Discrete Nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger Breathers in a Phonon Bath
We study the dynamics of the discrete nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger lattice
initialized such that a very long transitory period of time in which standard
Boltzmann statistics is insufficient is reached. Our study of the nonlinear
system locked in this {\em non-Gibbsian} state focuses on the dynamics of
discrete breathers (also called intrinsic localized modes). It is found that
part of the energy spontaneously condenses into several discrete breathers.
Although these discrete breathers are extremely long lived, their total number
is found to decrease as the evolution progresses. Even though the total number
of discrete breathers decreases we report the surprising observation that the
energy content in the discrete breather population increases. We interpret
these observations in the perspective of discrete breather creation and
annihilation and find that the death of a discrete breather cause effective
energy transfer to a spatially nearby discrete breather. It is found that the
concepts of a multi-frequency discrete breather and of internal modes is
crucial for this process. Finally, we find that the existence of a discrete
breather tends to soften the lattice in its immediate neighborhood, resulting
in high amplitude thermal fluctuation close to an existing discrete breather.
This in turn nucleates discrete breather creation close to a already existing
discrete breather

Integrity static analysis of COTS/SOUP
This paper describes the integrity static analysis approach developed to support the justification of commercial off-the-shelf software (COTS) used in a safety-related system. The static analysis was part of an overall software qualification programme, which also included the work reported in our paper presented at Safecomp 2002. Integrity static analysis focuses on unsafe language constructs and “covert” flows, where one thread can affect the data or control flow of another thread. The analysis addressed two main aspects: the internal integrity of the code (especially for the more critical functions), and the intra-component integrity, checking for covert channels. The analysis process was supported by an aggregation of tools, combined and engineered to support the checks done and to scale as necessary. Integrity static analysis is feasible for industrial scale software, did not require unreasonable resources and we provide data that illustrates its contribution to the software qualification programme
Ill-posedness in the Einstein equations
It is shown that the formulation of the Einstein equations widely in use in
numerical relativity, namely, the standard ADM form, as well as some of its
variations (including the most recent conformally-decomposed version), suffers
from a certain but standard type of ill-posedness. Specifically, the norm of
the solution is not bounded by the norm of the initial data irrespective of the
data. A long-running numerical experiment is performed as well, showing that
the type of ill-posedness observed may not be serious in specific practical
applications, as is known from many numerical simulations.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Journal of

A Rich Example of Geometrically Induced Nonlinearity: From Rotobreathers and Kinks to Moving Localized Modes and Resonant Energy Transfer
We present an experimentally realizable, simple mechanical system with linear
interactions whose geometric nature leads to nontrivial, nonlinear dynamical
equations. The equations of motion are derived and their ground state
structures are analyzed. Selective ``static'' features of the model are
examined in the context of nonlinear waves including rotobreathers and
kink-like solitary waves. We also explore ``dynamic'' features of the model
concerning the resonant transfer of energy and the role of moving intrinsic
localized modes in the process
An SMLLC Conundrum: Disregarded for Federal Tax Purposes but Not in Federal Court
In Federal Court, the only member of a SMLLC may not represent the SMLLC unless that owner is also a lawyer. To do so exposes the SMLLC to dismissal as well as the owner to the unauthorized practice of law. The article explores the implications of these rules to small closely held LLCs
