Temporary Project Network and Innovation: a Research on Italian Regional Wine Industry

    Get PDF
This study aims at exploring the characteristics of the Temporary Project Networks (TPNs) in small and medium-sized wine producing enterprises, both from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. It aims to discuss different types of temporary inter-firm collaboration clusters both in terms of structural/organizational features and in terms of innovation tasks development. It also aims to develop an empirically derived taxonomy of TPNs within the Sannio wine industry

Probiotics as prevention and treatment for diarrhea

    Get PDF
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To critically appraise evidence on probiotic use for prevention and treatment of diarrhea in children and adults. RECENT FINDINGS: Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses suggested that probiotics are effective in primary and secondary prevention of gastroenteritis and its treatment. Selected Lactobacillus strains had a modest, although significant effect in primary prevention. Saccharomyces boulardii was effective in antibiotic-associated and in Clostridium difficile diarrhea. There is evidence that it might prevent diarrhea in day-care centers. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG was associated with reduced diarrheal duration and severity, more evident in case of childhood Rotavirus diarrhea. Similar, although weaker, evidence was obtained with S. boulardii. Both strains are included in evidence-based recommendations for gastroenteritis management in children. Data on other Lactobacillus strains are preliminary. Probiotic efficacy was related to cause, early administration and bacterial load, and their mechanisms were associated with antiinfectious action in the intestine or, indirectly, to modulation of innate and adaptive immunity. SUMMARY: Probiotics have gained a role as adjunctive treatment of infantile gastroenteritis together with rehydration. Their efficacy is less convincing in adults, but promising in antibiotic-associated diarrhea. However, evidence of efficacy is limited to a few strains

A Preliminary 1D-3D Analysis of the Darmstadt Research Engine under Motored Condition

In the present paper, 1D and 3D CFD models of the Darmstadt research engine undergo a preliminary validation against the available experimental dataset at motored condition. The Darmstadt engine is a single-cylinder optical research unit and the chosen operating point is characterized by a revving speed equal to 800 rpm with intake temperature and pressure of 24 \ub0C and 0.95 bar, respectively. Experimental data are available from the TU Darmstadt engine research group. Several aspects of the engine are analyzed, such as crevice modeling, blow-by, heat transfer and compression ratio, with the aim to minimize numerical uncertainties. On the one hand, a GT-Power model of the engine is used to investigate the impact of blow-by and crevices modeling during compression and expansion strokes. Moreover, it provides boundary conditions for the following 3D CFD simulations. On the other hand, the latter, carried out in a RANS framework with both highand low-Reynolds wall treatments, allow a deeper investigation of the boundary layer phenomena and, thus, of the gas-to-wall heat transfer. A detailed modeling of the crevice, along with an ad hoc tuning of both blow-by and heat fluxes lead to a remarkable improvement of the results. However, in order to adequately match the experimental mean in-cylinder pressure, a slight modification of the compression ratio from the nominal value is accounted for, based on the uncertainty which usually characterizes such geometrical parameter. The present preliminary study aims at providing reliable numerical setups for 1D and 3D models to be adopted in future detailed investigations on the Darmstadt research engine

Experimental Investigation of the Evolution of Gaussian Quantum Discord in an Open System

Gaussian quantum discord is a measure of quantum correlations in Gaussian systems. Using Gaussian discord we quantify the quantum correlations of a bipartite entangled state and a separable two-mode mixture of coherent states. We experimentally analyze the effect of noise addition and dissipation on Gaussian discord and show that the former noise degrades the discord while the latter noise for some states leads to an increase of the discord. In particular, we experimentally demonstrate the near-death of discord by noisy evolution and its revival through dissipation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

The 19th Gums & Stabilisers for the Food Industry Conference: Hydrocolloid MultifunctionalityThis research seeks to better understand the food matrix microstructure that impacts on carotenoid bioaccessibility of two Brazilian native fruits Pitanga and Buriti while developing emulsioned oral delivery systems of its compounds. Buriti is a fruit produced by an Amazonia palm tree. Its pulp is very rich in β-carotene which is approximately 400 µg/g fresh weight1 . Pitanga originates from Atlantic forest and has high amounts of lycopene (approx. 71 µg/g in ripened fruit)1 . These hydrophobic plant pigments have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activity. However, these desired health benefits are limited by bioaccessibility aspects, mainly their physical location and structure in fresh fruits and its products2 . Emulsions have been largely studied as oral delivery systems for hydrophobic bioactives compounds such as β-carotene. Also, the concept of excipient foods is an innovation in food science and technology research2 . Buriti and Pitanga freeze dried pulps were submitted to the following experiments: 1) experimental design testing ultraturrax and ultrasound for carotene release; 2) emulsion formation by Tween 80 or Whey Protein Isolate at 1 % and 2 % surfactant concentration; 3) microstructure study of fresh pulps and emulsions. For carotene determination, it was applied a microscale extraction and HPLC-PDA analysis based on Porcu and Rodriguez-Amaya (2008)3 . Processed pulp and fruit emulsions microstructure was assessed by microscopy (brightfield, fluorescence and confocal), rheology and turbidity. Main results showed that ultrasound processing have more impact on tissue fragmentation, cell disruption and carotene release than ultraturrax (p<0.05) and is indispensable for fruit emulsion formation. Microscopy study clearly elucidate that most carotenes are entrapped inside cell walls and must be released for incorporation into lipid micelles. Ultraturrax (15000 rpm) and ultrasound (20 kHz, 40 % amplitude) treatment released up to 50 % of initial carotenoid. After emulsion formation, surfactant do not link only to the internal oil and external water, it also interacts with the carbohydrate from cell walls mainly cellulose that are in suspension – forming a gel-like structure – that was demonstrated by confocal microscopy. The obtained Buriti and Pitanga emulsions have high potential for the development new products with more bioaccessible β-carotene and lycopene.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
