This chapter introduces the BeiDou (COMPASS) Navigation
Satellite System from its early stage as
a demonstration system to its evolution to a global
system. First, the development strategy and basic
principle of BeiDou Demonstration System are reviewed.
Its basic performance is given in details.
Second, the basic information of BeiDou (regional)
system including constellation, frequency, coordinate
reference system, and time datum is
described. Its initial performance is evaluated by
using single-point positioning, code and carrier
phase differential positioning. Some application
examples are introduced. Third, the BeiDou (Global)
Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is described. Position
dilution of precision is analyzed and BeiDou’s
contribution is summarized. At last, Chinese Area
Positioning System is briefly introduced
