Persistent superfluid phase in a three-dimensional quantum XY model with ring exchange
We present quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on a quantum S=1/2 XY model
with ring exchange (the J-K model) on a three-dimensional simple cubic lattice.
We first characterize the ground state properties of the pure XY model,
obtaining estimations for the energy, spin stiffness and spin susceptibility at
T=0 in the superfluid phase. With the ring exchange, we then present simulation
data on small lattices which suggests that the superfluid phase persists to
very large values of the ring exchange K, without signatures of a phase
transition. We comment on the consequences of this result for the search for
various exotic phases in three dimensions.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
High magnetic field thermal-expansion and elastic properties of CeRhIn
We report high magnetic field thermal-expansion and magnetostriction results
on CeRhIn single crystals. Several transitions, both first and second
order, are observed when the field is applied perpendicular to the
crystallographic c-axis. The magnetic field dependence of the thermal-expansion
coefficient above 15 K, where the magnetic correlations are negligible, can be
explained supposing an almost pure ground state doublet, in
apparent contradiction with neutron scattering experiments. Although the
spin-lattice interaction is relevant in this compound, the effect of the
magnetic correlations on the elastic properties is relatively weak, as revealed
by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Shear thickening in densely packed suspensions of spheres and rods confined to few layers
We investigate confined shear thickening suspensions for which the sample
thickness is comparable to the particle dimensions. Rheometry measurements are
presented for densely packed suspensions of spheres and rods with aspect ratios
6 and 9. By varying the suspension thickness in the direction of the shear
gradient at constant shear rate, we find pronounced oscillations in the stress.
These oscillations become stronger as the gap size is decreased, and the stress
is minimized when the sample thickness becomes commensurate with an integer
number of particle layers. Despite this confinement-induced effect, viscosity
curves show shear thickening that retains bulk behavior down to samples as thin
as two particle diameters for spheres, below which the suspension is jammed.
Rods exhibit similar behavior commensurate with the particle width, but they
show additional effects when the thickness is reduced below about a particle
length as they are forced to align; the stress increases for decreasing gap
size at fixed shear rate while the shear thickening regime gradually
transitions to a Newtonian scaling regime. This weakening of shear thickening
as an ordered configuration is approached contrasts with the strengthening of
shear thickening when the packing fraction is increased in the disordered bulk
limit, despite the fact that both types of confinement eventually lead to

Vanishing spin alignment : experimental indication of triaxial nuclear molecule
Fragment-fragment- coincidences have been measured for at an energy corresponding to the population of a conjectured
resonance in Ni. Fragment angular distributions as well as -ray
angular correlations indicate that the spin orientations of the outgoing
fragments are perpendicular to the orbital angular momentum. This differs from
the and the resonances, and
suggests two oblate nuclei interacting in an equator-to-equator

Molecular features of a human rhabdomyosarcoma cell line with spontaneous metastatic progression
A novel human cell line was established from a primary botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction investigations of this cell line, called RUCH-2, demonstrated expression of the regulatory factors PAX3, Myf3 and Myf5. After 3.5 months in culture, cells underwent a crisis after which Myf3 and Myf5 could no longer be detected, whereas PAX3 expression remained constant over the entire period. Karyotype analysis revealed breakpoints in regions similar to previously described alterations in primary rhabdomyosarcoma tumour samples. Interestingly, cells progressed to a metastatic phenotype, as observed by enhanced invasiveness in vitro and tumour growth in nude mice in vivo. On the molecular level, microarray analysis before and after progression identified extensive changes in the composition of the extracellular matrix. As expected, down-regulation of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases and up-regulation of matrix metalloproteinases were observed. Extensive down-regulation of several death receptors of the tumour necrosis factor family suggests that these cells might have an altered response to appropriate apoptotic stimuli. The RUCH-2 cell line represents a cellular model to study multistep tumorigenesis in human rhabdomyosarcoma, allowing molecular comparison of tumorigenic versus metastatic cancer cells. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Transnationalism and Social Work Education
Transnational movements, networks, and relationships are everywhere in this âworld on the moveâ (Williams & Graham, 2014, p. i1). Transnational peoples maintain relationships of interdependence and support with families and communities in their places of origin, often returning regularly, while starting new lives and making new connections. Transnationalism is characterized by mobilities and networks, by social integration, and by extended and extensive relationship ties of family, neighborhood, religious faith, or combinations thereof (Valtonen, 2008). While disciplines across the world including sociology, human geography, and cultural anthropology engage with the implications of transnationalism (Bauböck & Faist, 2010), social work in England and mainland Europe has not achieved similar levels of engagement. As Cox and Geisen state: âthe social world is being transformed by migration and social work is playing catch-upâ (2014, p. i162)
Identification of winter weather types of the eastern North Pacific by means of a partial zonal index
