We provide information of 11 new records of spiders of the Cape Region, Baja California peninsula. Two are new records for Mexico (Tennesseellum gollum and Araneus illaudatus); two genera (Edricus and Pozonia) and seven species are new records for Baja California Sur (Eustala emertoni, Arctosa minuta, Frontinella pyramitela, Chrysso albomaculata, Ariamnes mexicanus, Neospintharus baboquivari and Xysticus californicus). Philoponella arizonica is a reconfirmed species for this region. The peninsular discontinuous distributions and the peninsular-mainland discontinuous distributions of these species are discussed.Se dan a conocer 11 nuevos registros de arañas para la Región del Cabo, península de Baja California. Barriers and Enablers to Health-Seeking for People Affected by Severe Stigmatising Skin Diseases (SSSDs): A Scoping Review

People affected by severe stigmatising skin diseases (SSSDs) often live in the poorest communities, within the poorest countries, and experience a range of barriers to seeking timely, quality care. This scoping review analyses the available literature on health-seeking for patients affected by SSSDs, to identify enablers and barriers to health-seeking. We searched MEDLINE complete, CINAHL, Global Health databases for suitable articles published between 2010 and 2020. Search strings were compiled for health-seeking, SSSDs and lower middle-income countries (LMIC). Our search returned 1004 studies from across three databases. Of these, 136 potentially relevant studies were identified and full texts were reviewed for eligibility against the inclusion criteria, leading to the inclusion of 55 studies. Thematic narrative analysis was used, with results framed around the Levesque framework to analyse barriers and enablers to health-seeking along the continuum of the patient pathway. This scoping review has revealed barriers across the patient pathway, from both supply and demand aspects of health services. Spiritual beliefs emerged strongly relating to care-seeking and underlying stigma. Curative care was a focus for the majority of studies, but few papers emphasised holistic care (such as physical rehabilitation and psychosocial support). From our analysis, greater community engagement is needed to reduce barriers along the patient-care pathway

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer stage at diagnosis according to race

PURPOSE: To determine if the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated racial disparities in late-stage presentation of breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers. METHODS: We conducted a registry-based retrospective study of patients with newly reported diagnoses of breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers between March 2019-June 2019 (pre-COVID-19) and March 2020-June 2020 (early-COVID-19). We compared the volume of new diagnoses and stage at presentation according to race between both periods. RESULTS: During the study period, a total of 3528 patients had newly diagnosed cancer; 3304 of which had known disease stages and were included in the formal analyses. 467 (14.1%) were Blacks, and 2743 were (83%) Whites. 1216 (36.8%) had breast, 415 (12.6%) had colorectal, 827 (25%) had lung, and 846 (25.6%) had prostate cancers, respectively. The pre-COVID-19 period included 2120 (64.2%), and the early-COVID-19 period included 1184 (35.8%), representing a proportional 44.2% decline in the volume of new cases of breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers, p \u3c 0.0001. Pre-COVID-19, 16.8% were diagnosed with metastatic disease, versus 20.4% early-COVID-19, representing a proportional increase of 21.4% in the numbers of new cases with metastatic disease, p = 0.01. There was a non-significant proportional decline of 1.9% in Black patients diagnosed with non-metastatic breast, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers early-COVID-19 (p = 0.71) and a non-significant proportional increase of 7% in Black patients diagnosed with metastatic disease (p = 0.71). Difference-in-difference analyses showed no statistically significant differences in metastatic presentation comparing Black to White patients. CONCLUSION: While we identified substantial reductions in the volume of new cancer diagnoses and increases in metastatic presentations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact was similar for White and Black patients

Disposable diaper waste accumulation at the human-livestock-wildlife interface

    Get PDF
Improper management of disposable diaper waste is becoming a priority global health issue because it has resulted in environmental accumulation of fecal pathogens and non-biodegradable material. Concerns include drinking water safety, as well as chemical and physical contaminants that may harm human, animal (domestic and wildlife), and environmental health. In rural areas, especially those in low- and middle-income countries where municipal waste management infrastructure may be lacking, this issue is particularly challenging. Using a One Health approach, this study used spatial statistics to describe the location and proximity of disposable diaper waste sites to livestock grazing areas, human dwellings, rivers, and conservation areas in agro-pastoralist com- munities in South Africa. A total of 627 unique diaper waste sites were identified and plotted between May 2019 and March 2020. The mean distance of waste sites to rivers was 2,196 m (SD = 1,799) and 5,523 m (SD = 2,642) to protected areas. Most diaper waste sites were located along the perimeter of villages and dwellings, where livestock grazing areas are common. This description of waste sites is an important step in strategizing efficient and effective waste management programs and policies that prioritize those areas with greatest potential impact on human, animal, and environmental health for remediation.South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s Environmental Monitors Program.http://www.elsevier.com/locate/envcam2023Veterinary Tropical Disease
