    The Advantage of Foraging Myopically

We study the dynamics of a \emph{myopic} forager that randomly wanders on a lattice in which each site contains one unit of food. Upon encountering a food-containing site, the forager eats all the food at this site with probability p<1p<1; otherwise, the food is left undisturbed. When the forager eats, it can wander S\mathcal{S} additional steps without food before starving to death. When the forager does not eat, either by not detecting food on a full site or by encountering an empty site, the forager goes hungry and comes one time unit closer to starvation. As the forager wanders, a multiply connected spatial region where food has been consumed---a desert---is created. The forager lifetime depends non-monotonically on its degree of myopia pp, and at the optimal myopia p=p(S)p=p^*(\mathcal{S}), the forager lives much longer than a normal forager that always eats when it encounters food. This optimal lifetime grows as S2/lnS\mathcal{S}^2/\ln\mathcal{S} in one dimension and faster than a power law in S\mathcal{S} in two and higher dimensions.Comment: 10 pages, 1o figure

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries can have negative consequences on the careers of National Football League (NFL) players, however no study has ever analyzed the financial impact of these injuries in this population. PURPOSE: To quantify the impact of ACL injuries on salary and career length in NFL athletes. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Any player in the NFL suffering an ACL injury from 2010 to 2013 was identified using a comprehensive online search. A database of NFL player salaries was used to conduct a matched cohort analysis comparing ACL-injured players with the rest of the NFL. The main outcomes were the percentage of players remaining in the NFL and mean salary at 1, 2, 3, and 4 years after injury. Cohorts were subdivided based on initial salary: group A,2,000,000.Meancumulativeearningswerecalculatedbymultiplyingthepercentageofplayersremainingintheleaguebytheirmeansalariesandcompoundingthiseachseason.RESULTS:NFLathletessuffered219ACLinjuriesfrom2010to2013.The7504otherplayerseasonsintheNFLduringthistimewereusedascontrols.SignificantlyfewerACLinjuredplayersthancontrolsremainedintheNFLateachtimepoint(P3˘c.05).IngroupA,significantlylessACLinjuredplayersremainedintheNFLat1to3seasonsafterinjury(P3˘c.05),andingroupB,significantlylessACLinjuredplayersremainedintheNFLat1and2seasonsafterinjury(P3˘c.05).TherewasnosignificantdecreaseingroupC.PlayersingroupsAandBremainingintheNFLalsohadalowermeansalarythancontrols(P3˘c.05inseason1).Themeancumulativeearningsover4yearsforACLinjuredplayerswas2,000,000. Mean cumulative earnings were calculated by multiplying the percentage of players remaining in the league by their mean salaries and compounding this each season. RESULTS: NFL athletes suffered 219 ACL injuries from 2010 to 2013. The 7504 other player seasons in the NFL during this time were used as controls. Significantly fewer ACL-injured players than controls remained in the NFL at each time point (P \u3c .05). In group A, significantly less ACL-injured players remained in the NFL at 1 to 3 seasons after injury (P \u3c .05), and in group B, significantly less ACL-injured players remained in the NFL at 1 and 2 seasons after injury (P \u3c .05). There was no significant decrease in group C. Players in groups A and B remaining in the NFL also had a lower mean salary than controls (P \u3c .05 in season 1). The mean cumulative earnings over 4 years for ACL-injured players was 2,070,521 less per player than uninjured controls. CONCLUSION: On average, ACL-injured players earned 2,070,521lessthansalarymatchedcontrolsoverthe4yearsafterinjury.Playersinitiallyearninglessthan2,070,521 less than salary-matched controls over the 4 years after injury. Players initially earning less than 2 million per year have lower mean salaries and are less likely to remain in the league than uninjured controls. The careers of players initially earning over $2 million per year, meanwhile, are not negatively affected. This demonstrates the degree of negative impact these injuries have on the careers of NFL players. It also indicates that a player\u27s standing within the league before injury strongly influences how much an ACL injury will affect his career

Non-resonant microwave absorption studies of superconducting MgB_2

Non-resonant microwave absorption(NRMA) studies of superconducting MgB_2 at a frequency of 9.43 GHz in the field range -50 Gauss to 5000 Gauss are reported. The NRMA results indicate near absence of intergranular weak links. A linear temperature dependence of the lower critical field H_c1 is observed indicating a non s-wave superconductivity. However, the phase reversal of the NRMA signal which could suggest d-wave symmetry is also not observed.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

On the measurement of the surface energy budget over a land surface during the summer monsoon

    Get PDF
The measurement of surface energy balance over a land surface in an open area in Bangalore is reported. Measurements of all variables needed to calculate the surface energy balance on time scales longer than a week are made. Components of radiative fluxes are measured while sensible and latent heat fluxes are based on the bulk method using measurements made at two levels on a micrometeorological tower of 10m height. The bulk flux formulation is verified by comparing its fluxes with direct fluxes using sonic anemometer data sampled at 10Hz. Soil temperature is measured at 4 depths. Data have been continuously collected for over 6 months covering pre-monsoon and monsoon periods during the year 2006. The study first addresses the issue of getting the fluxes accurately. It is shown that water vapour measurements are the most crucial. A bias of 0.25% in relative humidity, which is well above the normal accuracy assumed by the manufacturers but achievable in the field using a combination of laboratory calibration and field intercomparisons, results in about 20W m-2 change in the latent heat flux on the seasonal time scale. When seen on the seasonal time scale, the net longwave radiation is the largest energy loss term at the experimental site. The seasonal variation in the energy sink term is small compared to that in the energy source term

Drift gill net fishery along Mangalore-Malpe coast

Drift gill net is the major gear used in Mangalore- Malpe area to catch large pelagic fishes. Though the catch by drift-gill net forms only 1% of the toala marine fish catch, the value of the quality fishes it lands exceeds the value of other gears. this gear plays a pivotal roal in the economy of indigenious fisheries sector. the article deals with operation details of drift gill net, catch composition of major fishes and economic status of fishes due to this drift gill net

Empirical Analysis of Production and Productivity of Indian Spices

The aim of this paper is to compare the growth rate in the production as well as productivity of the King and Queen of spices i.e., Black Pepper and Cardamom in two states, Kerala and Karnataka which are the leading producers of spices in India, the paper makes use of secondary data. the article highlights that the spice growers are switching their crops from pepper to cardamom and other plants. This can be caused by the reduction in productivity of pepper, and also in general, pepper cannot be grown as cardamom or paddy again on the same piece of land. Besides, the pepper price fluctuation is smaller than cardamom and other crops. However, the decrease in pepper productivity is above the degree of pepper price stability and this study highlights the plantation sector, more specifically, spices which contribute largely to the Indian economy, and which is often an underutilized sector despite its vast potential
