    Bogoliubov transformations and exact isolated solutions for simple non-adiabatic Hamiltonians

    We present a new method for finding isolated exact solutions of a class of non-adiabatic Hamiltonians of relevance to quantum optics and allied areas. Central to our approach is the use of Bogoliubov transformations of the bosonic fields in the models.     The onset of intermediate states (denaturation bubbles) and their role during the melting transition of DNA are studied using the Peyrard-Bishop-Daxuois model by Monte Carlo simulations with no adjustable parameters. Comparison is made with previously published experimental results finding excellent agreement.     Phase Transitions in the Spin-Half J_1--J_2 Model

    The coupled cluster method (CCM) is a well-known method of quantum many-body theory, and here we present an application of the CCM to the spin-half J_1--J_2 quantum spin model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbour interactions on the linear chain and the square lattice. We present new results for ground-state expectation values of such quantities as the energy and the sublattice magnetisation. The presence of critical points in the solution of the CCM equations, which are associated with phase transitions in the real system, is investigated. Completely distinct from the investigation of the critical points, we also make a link between the expansion coefficients of the ground-state wave function in terms of an Ising basis and the CCM ket-state correlation coefficients. We are thus able to present evidence of the breakdown, at a given value of J_2/J_1, of the Marshall-Peierls sign rule which is known to be satisfied at the pure Heisenberg point (J_2 = 0) on any bipartite lattice. For the square lattice, our best estimates of the points at which the sign rule breaks down and at which the phase transition from the antiferromagnetic phase to the frustrated phase occurs are, respectively, given (to two decimal places) by J_2/J_1 = 0.26 and J_2/J_1 = 0.61.Comment: 28 pages, Latex, 2 postscript figure

    An exploration of social and economic outcome and associated health-related quality of life after critical illness in general intensive care unit survivors: a 12-month follow-up study.

    INTRODUCTION: The socio-economic impact of critical illnesses on patients and their families in Europe has yet to be determined. The aim of this exploratory study was to estimate changes in family circumstances, social and economic stability, care requirements and access to health services for patients during their first 12 months after ICU discharge. METHODS: Multi-center questionnaire-based study of survivors of critical illness at 6 and 12 months after ICU discharge. RESULTS: Data for 293 consenting patients who spent greater than 48 hours in one of 22 UK ICUs were obtained at 6 and 12 months post-ICU discharge. There was little evidence of a change in accommodation or relationship status between pre-admission and 12 months following discharge from an ICU. A negative impact on family income was reported by 33% of all patients at 6 months and 28% at 12 months. There was nearly a 50% reduction in the number of patients who reported employment as their sole source of income at 12 months (19% to 11%) compared with pre-admission. One quarter of patients reported themselves in need of care assistance at 6 months and 22% at 12 months. The majority of care was provided by family members (80% and 78%, respectively), for half of whom there was a negative impact on employment. Amongst all patients receiving care, 26% reported requiring greater than 50 hours a week. Following discharge, 79% of patients reported attending their primary care physician and 44% had seen a community nurse. Mobility problems nearly doubled between pre-admission and 6 months (32% to 64%). Furthermore, 73% reported moderate or severe pain at 12 months and 44% remained significantly anxious or depressed. CONCLUSIONS: Survivors of critical illness in the UK face a negative impact on employment and commonly have a care requirement after discharge from hospital. This has a corresponding negative impact on family income. The majority of the care required is provided by family members. This effect was apparent by 6 months and had not materially improved by 12 months.     Healing Length and Bubble Formation in DNA

    We have recently suggested that the probability for the formation of thermally activated DNA bubbles is, to a very good approximation, proportional to the number of soft AT pairs over a length L(n) that depend on the size nn of the bubble and on the temperature of the DNA. Here we clarify the physical interpretation of this length by relating it to the (healing) length that is required for the effect of a base-pair defect to become neligible. This provides a simple criteria to calculate L(n) for bubbles of arbitrary size and for any temperature of the DNA. We verify our findings by exact calculations of the equilibrium statistical properties of the Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois model. Our method permits calculations of equilibrium thermal openings with several order of magnitude less numerical expense as compared with direct evaluations

    Validity and reliability of a phone App and stopwatch for the measurement of 505 change of direction performance: a test-retest study design

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the validity and reliability of a phone app (named: COD timer) and stopwatches for the measurement of change of direction (COD) performance. Methods: Sixty-two youth basketball players (age: 15.9 ± 1.4 yrs, height: 178.8 ± 11.0 cm, body mass: 70.0 ± 14.1 kg) performed six trials of 505 COD test (with the left side being the plant leg first, then the right side). The completion time was measured simultaneously via timing gates (with error correction processing algorithms), the phone app and stopwatches. Results: There was an almost perfect correlation and agreement between timing gates and COD timer (r = 0.978; SEE = 0.035 s; LoA =-0.08~0.06 s), but a lower correlation and agreement between timing gates and stopwatch (r = 0.954; SEE = 0.050 s; LoA =-0.17~0.04 s) with statistical significance in completion time (ES = 1.29, 95%CI: 1.15-1.43, p < 0.01). The coefficient of variation revealed similar level of dispersion between the three timing devices (timing gates: 6.58%; COD timer: 6.32%; stopwatch: 6.71%). Inter-observer reliability (ICC = 0.991) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.998) were excellent in COD timer, while the inter-observer reliability was lower (ICC = 0.890) in the stopwatches. Conclusion: In the 505 COD test, the COD timer was able to provide a valid and reliable measurement. On the contrary, stopwatch was not recommended because of large error. Thus, if timing gates are unavailable, practitioners can adopt the COD timer app to assess 505 COD speed times

    Inferring meta-covariates in classification

    This paper develops an alternative method for gene selection that combines model based clustering and binary classification. By averaging the covariates within the clusters obtained from model based clustering, we define “meta-covariates” and use them to build a probit regression model, thereby selecting clusters of similarly behaving genes, aiding interpretation. This simultaneous learning task is accomplished by an EM algorithm that optimises a single likelihood function which rewards good performance at both classification and clustering. We explore the performance of our methodology on a well known leukaemia dataset and use the Gene Ontology to interpret our results

    Valley polarization and susceptibility of composite fermions around nu=3/2

    We report magnetotransport measurements of fractional quantum Hall states in an AlAs quantum well around Landau level filling factor nu = 3/2, demonstrating that the quasiparticles are composite Fermions (CFs) with a valley degree of freedom. By monitoring the valley level crossings for these states as a function of applied symmetry-breaking strain, we determine the CF valley susceptibility and polarization. The data can be explained well by a simple Landau level fan diagram for CFs, and are in nearly quantitative agreement with the results reported for CF spin polarization.Comment: to appear in Phys.
