    The Rise of Plain Language Laws

    When lawmakers enacted 776 plain language laws across the United States, no one noticed. Apart from a handful, these laws went untracked and unstudied. Without study, large questions remain about these laws’ effects and utility, and about how they inform the adoption or rejection of plain language. This Article creates a conceptual framework for plain language laws to set the stage for future empirical research and normative discussions on the value of plain language. It unveils the first nationwide empirical survey of plain language laws to reveal their locations, coverages, and standards. In doing so, the Article creates a systematic method to find these laws. Then it coins a taxonomy of categories and terminology to describe their coverage and standards, thus creating a timely launchpad for future scholarship on domestic and international plain language laws. Along the way, the Article exposes the previously unknown scope of these laws—from election ballots and insurance contracts, to veterans housing and consumer contracts, to regulatory drafting and governor reports. That scope underscores the pervasive influence of plain language across public and private sectors, and over lawyers and non-lawyers alike. Moreover, the survey reveals significant intrastate and interstate variations and trends in coverages and standards. With this knowledge, for the first-time, empirical research can more precisely measure the benefits and costs of plain language laws while controlling for variables. Plus, the Article sets the stage for a forthcoming series of normative assessments on the role and design of plain language laws. Ultimately, the Article reignites a lively discourse on plain language amongst lawmakers, practitioners, and academics

    Using α-Helical Coiled-Coils to Design Nanostructured Metalloporphyrin Arrays

    We have developed a computational design strategy based on the alpha-helical coiled-coil to generate modular peptide motifs capable of assembling into metalloporphyrin arrays of varying lengths. The current study highlights the extension of a two-metalloporphyrin array to a four-metalloporphyrin array through the incorporation of a coiled-coil repeat unit. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the initial design evolves rapidly to a stable structure with a small rmsd compared to the original model. Biophysical characterization reveals elongated proteins of the desired length, correct cofactor stoichiometry, and cofactor specificity. The successful extension of the two-porphyrin array demonstrates how this methodology serves as a foundation to create linear assemblies of organized electrically and optically responsive cofactors

    Solvation and the hidden thermodynamics of a zinc finger probed by nonstandard repair of a protein crevice

    The classical Zn finger contains a phenylalanine at the crux of its three architectural elements: a ÎČ-hairpin, an α-helix, and a Zn2+-binding site. Surprisingly, phenylalanine is not required for high-affinity Zn2+ binding, but instead contributes to the specification of a precise DNA-binding surface. Substitution of phenylalanine by leucine leads to a floppy but native-like structure whose Zn affinity is maintained by marked entropy–enthalpy compensation (Δ ΔH −8.3 kcal/mol and −TΔ ΔS 7.7 kcal/mol). Phenylalanine and leucine differ in shape, size, and aromaticity. To distinguish which features correlate with dynamic stability, we have investigated a nonstandard finger containing cyclohexanylalanine at this site. The structure of the nonstandard finger is similar to that of the native domain. The cyclohexanyl ring assumes a chair conformation, and conformational fluctuations characteristic of the leucine variant are damped. Although the nonstandard finger exhibits a lower affinity for Zn2+ than does the native domain (Δ ΔG −1.2 kcal/mol), leucine-associated perturbations in enthalpy and entropy are almost completely attenuated (Δ ΔH −0.7 kcal/mol and −TΔ ΔS −0.5 kcal/mol). Strikingly, global changes in entropy (as inferred from calorimetry) are in each case opposite in sign from changes in configurational entropy (as inferred from NMR). This seeming paradox suggests that enthalpy–entropy compensation is dominated by solvent reorganization rather than nominal molecular properties. Together, these results demonstrate that dynamic and thermodynamic perturbations correlate with formation or repair of a solvated packing defect rather than type of physical interaction (aromatic or aliphatic) within the core
