    UV Interstellar Absorption Lines towards the Starburst Dwarf Galaxy NGC 1705

    Archival Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph low-resolution spectra of NGC 1705, with wavelength ranges 1170.3 to 1461.7 A and 1453.5 to 1740.1 A and a velocity resolution of about 100 km\s, have been used to derive the velocity structure and equivalent widths of the absorption lines of Si II 1190.42, 1260.42, 1304.37 and 1526.71 A, S II 1253 , Al II 1670.79 Aand Fe II 1608.45 A in this sightline. Three relatively narrow absorption components are seen at LSR velocities --20 km/s, 260 km/sand 540 km/s. Arguments are presented to show these absorption features are interstellar rather than stellar in origin based on a comparison with the C III 1175.7 A absorption feature. We identify the --20 km/s component with Milky Way disk/halo gas and the 260 km/s component with an isolated high-velocity cloud HVC 487. This small HVC is located about 10 degrees from the H I gas which envelops the Magellanic Clouds and the Magellanic Stream (MS). The (Si/H) ratio for this HVC is > 0.6 (Si/H)solar which together with velocity agreement, suggests association with the Magellanic Cloud and MS gas. H-alpha emission line kinematics of NGC 1705 show the presence of a kpc-scale expanding supershell of ionized gas centered on the central nucleus with a blue-shifted emission component at 540 km/s (Meurer et al. 1992). We identify the 540 km/s absorption component seen in the GHRS spectra with the front side of this expanding, ionized supershell. The most striking feature of this component is strong Si II and Al II absorption but weak Fe II 1608 A absorption. The low Fe II column density derived is most likely intrinsic since it cannot be accounted for by ionization corrections or dust depletion.     The Physical Characteristics of the Small-Scale Interstellar Structure towards Mu Crucis

    We present HST/GHRS echelle observations of multiple interstellar lines of CI, MgI, CrII, and ZnII towards both stars in the mu Cru binary system. Despite large differences in the profiles of the neutral species, no significant variations between the stars are seen in the CrII and ZnII line profiles. In particular, the ZnII absorption observed at -8.6 km/sec towards mu Cru is constant despite greatly enhanced columns of the neutral species at this velocity towards mu^1 Cru. An analysis of the fine-structure excitation of CI in this cloud implies that the density is n_H < 250 cm^{-3}. From the lack of variation in the (optical) NaI D2 line profiles towards mu^1 and mu^2 Cru in spectra taken 21 months apart, we can place a lower limit to the size of the structures of ~10 AU. These results are discussed in the context of recent radio and optical studies of apparently pervasive high density small-scale interstellar structure.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the Astrophysical Journal (Letters

    Experimental investigation of the effects of load path on the life of fretting fatigue contacts

    Slip and changes to stresses within a load cycle both contribute to damage in fretting contacts. By considering conditions for slip in normal-bulk loaded fretting contacts, experiments were performed wherein the contact slip varied, whilst changes to stress were modest. This was achieved by keeping the load endpoints constant but altering the load path. Experiments showed stark contrast in life between tests permitting slip and those prohibiting it. FE models were used to plot slip and stress components, revealing that the differences in life were due to a combination of slip and changes in shear traction. A method is presented by which the crack position can be measured, by adding a feature to the pad to produce a datum mark

    Possible Detection of OVI from the LMC Superbubble N70

    We present FUSE observations toward four stars in the LMC superbubble N70 and compare these spectra to those of four comparison targets located in nearby field and diffuse regions. The N70 sight lines show OVI 1032 absorption that is consistently stronger than the comparison sight lines by ~60%. We attribute the excess column density (logN_OVI=14.03 cm^-2) to hot gas within N70, potentially the first detection of OVI associated with a superbubble. In a survey of 12 LMC sight lines, Howk et al. (2002a) concluded that there was no correlation between ISM morphology and N_OVI. We present a reanalysis of their measurements combined with our own and find a clear difference between the superbubble and field samples. The five superbubbles probed to date with FUSE show a consistently higher mean N_OVI than the 12 non-superbubble sight lines, though both samples show equivalent scatter from halo variability. Possible ionization mechanisms for N70 are discussed, and we conclude that the observed OVI could be the product of thermal conduction at the interface between the hot, X-ray emitting gas inside the superbubble and the cooler, photoionized material making up the shell seen prominently in Halpha. We calculate the total hydrogen density n_H implied by our OVI measurements and find a value consistent with expectations.     Investigation of Substituted-Benzene Dopants for Charge Exchange Ionization of Nonpolar Compounds by Atmospheric Pressure Photoionization

    Atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) using a dopant enables both polar and nonpolar compounds to be analyzed by LC/MS. To date, the charge exchange ionization pathway utilized for nonpolar compounds has only been efficient under restrictive conditions, mainly because the usual charge exchange reagent ions—the dopant photoions themselves—tend to be consumed in proton transfer reactions with solvent and/or dopant neutrals. This research aims to elucidate the factors affecting the reactivities of substituted-benzene dopant ions; another, overriding, objective is to discover new dopants for better implementing charge exchange ionization in reversed-phase LC/MS applications. The desirable properties for a charge exchange dopant include low reactivity of its photoions with solvent and dopant neutrals and high ionization energy (IE). Reactivity tests were performed for diverse substituted-benzene compounds, with substituents ranging from strongly electron withdrawing (EW) to strongly electron donating (ED). The results indicate that both the tendency of a dopant's photoions to be lost through proton transfer reactions and its IE depend on the electron donating/withdrawing properties of its substituent(s): ED groups decrease reactivity and IE, while EW groups increase reactivity and IE. Exceptions to the reactivity trend for dopants with ED groups occur when the substituent is itself acidic. All told, the desirable properties for a charge exchange dopant tend towards mutual exclusivity. Of the singly-substituted benzenes tested, chloro- and bromobenzene provide the best compromise between low reactivity and high IE. Several fluoroanisoles, with counteracting EW and ED groups, may also provide improved performance relative to the established dopants

    A Frequency-Domain Substructure System Identification Algorithm

    A new frequency-domain system identification algorithm is presented for system identification of substructures, such as payloads to be flown aboard the Space Shuttle. In the vibration test, all interface degrees of freedom where the substructure is connected to the carrier structure are either subjected to active excitation or are supported by a test stand with the reaction forces measured. The measured frequency-response data is used to obtain a linear, viscous-damped model with all interface-degree of freedom entries included. This model can then be used to validate analytical substructure models. This procedure makes it possible to obtain not only the fixed-interface modal data associated with a Craig-Bampton substructure model, but also the data associated with constraint modes. With this proposed algorithm, multiple-boundary-condition tests are not required, and test-stand dynamics is accounted for without requiring a separate modal test or finite element modeling of the test stand. Numerical simulations are used in examining the algorithm's ability to estimate valid reduced-order structural models. The algorithm's performance when frequency-response data covering narrow and broad frequency bandwidths is used as input is explored. Its performance when noise is added to the frequency-response data and the use of different least squares solution techniques are also examined. The identified reduced-order models are also compared for accuracy with other test-analysis models and a formulation for a Craig-Bampton test-analysis model is also presented

    In this paper (he transformed spaces of visually impaired and blind people is explored through a detailed analysis of interview transcripts with twenty seven visually impaired people living in or around Belfast. Data were collected using a structured open-ended interview and were analysed within NUD-IST, a qualitative data analysis package. Analysis revealed that visually impaired people become spatially confused (e.g. lost or disorientated) for two primary reasons. "Self-produced" confusion is spatial confusion caused by the misperception/miscognition of a route (e.g. miscounting intersections). "Situational" confusion is spatial confusion caused by a permanent or temporary localised occurrences such as road works, vehicles parked on pavements, and street furniture. Both types of spatial confusion were found to induce feelings of fear and anxiety, leading to a loss of selfconfidence, embarrassment and frustration, which in turn led to less independent travel and exploration, and constrained patterns of spatial behaviour. Respondents detailed a number of strategies for coping with spatial confusion. In addition, they assessed methods to make Belfast more navigable including environmental modifications and orientation and mobility aid
