A General Relativistic Rotating Evolutionary Universe - Part II
As a sequel to (Berman, 2008a), we show that the rotation of the Universe can
be dealt by generalised Gaussian metrics, defined in this paper.
Robertson-Walker's metric has been employed with proper-time, in its standard
applications; the generalised Gaussian metric imply in the use of a
non-constant temporal metric coefficient modifying Robertson-Walker's standard
form. Experimental predictions are madeComment: 7 pages including front cover. Publishe
Streamlined quantitative BOLD for detecting visual stimulus-induced changes in oxygen extraction fraction in healthy participants:toward clinical application in human glioma
Simulations of the effect of diffusion on asymmetric spin echo based quantitative BOLD: An investigation of the origin of deoxygenated blood volume overestimation
Quantitative BOLD (qBOLD) is a technique for mapping oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) and deoxygenated blood volume (DBV) in the human brain. Recent measurements using an asymmetric spin echo (ASE) based qBOLD approach produced estimates of DBV which were systematically higher than measurements from other techniques. In this study, we investigate two hypotheses for the origin of this DBV overestimation using simulations and consider the implications for experimental measurements. Investigations were performed by combining Monte Carlo simulations of extravascular signal with an analytical model of the intravascular signal.Hypothesis 1: DBV overestimation is due to the presence of intravascular signal which is not accounted for in the analysis model. Intravascular signal was found to have a weak effect on qBOLD parameter estimates.Hypothesis 2: DBV overestimation is due to the effects of diffusion which are not accounted for in the analysis model. The effect of diffusion on the extravascular signal was found to result in a vessel radius dependent variation in qBOLD parameter estimates. In particular, DBV overestimation peaks for vessels with radii from 20 to 30 μm and is OEF dependent. This results in the systematic underestimation of OEF.Implications: The impact on experimental qBOLD measurements was investigated by simulating a more physiologically realistic distribution of vessel sizes with a small number of discrete radii. Overestimation of DBV consistent with previous experiments was observed, which was also found to be OEF dependent. This results in the progressive underestimation of the measured OEF. Furthermore, the relationship between the measured OEF and the true OEF was found to be dependent on echo time and spin echo displacement time. The results of this study demonstrate the limitations of current ASE based qBOLD measurements and provide a foundation for the optimisation of future acquisition approaches
Atom gratings produced by large angle atom beam splitters
An asymptotic theory of atom scattering by large amplitude periodic
potentials is developed in the Raman-Nath approximation. The atom grating
profile arising after scattering is evaluated in the Fresnel zone for
triangular, sinusoidal, magneto-optical, and bichromatic field potentials. It
is shown that, owing to the scattering in these potentials, two
\QTR{em}{groups} of momentum states are produced rather than two distinct
momentum components. The corresponding spatial density profile is calculated
and found to differ significantly from a pure sinusoid.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Five Dimensional Cosmological Models in General Relativity
A Five dimensional Kaluza-Klein space-time is considered in the presence of a
perfect fluid source with variable G and . An expanding universe is
found by using a relation between the metric potential and an equation of
state. The gravitational constant is found to decrease with time as whereas the variation for the cosmological constant follows as

where is the equation of state parameter and is the scale factor.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted in Int. J. Theor. Phy
Kaluza-Klein Type Robertson Walker Cosmological Model With Dynamical Cosmological Term
In this paper we have analyzed the Kaluza-Klein type Robertson Walker (RW)
cosmological models by considering three different forms of variable :
, and
. It is found that, the connecting free parameters of the
models with cosmic matter and vacuum energy density parameters are equivalent,
in the context of higher dimensional space time. The expression for the look
back time, luminosity distance and angular diameter distance are also derived.
This work has thus generalized to higher dimensions the well-known results in
four dimensional space time. It is found that there may be significant
difference in principle at least, from the analogous situation in four
dimensional space time.Comment: 16 pages, no figur
-period optical potentials
A Raman configuration of counterpropagating traveling wave fields, one of
which is polarized and the other polarized, is
shown to lead to optical potentials having periodicity.
Such optical potentials may be used to construct optical lattices having periodicity. Using numerical diagonalization, we obtain the
optical potentials for Rb atoms.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure
Some FRW Models of Accelerating Universe with Dark Energy
The paper deals with a spatially homogeneous and isotropic FRW space-time
filled with perfect fluid and dark energy components. The two sources are
assumed to interact minimally, and therefore their energy momentum tensors are
conserved separately. A special law of variation for the Hubble parameter
proposed by Berman (1983) has been utilized to solve the field equations. The
Berman's law yields two explicit forms of the scale factor governing the FRW
space-time and constant values of deceleration parameter. The role of dark
energy with variable equation of state parameter has been studied in detail in
the evolution of FRW universe. It has been found that dark energy dominates the
universe at the present epoch, which is consistent with the observations. The
physical behavior of the universe is discussed in detail.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Wavelets techniques for pointwise anti-Holderian irregularity
In this paper, we introduce a notion of weak pointwise Holder regularity,
starting from the de nition of the pointwise anti-Holder irregularity. Using
this concept, a weak spectrum of singularities can be de ned as for the usual
pointwise Holder regularity. We build a class of wavelet series satisfying the
multifractal formalism and thus show the optimality of the upper bound. We also
show that the weak spectrum of singularities is disconnected from the casual
one (denoted here strong spectrum of singularities) by exhibiting a
multifractal function made of Davenport series whose weak spectrum di ers from
the strong one
Layered Higgs Phase as a Possible Field Localisation on a Brane
So far it has been found by using lattice techniques that in the anisotropic
five--dimensional Abelian Higgs model, a layered Higgs phase exists in addition
to the expected five--dimensional one. The exploration of the phase diagram has
shown that the two Higgs phases are separated by a phase transition from the
confining phase. This transition is known to be first order. In this paper we
explore the possibility of finding a second order transition point in the
critical line which separates the first order phase transition from the
crossover region. This is shown to be the case only for the four--dimensional
Higgs layered phase whilst the phase transition to the five--dimensional broken
phase remains first order. The layered phase serves as the possible realisation
of four--dimensional spacetime dynamics which is embedded in a
five--dimensional spacetime. These results are due to gauge and scalar field
localisation by confining interactions along the extra fifth direction.Comment: 1+15 pages, 12 figure
