An Economic Performance Analysis of the Beef Cow-herd Enterprise Using a Stochastic Frontier Function
Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) data from Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were used to examine the economic performance of beef cow herd operations in the Southern Plains region by measuring their technical efficiency index. Factors that make significant impacts on the production are herd size, machinery investment per breeding cow, and rainfall. Validity assessment of the Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Health Belief scale.
BACKGROUND: : Women at increased risk of breast cancer (BC) are not widely accepting of chemopreventive interventions, and ethnic minorities are underrepresented in related trials. Furthermore, there is no validated instrument to assess the health-seeking behavior of these women with respect to these interventions.
METHODS: : By using constructs from the Health Belief Model, the authors developed and refined, based on pilot data, the Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Health Belief (BCRRHB) scale using a population of 265 women at increased risk of BC who were largely medically underserved, of low socioeconomic status (SES), and ethnic minorities. Construct validity was assessed using principal components analysis with oblique rotation to extract factors, and generate and interpret summary scales. Internal consistency was determined using Cronbach alpha coefficients.
RESULTS: : Test-retest reliability for the pilot and final data was calculated to be r = 0.85. Principal components analysis yielded 16 components that explained 64% of the total variance, with communalities ranging from 0.50-0.75. Cronbach alpha coefficients for the extracted factors ranged from 0.45-0.77.
CONCLUSIONS: : Evidence suggests that the BCRRHB yields reliable and valid data that allows for the identification of barriers and enhancing factors associated with use of breast cancer chemoprevention in the study population. These findings allow for tailoring treatment plans and intervention strategies to the individual. Future research is needed to validate the scale for use in other female populations. Cancer 2009. A Second Look at String-Inspired Models for Proton-Proton Scattering via Pomeron Exchange
We re-examine a string dual model for elastic proton-proton scattering via
Pomeron exchange. We argue that the method of "Reggeizing" a propagator to take
into account an entire trajectory of exchanged particles can be generalized, in
particular by modifying the value of the mass-shell parameter in the model. We
then fit the generalized model to scattering data at large s and small t. The
fitting results are inconclusive, but suggest that a better fit might be
obtained by allowing the mass-shell to vary. The model fits the data equally
well (roughly) for a wide range of values of the mass-shell parameter, but the
other fitting parameters (the slope and intercept of the Regge trajectory, and
the coupling constant and dipole mass from the proton-proton-glueball coupling)
are then inconsistent with what we expect. On the other hand, using the
traditional method of Reggeization generates a weaker fit, but the other
parameters obtain more physically reasonable values. In analyzing the fitting
results, we also found that our model is more consistent with the sqrt(s) =
1800 GeV coming from the E710 experiment than that coming from the CDF
experiment, and that our model has the greatest discrepancy with the data in
the range 0.5 GeV^2 < |t| < 0.6 GeV^2, suggesting that the transition from soft
Pomeron to hard Pomeron may occur closer to t = -0.5 GeV^2 rather than t = -0.6

Dynamics of non-equilibrium membrane bud formation
The dynamical response of a lipid membrane to a local perturbation of its
molecular symmetry is investigated theoretically. A density asymmetry between
the two membrane leaflets is predominantly released by in-plane lipid diffusion
or membrane curvature, depending upon the spatial extent of the perturbation.
It may result in the formation of non-equilibrium structures (buds), for which
a dynamical size selection is observed. A preferred size in the micrometer
range is predicted, as a signature of the crossover between membrane and
solvent dominated dynamical membrane response.Comment: 7 pages 3 figure
Chemoprevention for Breast Cancer
BACKGROUND: Many women at increased risk for breast cancer could benefit from preventive therapy. Preventive therapy options for breast cancer risk reduction have expanded in the last few years to include both selective receptor modulators (tamoxifen and raloxifene) and aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole and exemestane). METHODS: Risk factors that place women at high risk for breast cancer, as well as risk calculation models appropriate for the selection of candidates for preventive therapy, are presented, followed by a review of current guidelines for chemoprevention and results of chemoprevention trials. RESULTS: The modified Gail model or Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool is the most widely utilized risk assessment calculator to determine eligibility for chemoprevention. Women most likely to benefit from preventive therapy include those at high risk under the age of 50 years and those with atypical hyperplasia. Physician and patient barriers limit widespread acceptance and adherence to preventive therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Published guidelines on chemoprevention for breast cancer have been updated to increase awareness and encourage discussion between patients and their physicians regarding evidence-based studies evaluating the benefits of preventive options for women at increased risk for breast cancer. However, even with increasing awareness and established benefits of preventive therapy, the uptake of chemoprevention has been low, with both physician and patient barriers identified. It is prudent that these barriers be overcome to enable high-risk women with a favorable risk-to-benefit ratio to be offered chemoprevention to reduce their likelihood of developing hormone receptor-positive breast cancer
Recurrent schizophrenia-like psychosis as first manifestation of epilepsy: a diagnostic challenge in neuropsychiatry
Abstract: Since the 1950s, several studies have been carried out to investigate the occurrence of schizophrenia-like psychoses in epilepsy. The psychopathological profile comprises symptoms
from the affective, schizophrenic, and cognitive domains and the prevalence varies between 2% to 20%. Classification of such conditions is performed according to their temporal relationship
with the seizure itself. Although it is well known that epilepsy may be associated with psychotic disorders, it is less widely recognized that relapsing psychotic phenomena may be the first and only symptom of epilepsy. In this research, two patients are described who were initially referred for recurrent episodes of bipolar affective disorder and schizophrenic psychosis, respectively. In
both patients, a diagnosis of relapsing postictal psychotic states due to previously undiagnosed epilepsy was made and consequently, treatment with antiepileptics was started. During follow up over several months, they remained free of both epileptic and psychotic symptoms. Given the kaleidoscopic nature of the postictal psychosis and full recovery from this, such psychoses best meet the criteria for a cycloid psychosis. These observations illustrate diagnostic and therapeutic pitfalls due to the conceptual disintegration emerging from the inadequate separation between psychiatry and neurology. Therefore, the importance of a neuropsychiatric viewpoint should be promoted
Molecular Electroporation and the Transduction of Oligoarginines
Certain short polycations, such as TAT and polyarginine, rapidly pass through
the plasma membranes of mammalian cells by an unknown mechanism called
transduction as well as by endocytosis and macropinocytosis. These
cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) promise to be medically useful when fused to
biologically active peptides. I offer a simple model in which one or more CPPs
and the phosphatidylserines of the inner leaflet form a kind of capacitor with
a voltage in excess of 180 mV, high enough to create a molecular electropore.
The model is consistent with an empirical upper limit on the cargo peptide of
40--60 amino acids and with experimental data on how the transduction of a
polyarginine-fluorophore into mouse C2C12 myoblasts depends on the number of
arginines in the CPP and on the CPP concentration. The model makes three

Simple Model of the Transduction of Cell-Penetrating Peptides
Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) such as HIV's trans-activating
transcriptional activator (TAT) and polyarginine rapidly pass through the
plasma membranes of mammalian cells by an unknown mechanism called
transduction. They may be medically useful when fused to well-chosen chains of
fewer than about 35 amino acids. I offer a simple model of transduction in
which phosphatidylserines and CPPs effectively form two plates of a capacitor
with a voltage sufficient to cause the formation of transient pores
(electroporation). The model is consistent with experimental data on the
transduction of oligoarginine into mouse C2-C12 myoblasts and makes three
