The detection of ultrasound using fiber-optic sensors
Ultrasound is a valuable tool for the detection of damage in structures and the characterization of material properties. Its detection is conventionally done by piezoelectric transducers, however fiber-optic sensors can operate over a greater range of frequencies and also yield information on the direction of wave propagation. The interaction between fiber sensors and ultrasound both demonstrates the integrating features of intrinsic fiber-optic sensors and presents new opportunities in ultrasonic detection, offering enormous diversity in polar and frequency response. This paper summarizes the interaction mechanisms between ultrasound and fiber sensors and confirms their functional flexibility. We use these results to demonstrate the practical use of these sensors to detect and locate damage in a sample

Gender Justice as an International Objective: India in the G20
The G20 states have made a commitment to drastically lower the gender differential in their labour markets. All G20 states, including India, will have great difficulty doing so, as the disparity is a consequence not of formal deficiencies, but of informal norms and value attitudes. It will take both time and holistic approaches on the domestic and international levels to change this.
Gender justice will feature more prominently at this year's G20 summit under the German presidency. At past summits, the issue was rather neglected. The 2014 Brisbane Declaration represented a watershed moment, as the G20 states committed to reduce the gender gap in the labour market participation rate by 25 per cent by the year 2025.
Women's employment rates in some countries are, however, stagnating â in India they have even dropped. Neither economic growth nor statutory requirements or strides in women's education have improved the situation. Given all this, the question arises of how the stated objective can be reached.
The Modi government has developed a new strategy to increase women's participation in the labour market that includes attracting textile and other manufacturing industries and promoting self-employment and professional qualifications.
It remains to be seen whether the measures will succeed; whether low-paying jobs in the textile industry will truly lead to good jobs; and whether this will increase women's levels of societal, political, and economic participation. A change in discriminatory value attitudes is particularly crucial.
The G20 states are in at least verbal agreement that gender justice is fundamental to sustainable and socially just economic growth. The increase in women's labour market participation should be seen as just one step in the right direction. To help create vital jobs in India, Germany should advocate for holistic political measures in the context of its G20 presidency, and the EU and the G20 should support India in its attempts to open markets and attract direct investment
Time matters: How default resolution times impact final loss rates
Using access to a unique bank loss database, we find positive dependencies of default resolution times (DRTs) of defaulted bank loan contracts and final loan loss rates (losses given default, LGDs). Due to this interconnection, LGD predictions made at the time of default and during resolution are subject to censoring. Pure (standard) LGD models are not able to capture effects of censoring. Accordingly, their LGD predictions may be biased and underestimate loss rates of defaulted loans. In this paper, we develop a Bayesian hierarchical modelling framework for DRTs and LGDs. In comparison to previous approaches, we derive final DRT estimates for loans in default which enables consistent LGD predictions conditional on the time in default. Furthermore, adequate unconditional LGD predictions can be derived. The proposed method is applicable to duration processes in general where the final outcomes depend on the duration of the process and are affected by censoring. By this means, we avoid bias of parameter estimates to ensure adequate predictions
Bayesian inference with Subset Simulation: Strategies and improvements
Bayesian Updating with Structural reliability methods (BUS) reinterprets the Bayesian updating problem as a structural reliability problem; i.e. a rare event estimation. The BUS approach can be considered an extension of rejection sampling, where a standard uniform random variable is added to the space of random variables. Each generated sample from this extended random variable space is accepted if the realization of the uniform random variable is smaller than the likelihood function scaled by a constant c. The constant c has to be selected such that 1âc is not smaller than the maximum of the likelihood function, which, however, is typically unknown a-priori. A c chosen too small will have negative impact on the efficiency of the BUS approach when combined with sampling-based reliability methods. For the combination of BUS with Subset Simulation, we propose an approach, termed aBUS, for adaptive BUS, that does not require c as input. The proposed algorithm requires only minimal modifications of standard BUS with Subset Simulation. We discuss why aBUS produces samples that follow the posterior distribution âeven if 1âc is selected smaller than the maximum of the likelihood function. The performance of aBUS in terms of the computed evidence required for Bayesian model class selection and in terms of the produced posterior samples is assessed numerically for different example problems. The combination of BUS with Subset Simulation (and aBUS in particular) is well suited for problems with many uncertain parameters and for Bayesian updating of models where it is computationally demanding to evaluate the likelihood function
Surface Engineering for Phase Change Heat Transfer: A Review
Among numerous challenges to meet the rising global energy demand in a
sustainable manner, improving phase change heat transfer has been at the
forefront of engineering research for decades. The high heat transfer rates
associated with phase change heat transfer are essential to energy and industry
applications; but phase change is also inherently associated with poor
thermodynamic efficiencies at low heat flux, and violent instabilities at high
heat flux. Engineers have tried since the 1930's to fabricate solid surfaces
that improve phase change heat transfer. The development of micro and
nanotechnologies has made feasible the high-resolution control of surface
texture and chemistry over length scales ranging from molecular levels to
centimeters. This paper reviews the fabrication techniques available for
metallic and silicon-based surfaces, considering sintered and polymeric
coatings. The influence of such surfaces in multiphase processes of high
practical interest, e.g., boiling, condensation, freezing, and the associated
physical phenomena are reviewed. The case is made that while engineers are in
principle able to manufacture surfaces with optimum nucleation or thermofluid
transport characteristics, more theoretical and experimental efforts are needed
to guide the design and cost-effective fabrication of surfaces that not only
satisfy the existing technological needs, but also catalyze new discoveries

Crystallization of a designed peptide from a molten globule ensemble
Backgound:The design of amino acid sequences that adopt a desired three-dimensional fold has been of keen interest over the past decade. However, the design of proteins that adopt unique conformations is still a considerable problem. Until very recently, all of the designed proteins that have been extensively characterized possess the hallmarks of the molten globular state. Molten globular intermediates have been observed in both equilibrium and kinetic protein folding/stability studies, and understanding the forces that determine compact non-native states is critical for a comprehensive understanding of proteins. This paper describes the solution and early solid state characterization of peptides that form molten globular ensembles. Results & Conclusions:Crystals diffracting to 3.5Ä resolution have been grown of a 16-residue peptide (α1A) designed to form a tetramer of α-helices. In addition, a closely related peptide, α1, has previously been shown to yield crystals that diffract to 1.2Ä resolution. The solution properties of these two peptides were examined to determine whether their well defined crystalline conformations were retained in solution. On the basis of an examination of their NMR spectra, sedimentation equilibria, thermal unfolding, and ANS binding, it is concluded that the peptides form α-helical aggregates with properties similar to those of the molten globule state. Thus, for these peptides, the process of crystallization bears many similarities to models of protein folding. Upon dissolution, the peptides rapidly assume compact molten globular states similar to the molten globule like intermediates that are formed at short times after refolding is initiated. Following a rate-determining nucleation step, the peptides crystallize into a single or a small number of conformations in a process that mimics the formation of native structure in proteins
