    The Child Health Scenario in India: An Application of Bayesian Approach

    Background: The child mortality rate of a place is an indication of the basic health facility prevalent there. A place with better medical facility records low child mortality. The child mortality rate reduction is not as expected in many developing countries. In last two decades the child death rate has not been reduced significantly in India. The aim of this work is to explore the child death rate in different Indian states. Materials and Methods: The Bayesian approach has been applied to control the over dispersion due to presence of zero (i.e. no-death count) in the data set. The Zero Inflated Poisson (ZIP) has been applied to control the presence of over the Zero Inflation Distribution. The data set has been considered from Indian National Health and Family Survey (NFHS-3) conducted during 2005-2006. The women having at least one living child of age less than five years has been selected as study subjects

    Spectator tension in limited overs cricket matches

    Depending on their construction, cricket performance measures can be used to measure various aspects of a match. In this study the focus is on the emotions experienced by the supporters of the two teams in limited overs matches. During a cricket match the supporters of the teams often experience high levels of tension depending on how their team performs and on the match situation. In this study measures are proposed to assess the supposed level of tension of the supporters of the team batting in the second innings of the match, and also of the supporters of the bowling team. Criteria are defined to assess the effect of boundaries scored or wickets falling on the tension or frustration experienced by the supporters of the two teams. These effects increase in size as the match progresses, except in the case of the bowling team where the effect of wickets falling remains almost the same. The measures are particularly interesting in the case of closely contested matches where the outcome remains in the balance up to the end.Keywords: Cricket; Sports analytics; Team sports; Match supporters

    Impact of Power Play Overs on the Outcome of Twenty20 Cricket Match

    This study attempts to find if better performance in power play leads a team to victory in a Twenty20 match. Based on the methodology devised to do so, the study tries to measure the performance of both the teams during power play overs in terms of batting and bowling. The developed measure is called &lsquo;Prod&rsquo; which is a product of the difference of batting and bowling performance of the teams during power play overs. The team with better performance in both the skills during power play is expected to win the match. But it would be difficult to predict the outcome of a match if the performance of a team is better in bowling and worse in batting and vice-versa. A total of 261 matches from different seasons of Indian Premier League (IPL) are considered for the study. The outcomes of 220 matches are predicted based on the performance of two teams in power play out of which 153 of them were correctly predicted. Remaining 41 matches could not be predicted as it is not clear which team performed better during power play. Thus, out of the matches where the dominance of a team was clear in the power play, 70 percent cases that team ultimately won the match in Twenty20 cricket

    Measuring performance of batting partners in limited overs cricket

    Batting and bowling are prime skills in the game of cricket. Unlike bowling, batting takes place between a pair of two batsmen, often referred to as a partnership. If a batsman is dismissed, the pair is broken and a new partnership is formed with the next batsman. However, the different existing measures of batting performance are based on individual performances and not on the basis of partnerships. This research attempts to develop a measure to quantify the batting performance of partnerships. This unique measure takes into account not only the runs scored by the partnership, but also the match situation in which the runs are scored by the batting partners. To quantify the model, the 2016 Twenty20 World Cup played in India is considered. If the partnership scores are computed for a series of matches of a given team, then the coach can identify the partnerships that bat well under pressure. It will be helpful in determining the batting order of the team so that reasonably well played partnerships under pressure shall occur more frequently in the upcoming matches. This measure can also determine the best opening batting partners for a given team in limited overs cricket.Keywords: Batting; Cricket analytics; Limited overs; Performance measurement

    Transcriptional analysis of bla NDM-1 and copy number alteration under carbapenem stress

    Abstract Background New Delhi metallo beta-lactamase is known to compromise carbapenem therapy and leading to treatment failure. However, their response to carbapenem stress is not clearly known. Here, we have investigated the transcriptional response of bla NDM-1 and plasmid copy number alteration under carbapenem exposure. Methods Three bla NDM-1 harboring plasmids representing three incompatibility types (IncFIC, IncA/C and IncK) were inoculated in LB broth with and without imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem. After each 1 h total RNA was isolated, immediately reverse transcribed into cDNA and quantitative real time PCR was used for transcriptional expression of bla NDM-1. Horizontal transferability and stability of the plasmids encoding bla NDM-1 were also determined. Changes in copy number of bla NDM-1 harboring plasmids under the exposure of different carbapenems were determined by real time PCR. Clonal relatedness among the isolates was determined by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Results Under carbapenem stress over an interval of time there was a sharp variation in the transcriptional expression of bla NDM-1 although it did not follow a specific pattern. All bla NDM-1 carrying plasmids were transferable by conjugation. These plasmids were highly stable and complete loss was observed between 92nd to 96th serial passages when antibiotic pressure was withdrawn. High copy number of bla NDM-1 was found for IncF type plasmids compared to the other replicon types. Conclusion This study suggests that the single dose of carbapenem pressure does not significantly influence the expression of bla NDM-1 and also focus on the stability of this gene as well as the change in copy number with respect to the incompatible type of plasmid harboring resistance determinant
