Application of the coherent state formalism to multiply excited states

A general expression is obtained for the matrix element of an m-body operator between coherent states constructed from multiple orthogonal coherent boson species. This allows the coherent state formalism to be applied to states possessing an arbitrarily large number of intrinsic excitation quanta. For illustration, the formalism is applied to the two-dimensional vibron model [U(3) model], to calculate the energies of all excited states in the large-N limit.Comment: LaTeX (iopart); 10 pages; to be published in J. The Jahn-Teller active fluoroperovskites ACrF3A\mathrm{CrF_3} A=Na+,K+A=\mathrm{Na^+},\mathrm{K^+}: thermo- and magneto optical correlations as function of the AA-site

Chromium (II) fluoroperovskites ACrF3(A=Na+,K+)A\mathrm{CrF_3}(A\mathrm{=Na^+,K^+}) are strongly correlated Jahn-Teller active materials at low temperatures. In this paper, we examine the role that the AA-site ion plays in this family of fluoroperovskites using both experimental methods (XRD, optical absorption spectroscopy and magnetic fields) and DFT simulations. Temperature-dependent optical absorption experiments show that the spin-allowed transitions E2E_2 and E3E_3 only merge completely for AA= Na at 2 K. Field-dependent optical absorption measurements at 2 K show that the oscillating strength of the spin-allowed transitions in NaCrF3\mathrm{NaCrF_3} increases with increasing applied field. Direct magneto-structural correlations which suppress the spin-flip transitions are observed for KCrF3{\rm KCrF_3} below its Ne\'el temperature. In NaCrF3{\rm NaCrF_3} the spin-flip transitions vanish abruptly below 9 K revealing magneto-optical correlations not linked to crystal structure changes. This suggests that as the long range ordering is reduced local JT effects in the individual CrF64{\rm CrF_6^{4-}} octahedra take control of the observed behavior. Our results show clear deviation from the pattern found for the isoelectronic AxMnF3+xA_x{\rm MnF}_{3+x} system. The size of the AA-site cation is shown to be central in dictating the physical properties and phase transitions in ACrF3A{\rm CrF}_3, opening up the possibility of varying the composition to create novel states of matter with tuneable properties

J D Bernal: philosophy, politics and the science of science

    Get PDF
This paper is an examination of the philosophical and political legacy of John Desmond Bernal. It addresses the evidence of an emerging consensus on Bernal based on the recent biography of Bernal by Andrew Brown and the reviews it has received. It takes issue with this view of Bernal, which tends to be admiring of his scientific contribution, bemused by his sexuality, condescending to his philosophy and hostile to his politics. This article is a critical defence of his philosophical and political position

Natural history of a visceral leishmaniasis outbreak in highland Ethiopia

In May 2005, visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was recognized for the first time in Libo Kemken, Ethiopia, a highland region where only few cases had been reported before. We analyzed records of VL patients treated from May 25, 2005 to December 13, 2007 by the only VL treatment center in the area, maintained by Médecins Sans Frontières-Ethiopia, Operational Center Barcelona-Athens. The median age was 18 years; 77.6% were male. The overall case fatality rate was 4%, but adults 45 years or older were five times as likely to die as 5-29 year olds. Other factors associated with increased mortality included HIV infection, edema, severe malnutrition, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and vomiting. The VL epidemic expanded rapidly over a several-year period, culminating in an epidemic peak in the last third of 2005, spread over two districts, and transformed into a sustained endemic situation by 2007

    Random Packings of Frictionless Particles

We study random packings of frictionless particles at T=0. The packing fraction where the pressure becomes nonzero is the same as the jamming threshold, where the static shear modulus becomes nonzero. The distribution of threshold packing fractions narrows and its peak approaches random close-packing as the system size increases. For packing fractions within the peak, there is no self-averaging, leading to exponential decay of the interparticle force distribution.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Dynamics of disordered heavy Fermion systems

Dynamics of the disordered heavy Fermion model of Dobrosavljevic et al. are calculated using an expression for the spectral function of the Anderson model which is consistent with quantum Monte Carlo results. We compute the self-energy for three distributions of Kondo scales including the distribution of Bernal et al. for UCu{5-x}Pd{x}. The corresponding low temperature optical conductivity shows a low-frequency pseudogap, a negative optical mass enhancement, and a linear in frequency transport scattering rate, consistent with results in Y{1-x}U{x}Pd{3} and UCu{5-x}Pd{x}.Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX and 4 PS figure

    Packing of Compressible Granular Materials

3D Computer simulations and experiments are employed to study random packings of compressible spherical grains under external confining stress. Of particular interest is the rigid ball limit, which we describe as a continuous transition in which the applied stress vanishes as (\phi-\phi_c)^\beta, where \phi is the (solid phase) volume density. This transition coincides with the onset of shear rigidity. The value of \phi_c depends, for example, on whether the grains interact via only normal forces (giving rise to random close packings) or by a combination of normal and friction generated transverse forces (producing random loose packings). In both cases, near the transition, the system's response is controlled by localized force chains. As the stress increases, we characterize the system's evolution in terms of (1) the participation number, (2) the average force distribution, and (3) visualization techniques.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Phys.
