    Theoretical Uncertainties in Gamma_sl(b->u)

    Full text link
    I review the existing theoretical uncertainties in relating the semileptonic decay width in b->u transitions to the underlying Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing element |V_ub|. The theoretical error bars are only a few percent in |V_ub|, with uncertainties from the impact of the nonperturbative effects nearly negligible.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX; discussion of 1/m_b^3 effects is expanded. On the Determination of Vub|V_{ub}| from Inclusive Semileptonic Decay Spectra

    Full text link
    We propose a model independent method to determine Vub|V_{ub}| from the energy spectrum of the charged lepton in inclusive semileptonic BB decays. The method includes perturbative QCD corrections as well as nonperturbative ones.Comment: LaTeX, 19 pages, 8 figures appended after \end{document} as uu-encoded and compressed .eps files, uses epsf, Technion-PH-94/9, CERN-TH.7308/9

    Two-loop QCD corrections to semileptonic b decays at maximal recoil

    Full text link
    We present a complete O(αs2)O(\alpha_s^2) correction to the differential width of the inclusive semileptonic decay bclνlb\to cl\nu_l at the kinematical point of vanishing invariant mass of the leptons, q2=0q^2=0. Together with the recently computed O(αs2)O(\alpha_s^2) correction at the upper boundary of the lepton invariant mass spectrum, this new information permits an estimate of the O(αs2)O(\alpha_s^2) effect in the total inclusive semileptonic decay width bclνlb\to cl\nu_l. We argue that the non-BLM part of the O(αs2)O(\alpha_s^2) correction gives at most 1% correction to the inclusive semileptonic decay width bclνlb\to cl\nu_l. This significantly improves the credibility of extracting Vcb|V_{cb}| from the inclusive semileptonic decays of the b-hadrons.Comment: 8 pages, revte

    Hadron Spectra for Semileptonic Heavy Quark Decay

    Get PDF
    We calculate the leading perturbative and power corrections to the hadronic invariant mass and energy spectra in semileptonic heavy hadron decays. We apply our results to the BB system. Moments of the invariant mass spectrum, which vanish in the parton model, probe gluon bremsstrahlung and nonperturbative effects. Combining our results with recent data on BB meson branching ratios, we obtain a lower bound Λˉ>410MeV\bar\Lambda>410\,{\rm MeV} and an upper bound mbpole<4.89m_b^{\rm pole}<4.89\,GeV. The Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie scale setting procedure suggests that higher order perturbative corrections are small for bottom decay, and even tractable for charm decay.Comment: 24 pages, uses REVTeX, 5 EPS figures embedded with epsf.sty, slightly modified version to appear in Phys. Higher Order Power Corrections in Inclusive B Decays

    Full text link
    We discuss order 1/m_b^4 and 1/m_b^5 corrections in inclusive semileptonic decay of a BB meson. We identify relevant hadronic matrix elements of dimension seven and eight and estimate them using the ground-state saturation approximation. Within this approach the effects on the integrated rate and on kinematic moments are estimated. The overall relative shift in V_{cb} turns out about +0.4% as applied to the existing fits. Similar estimates are presented for B -> X_s+\gamma decays.Comment: 30 pages, 16 figure

    Four-fermion heavy quark operators and light current amplitudes in heavy flavor hadrons

    We introduce and study the properties of the "color-straight" four-quark operators containing heavy and light quark fields. They are of the form (\bar b\Gamma_b b)(\bar q\Gamma_q q) where both brackets are color singlets. Their expectation values include the bulk of the nonfactorizable contributions to the nonleptonic decay widths of heavy hadrons. The expectation values of the color-straight operators in the heavy hadrons are related to the momentum integrals of the elastic light-quark formfactors of the respective heavy hadron. We calculate the asymptotic behavior of the light-current formfactors of heavy hadrons and show that the actual decrease is 1/(q^2)^3/2 rather than 1/q^4. The two-loop hybrid anomalous dimensions of the four-quark operators and their mixing (absent in the first loop) are obtained. Using plausible models for the elastic formfactors, we estimate the expectation values of the color-straight operators in the heavy mesons and baryons. Improved estimates will be possible in the future with new data on the radiative decays of heavy hadrons. We give the Wilson coefficients of the four-fermion operators in the 1/m_b expansion of the inclusive widths and discuss the numerical predictions. Estimates of the nonfactorizable expectation values are given.Comment: 51 pages. The case of flavor-singlet operators is added for the two-loop anomalous dimension

    Semileptonic B Decays and Determination of |Vub|

    Full text link
    Semileptonic decays of the B mesons provide an excellent probe for the weak and strong interactions of the bottom quark. The large data samples collected at the B Factories have pushed the experimental studies of the semileptonic B decays to a new height and stimulated significant theoretical developments. I review recent progresses in this fast-evolving field, with an emphasis on the determination of the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element |Vub|.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Mod. Nonperturbative QCD Contributions to the Semileptonic Decay Width of the B Meson

    Get PDF
    Nonperturbative QCD contributions to the inclusive semileptonic decay of the B meson consist of the dynamic and kinematic components. We calculate the decay width in an approach based on the light-cone expansion and the heavy quark effective theory, which is able to include both components of nonperturbative QCD contributions. The kinematic component results in the phase-space extension and is shown to be quantitatively crucial, which could increase the decay width significantly. We find that the semileptonic decay width is enhanced by long-distance strong interactions by +(9\pm 6)%. This analysis is used to determine the CKM matrix element |V_{cb}| with a controlled theoretical error. Implications of the phase-space effects for the nonleptonic decay widths of b hadrons are briefly discussed. The experimental evidence for the phase-space effects is pointed out.Comment: 16 pages, Latex, 3 eps figures included, published version (discussion extended, references updated, the main result unchanged

    1/m_b^2 correction to the left-right lepton polarization asymmetry in the decay B -> X_s mu^+ mu^-

    Full text link
    Using a known result by Falk et al. for the 1/m_b^2 correction to the dilepton invariant mass spectrum in the decay B \rightarrow X_s \mu^+ \mu^-, we calculate the 1/m_b^2 correction to the left-right muon polarization asymmetry in this decay. Employing an up-to-date range of values for the non-perturbative parameter \lambda_1, we find that the correction is much smaller than it should have been expected from the previous work by Falk et al.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures included. Hadronic Spectral Moments in Semileptonic B Decays With a Lepton Energy Cut

    Get PDF
    We compute the first two moments of the final hadronic invariant mass in inclusive semileptonic B decay, in the presence of a cut on the charged lepton energy. These moments may be measured directly by experiments at the Upsilon(4S) using the neutrino reconstruction technique, which requires such a cut. Measurement of these moments will place constraints on the nonperturbative parameters \bar\Lambda and \lambda_1, which are relevant for extracting the quark masses m_b and m_c, as well as the CKM angle V_cb. We include terms of order \alpha_s^2\beta_0 and 1/m_b^3 in the operator product expansion, and use the latter to estimate the theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of \bar\Lambda and \lambda_1.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, REVTe
