Social mindfulness and prosociality vary across the globe
Humans are social animals, but not everyone will be mindful of others to the same extent. Individual differences have been found, but would social mindfulness also be shaped by one’s location in the world? Expecting cross-national differences to exist, we examined if and how social mindfulness differs across countries. At little to no material cost, social mindfulness typically entails small acts of attention or kindness. Even though fairly common, such low-cost cooperation has received little empirical attention. Measuring social mindfulness across 31 samples from industrialized countries and regions (n = 8,354), we found considerable variation. Among selected country-level variables, greater social mindfulness was most strongly associated with countries’ better general performance on environmental protection. Together, our findings contribute to the literature on prosociality by targeting the kind of everyday cooperation that is more focused on communicating benevolence than on providing material benefits
Review of Coronal Oscillations - An Observer's View
Recent observations show a variety of oscillation modes in the corona. Early
non-imaging observations in radio wavelengths showed a number of fast-period
oscillations in the order of seconds, which have been interpreted as fast
sausage mode oscillations. TRACE observations from 1998 have for the first time
revealed the lateral displacements of fast kink mode oscillations, with periods
of ~3-5 minutes, apparently triggered by nearby flares and destabilizing
filaments. Recently, SUMER discovered with Doppler shift measurements loop
oscillations with longer periods (10-30 minutes) and relatively short damping
times in hot (7 MK) loops, which seem to correspond to longitudinal slow
magnetoacoustic waves. In addition, propagating longitudinal waves have also
been detected with EIT and TRACE in the lowest density scale height of loops
near sunspots. All these new observations seem to confirm the theoretically
predicted oscillation modes and can now be used as a powerful tool for
``coronal seismology'' diagnostic.Comment: 5 Figure
Reply to Komatsu et al.: from local social mindfulness to global sustainability efforts?
Komatsu et al. (1) argue that Van Doesum et al. (2) may have overlooked the role of GDP in reporting a positive association between social mindfulness (SoMi) and the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) at country level. Although the relationship between EPI and SoMi is relatively weaker for countries with higher GDP, that does not imply that the overall observed relationship is a statistical artifact. Rather, it implies that GDP may be a moderator of the relationship between EPI and SoMi. The observed correlation is a valid result on average across countries, and the actual effect size would, at least to some degree, depend on GDP.Social decision makin
Reply to Nielsen et al.: social mindfulness is associated with countries’ environmental performance and individual environmental concern
Nielsen et al. (1) argue that Van Doesum et al. (2) need to consider three points for their interpretation of a positive association between individual-level social mindfulness (SoMi) and environmental performance (EPI) at the country level (3). The association is weaker when 1) it is controlled for GDP and 2) when the data of three countries are removed; also, 3) the data do not address the association between SoMi and individual-level environmental concern. We discuss these points in turn.Social decision makin

Performance assessment of wireless data capture in construction
The tenet of TQM is the use of measurements to monitor an operation in order to avoid poor quality outputs. The construction faces unique barriers to utilize effective technologies to capture critical process data in real time. This paper presents the results of extensive field testing of wireless systems to study the effect of the 'noisy' environment on sensing and signal propagation. The findings confirmed the hypothesis that construction activities and equipment impact the performance of such networks. In an experimental application on site, ZigBee network to collect data about temperature at pre - designed locations was integrated with an off - site station. Working with the system led to the conclusion that ZigBee is a viable technology to be implemented on the construction site, reliable and easy to use. The concrete crew receiving real time data on temperature from the embedded sensors were delighted as they have never been provided with such new and important information before
Students' perceptions of the relevance of mathematics in engineering
In this paper, we report on the findings of an exploratory study into the experience of students as they learn first year engineering mathematics. Here we define engineering as the application of mathematics and sciences to the building and design of projects for the use of society (Kirschenman and Brenner 2010)d. Qualitative and quantitative data on students' views of the relevance of their mathematics study to their engineering studies and future careers in engineering was collected. The students described using a range of mathematics techniques (mathematics skills developed, mathematics concepts applied to engineering and skills developed relevant for engineering) for various usages (as a subject of study, a tool for other subjects or a tool for real world problems). We found a number of themes relating to the design of mathematics engineering curriculum emerged from the data. These included the relevance of mathematics within different engineering majors, the relevance of mathematics to future studies, the relevance of learning mathematical rigour, and the effectiveness of problem solving tasks in conveying the relevance of mathematics more effectively than other forms of assessment. We make recommendations for the design of engineering mathematics curriculum based on our findings
