    Video normals from colored lights

    We present an algorithm and the associated single-view capture methodology to acquire the detailed 3D shape, bends, and wrinkles of deforming surfaces. Moving 3D data has been difficult to obtain by methods that rely on known surface features, structured light, or silhouettes. Multispectral photometric stereo is an attractive alternative because it can recover a dense normal field from an untextured surface. We show how to capture such data, which in turn allows us to demonstrate the strengths and limitations of our simple frame-to-frame registration over time. Experiments were performed on monocular video sequences of untextured cloth and faces with and without white makeup. Subjects were filmed under spatially separated red, green, and blue lights. Our first finding is that the color photometric stereo setup is able to produce smoothly varying per-frame reconstructions with high detail. Second, when these 3D reconstructions are augmented with 2D tracking results, one can register both the surfaces and relax the homogenous-color restriction of the single-hue subject. Quantitative and qualitative experiments explore both the practicality and limitations of this simple multispectral capture system

    Deep Generative Inpainting with Comparative Sample Augmentation

    Recent advances in deep learning techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have achieved breakthroughs in the problem of semantic image inpainting, the task of reconstructing missing pixels. While more effective than conventional approaches, deep learning models require large datasets and computational resources for training, and inpainting quality varies considerably when training data differs in size and diversity. To address these problems, we present an inpainting strategy called Comparative Sample Augmentation, which enhances the quality of the training set by filtering irrelevant images and constructing additional images using information about the surrounding regions of the target image. Experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that our method extends the applicability of deep inpainting models to training sets with varying levels of diversity, while enhancing the inpainting quality as measured by qualitative and quantitative metrics for a large class of deep models, with little need for model-specific consideration

    Visual change detection on tunnel linings

    We describe an automated system for detecting, localising, clustering and ranking visual changes on tunnel surfaces. The system is designed to provide assistance to expert human inspectors carrying out structural health monitoring and maintenance on ageing tunnel networks. A three-dimensional tunnel surface model is first recovered from a set of reference images using Structure from Motion techniques. New images are localised accurately within the model and changes are detected versus the reference images and model geometry. We formulate the problem of detecting changes probabilistically and evaluate the use of different feature maps and a novel geometric prior to achieve invariance to noise and nuisance sources such as parallax and lighting changes. A clustering and ranking method is proposed which efficiently presents detected changes and further improves the inspection efficiency. System performance is assessed on a real data set collected using a low-cost prototype capture device and labelled with ground truth. Results demonstrate that our system is a step towards higher frequency visual inspection at a reduced cost.The authors gratefully acknowledge the support by Toshiba Research Europe.This is the accepted manuscript.     Color Photometric Stereo for Multicolored Surfaces

    We present a multispectral photometric stereo method for capturing geometry of deforming surfaces. A novel photometric calibration technique allows calibration of scenes containing multiple piecewise constant chromaticities. This method estimates per-pixel photometric properties, then uses a RANSAC-based approach to estimate the dominant chromaticities in the scene. A likelihood term is developed linking surface normal, image intensity and photometric properties, which allows estimating the number of chromaticities present in a scene to be framed as a model estimation problem. The Bayesian Information Criterion is applied to automatically estimate the number of chromaticities present during calibration. A two-camera stereo system provides low resolution geometry, allowing the likelihood term to be used in segmenting new images into regions of constant chromaticity. This segmentation is carried out in a Markov Random Field framework and allows the correct photometric properties to be used at each pixel to estimate a dense normal map. Results are shown on several challenging real-world sequences, demonstrating state-of-the-art results using only two cameras and three light sources.
