The rise of services sector as the most dynamic sector of the Indian Economy has in many ways been a revolution. While the share of services in India’s GDP has risen over the post-independence period a marked acceleration was observed during the last decade. The paper attempts to undertake a detailed analysis of the service sector growth and how services export play a crucial role in it. The study aims to investigate the possible cointegration and direction of causality between services export and service sector growth in India for the period 2004-05 to 2012-13. The results reveal that both software and non-software miscellaneous services (business, financial and communication) have led to the services sector growth. Bidirectional causality is observed between software services export and growth of the services sector and between non software services export and growth of the services sector while unidirectional causality is observed from software services export to nonsoftware services export

Performances of silicone coated high resistive bakelite RPC

Performances of several single gap (gas gap 2 mm) prototype Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) made of high resistive ({\rho} \sim 1010 - 1012 {\Omega} cm) bakelite, commercially available in India have been studied in recent times. To make the inner electrode surfaces smooth, a thin coating of silicone has been applied. An efficiency > 90% and time resolution \sim 2 ns (FWHM) have been obtained for both the streamer and the avalanche mode. The induced charge distributions of those silicone coated RPC are studied and the results are presented. A numerical study on the effect of surface roughness of the resistive electrodes on the electric field of the device has been carried out using Garfield-neBEM code. A few results for a simplified model representing surface roughness, measured using a surface profilometer for the bakelite surfaces, have also been presented

Transforming activity of mercury-substituted DNA synthesized in vitro by permeable cells of bacillus subtilis

Mercurated DNA was synthesized in permeable cells of bacillus subtilis, using 5-mercurideoxycytidine triphosphate as one of the substrates, and was separated from parental unsubstituted DNA by isopycnic centrifugation in CsCl gradients. The ability of mercurated DNA to transform auxotrophic strains of β. subtilis to prototrophy was compared with that of normal DNA and was 10-20% of the latter. Mercurated and normal DNA bound with similar affinities to identical surface receptors of the recipient cells, but the efficiency of the bound mercurated DNA in promoting transformation was one-tenth to one-fifth of that of normal DNA. The transforming activity of mercury-substituted dna synthesized in an in vitro system opens the way for the use of mercury as a probe to study the mechanism of bacterial transformation and various other kinds of genetic exchange
