Effective computer technology for teaching support in information systems undergraduate education

    No full text
Most of the faculties of a modern University today are frequent or heavy users of Computer Technology. The mini-mainframe culture is established and reinforced by the traditional computer centre in older established universtities as a result of Jong entrenched attitudes related to needs and experiences that originated in the days where the computer science and engineering faculties played a major role in computer technology aquisition. In the newer institutions, in a completely different organisational environment, a computer centre might not even exist. Tight budgets and associated politics in attracting funds, do not allow easily accepted exceptions to the norm for any Division, School, or Faculty.</div

Aim of present work is the investigation of urban planning, and more specifically the presentation and analysis of masterplan type projects, that used today as frame tool, for the urban organisation of European cities. Being impossible to be put in common denominator, due to the variety of country-specific treatment planning systems and the difference between the size and role of cities, this work generally analyzes the strategic plans that are used in order to give directions for the planning in certain European cities, and the modern tendencies in which they are directed. In an effort of comparison with tools of such type in Greece, this study makes an analysis of the Regulatory Plans and the General Urban Plans which are used today as guiding design tools of wider metropolitan areas and municipalities respectively. Thus, their content is presented, and current Regulating Plans and In general Urban Plans in the Greek cities are analyzed, as well as the problems that the planning system in Greece faces today, with their repercussions in the current reality in the cities. In this frame, the planning in the city of Ioannina is presented, and an indicatively master plan is pro-posed, trying to incorporate the new perceptions and directions for the planning in the wider region of city.Κωνσταντίνος Ν. A comparison between 2-D and off-line 3-D ultrasound in the assessment of fetal anatomies: A prospective analysis of 1007 cases

Purpose: To evaluate the use of three-dimensional off-line ultrasonography (3D) as an alternative for examining fetal anatomy and nuchal translucency (NT) in the 1st trimester of pregnancy. Method: A Prospective study of 1007 low risk singleton pregnancies at 11 to 14 weeks of gestation. The gestational age, NT and fetal anatomy (10 anatomic features) were evaluated by off-line three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography after the standard two-dimensional (2D) examination. The results of the two methods were compared using the 2D as a gold standard. Results: In some of the evaluated parameters the 3D method approximates the conventional 2D results. These parameters are the crown-rump length (CRL), the skull-brain anatomy (96.8%), the spine (89.7%), the upper (91.1%) and lower limbs (87%) and the fetal abdomen (98.5%). Some of the anatomic features revealed statistically significant differences in favor of the 2D examination such as the nasal bone (70.6% with the 3D), the stomach (79.6%) and the urinary bladder (59.6%). The NT was measured with the 3D in 87.5% of cases; although in only 60% values were accurate to the corresponding 2D. Conclusion: The off-line assessment of 3D ultrasound volumes can accurately date gestation and satisfactorily visualize fetal anatomy in about 75% of cases. Yet it seems insufficient for the 1st trimester examination, although with modifications and improvements it might serve a potential screening tool especially for areas with difficult access to advanced prenatal diagnosis. © 2012-IOS Press and the authors.
