in theory the localisable variant would be best suited to contribute to locally sensitive, emancipatory peacebuilding, this form of cosmopolitanism is absent in practice. Given the novel, exploratory character of this analysis of hitherto uncharted terrain, the article also discusses in detail how the findings were obtained and in how far they are generalisable.</jats:p

Allerdings besteht eine erstaunliche Tendenz zur unkritischen Verwendung von ICG-Berichten. Folgendes sollte diesbezüglich bedacht werden: Bereits durch die Auswahl der als wichtig herausgestellten Themen beeinflusst die ICG die internationale Wahrnehmung eines Konfliktes und damit eventuell das Agenda-Setting. Bei der Beurteilung des Politisierungsgrades von ICG-Berichten lohnt es sich zu unterscheiden zwischen den meist solide recherchierten Analysen einerseits sowie den politischen Schlussfolgerungen und Handlungsempfehlungen andererseits. Die ICG ist Teil eines 'Beratungsmarktes'. Auch als Non-Profit-Unternehmen konkurriert sie mit ähnlichen Interessengruppen um staatliche und nichtstaatliche Mittel und verwaltet hohe Summen, die zur Heranbildung institutioneller Eigeninteressen beitragen. Die ICG befasst sich mit politischer Symptombekämpfung, indem sie zeitnah Informationen und Handlungsempfehlungen zu akuten Krisen bereitstellt. Nachhaltiger Ursachenbekämpfung und politischen Visionen dagegen gilt nicht ihr Hauptaugenmerk, sie sollten deswegen aber von anderen Akteuren nicht aus den Augen verloren werden." (Autorenreferat
