    The odd-dimensional Goldberg Conjecture

An odd-dimensional version of the Goldberg conjecture was formulated and proved by Boyer and Galicki, using an orbifold analogue of Sekigawa's formulas, and an approximation argument of K-contact structures with quasi-regular ones. We provide here another proof of this result and give some applications.Comment: An application to the main result adde

Readiness and recovery : switching between methadone and buprenorphine/naloxone for the treatment of opioid use disorder : a 90 credit thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Nursing at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Opioid substitution treatment is an effective form of treatment for opioid use disorders. Long acting opiates are used as part of treatment with methadone and buprenorphine/naloxone (BUP/NX) most frequently prescribed. Current evidence suggests that BUP/NX is better than no treatment, but that methadone is marginally more effective for retention in treatment. Benefits of BUP/NX include greater ease in ceasing treatment and less use of illicit opiates while in treatment as compared to methadone. As yet there is little research asking service users about their experiences. This project aims to understand citizen perspectives of what it was like to receive BUP/NX for the treatment of opioid use disorder. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to extract themes from semi-structured interviews of seven randomly selected participants. To be selected, participants had a current diagnosis of opioid use disorder, and had been prescribed BUP/NX during the course of their treatment. The project specifically sets out to consider how citizens viewed BUP/NX as a treatment option for opioid use disorder. Thematic analysis extracted four themes that were interpreted in terms of the harm minimization and the recovery model. The four themes were: drivers for opioid substitution treatment change; readiness for BUP/NX substitution treatment; absence of effect from BUP/NX; and an increased sense of citizenship on BUP/NX. This study identified a number of factors that impacted on the participants’ decision making when it came to switching between methadone and BUP/NX for the treatment of their opioid use disorder. This thesis discusses these factors and locates them within the current literature on the topic. The thesis concludes by saying that methadone is most effective for those people who still seek sedation and currently wish to continue using other opioids, and BUP/NX is most effective for people who no longer wish to experience sedation, and see opioid abstinence as an end point in their recovery. This thesis also concludes that as an individual’s treatment expectations change, these changes are important to consider when determining medication selection. Recommendations are offered, as is a treatment model, which is intended to help with medication decision-making. Future research directions are also suggested

Polymer matrix composites on LDEF experiments M0003-9 and M0003-10

    Get PDF
Over 250 polymer matrix composites were exposed to the natural space environment on Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) experiments M0003-9 and 10. The experiments included a wide variety of epoxy, thermoplastic, polyimide, and bismalimide matrix composites reinforced with graphite, glass, or organic fibers. A review of the significant observations and test results obtained to date is presented. Estimated recession depths from atomic oxygen exposure are reported and the resulting surface morphologies are discussed. The effects of the LDEF exposure on the flexural strength and modulus, short beam shear strength, and coefficient of thermal expansion of several classes of bare and coated composites are reviewed. Lap shear data are presented for composite-to-composite and composite-to-aluminum alloy samples that were prepared using different bonding techniques and subsequently flown on LDEF

Teachers\u27 Perceptions and Experiences Consulting with School Counselors: A Qualitative Study

    Get PDF
School counselor–teacher consultation is an efficient strategy for school counselors to indirectly serve students on their caseload. Teachers\u27 perceptions are crucial in examining this consultation process. This qualitative study examined elementary school teachers\u27 perceptions and experiences of school counselor–teacher consultation. The researchers identified three themes: (a) school counselors prioritizing relationships, (b) school counselors taking initiative, and (c) school counselors\u27 specialization. The researchers discuss implications for school counseling practice, including strategies for facilitating consultation with teachers

Observations on the action of Iodine

While I was resident physician in the wards of the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, Dr. Chalmers Watson suggested I should study the injection of iodine intravenously. I chose twelve cases at random, and the following is an account of the preparation used; the technique; and the results. The preparation used consisted of:- Iodine i drachm; Potassium Iodide 1 drachm; Distilled Water 5 ounces; Minims 20 of the above in 10 cc. Normal Saline was the quantity used for each injection, i.e. gr. 0.5 of Iodine.THE TECHNIQUE: The injection was given intravenously at 11 A.M. For some days prior to the injection all patients were placed on a uniform diet, etc. with a view to eliminating as far as possible any error arising from altered environment. Each experiment lasted three days.Observations were made on temperature, respiration rate, pulse rate, systolic and diastolic pressure; urine per hour (quantity, specific gravity, urea concentration, and abnormal constituents); influence on the leucocyte count; anti the Basal Metabolic Rate ( B.M.R.)Careful observations were taken at frequent intervals throughout each day, noting the patients general condition, size of thyroid, and any variations in the symptomatology, both subjective and objective. On the first day control observations were made. On the second day Iodine was administered intravenously at 11 A.M., and the results carefully studied; while on the third day observations were made on similar lines. For the following few days the patients" condition was carefully watched

Nike and New York City could change the licensing game for cities across the world

As they compete with one another for new residents and tourists, how US cities and municipalities brand themselves has become more and more important. In 2019, the City of New York partnered with the Nike enabling the sportswear company to use the city’s departmental likenesses on their merchandise. M. Blair Thomas looks at how city managers are using such partnerships to create revenues and broader questions over branding, naming rights and the autonomy of public organizations

In this paper, we explore the competitive significance of both bundled and loyalty discounts. The paper proceeds as follows. In Section II, we examine the antitrust treatment of both bundled discounts and loyalty discounts in the United States. In Section III, we examine bundled discounts and discuss their competitive significance. In Section IV, we examine loyalty discounts as well as their competitive significance. In Section V, we suggest that the courts evaluate bundled discounts and loyalty discounts under the Rule of Reason. In Section VI, we close with some concluding remarks and policy recommendations

Team Production in Business Organizations: An Introduction

    Get PDF
For the past two decades, legal and economic scholarship has tended to assume that the central economic problem addressed by corporation law is getting managers and directors to act as faithful agents for shareholders. There are other important economic problems faced by business firms, however. This article introduces a Symposium that explores one of those alternate economic problems: the problem of team production . Team production problems can arise whenever three conditions are met: (1) economic production requires the combined inputs of two or more individuals; (2) at least some of these inputs are team-specific, meaning they have a significantly higher value when used in the team than in their next best use; and (3) the gains resulting from team production are non-separable, making it difficult to attribute any particular portion to any single team member?s contribution. In such situations, it can be difficult or impossible for team members to draft explicit contracts that protect their team-specific investments from other team members\u27 opportunism. Thus the nine articles in the Symposium explore the implications of team production analysis for a wide variety of business organizations, including public corporations, private companies, multinational firms, and venture capital firms
