Parameterization of an ecosystem light-use-efficiency model for predicting savanna GPP using MODIS EVI
© 2014 Elsevier Inc. Accurate estimation of carbon fluxes across space and time is of great importance for quantifying global carbon balances. Current production efficiency models for calculation of gross primary production (GPP) depend on estimates of light-use-efficiency (LUE) obtained from look-up tables based on biome type and coarse-resolution meteorological inputs that can introduce uncertainties. Plant function is especially difficult to parameterize in the savanna biome due to the presence of varying mixtures of multiple plant functional types (PFTs)with distinct phenologies and responses to environmental factors. The objective of this study was to find a simple and robust method to accurately up-scale savanna GPP fromlocal, eddy covariance (EC) flux tower GPP measures to regional scales utilizing entirely remote sensing oservations. Here we assessed seasonal patterns of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation productswith seasonal EC tower GPP (GPPEC) at four sites along an ecological rainfall gradient (the North Australian Tropical Transect, NATT) encompassing tropical wet to dry savannas. The enhanced vegetation index (EVI) tracked the seasonal variations of GPPEC well at both site- and cross-site levels (R2= 0.84). The EVI relationship with GPPEC was further strengthened through coupling with ecosystem light-use-efficiency (eLUE), defined as the ratio of GPP to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Two savanna landscape eLUEmodels, driven by top-of-canopy incident PAR (PARTOC) or top-of-atmosphere incident PAR (PARTOA) were parameterized and investigated. GPP predicted using the eLUE models correlated well with GPPEC, with R2 of 0.85 (RMSE = 0.76 g C m-2 d-1) and 0.88 (RMSE = 0.70 g C m-2 d-1) for PARTOC and PARTOA, respectively, and were significantly improved compared to the MOD17 GPP product (R2 = 0.58, RMSE= 1.43 g C m-2 d-1). The eLUE model also minimized the seasonal hysteresis observed between greenup and brown-down in GPPEC and MODIS satellite product relationships, resulting in a consistent estimation of GPP across phenophases. The eLUE model effectively integrated the effects of variations in canopy photosynthetic capacity and environmental stress on photosynthesis, thus simplifying the up-scaling of carbon fluxes from tower to regional scale. The results fromthis study demonstrated that region-wide savanna GPP can be accurately estimated entirely with remote sensing observations without dependency on coarse-resolution ground meteorology or estimation of light-use-efficiency parameters
RF and Structural Characterization of SRF Thin Films
In the past years, energetic vacuum deposition methods have been developed in different laboratories to improve Nb/Cu technology for superconducting cavities. JLab is pursuing energetic condensation deposition via Electron Cyclotron Resonance. As part of this study, the influence of the deposition energy on the material and RF properties of the Nb thin film is investigated. The film surface and structure analyses are conducted with various techniques like X-ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Auger Electron Spectroscopy and RHEED. The microwave properties of the films are characterized on 50 mm disk samples with a 7.5 GHz surface impedance characterization system. This paper presents early results on surface impedance measurements in correlation with surface and material characterization for Nb films produced on sapphire and copper substrates
Constrained analytical interrelations in neutrino mixing
Hermitian squared mass matrices of charged leptons and light neutrinos in the
flavor basis are studied under general additive lowest order perturbations away
from the tribimaximal (TBM) limit in which a weak basis with mass diagonal
charged leptons is chosen. Simple analytical expressions are found for the
three measurable TBM-deviants in terms of perturbation parameters appearing in
the neutrino and charged lepton eigenstates in the flavor basis. Taking
unnatural cancellations to be absent and charged lepton perturbation parameters
to be small, interrelations are derived among masses, mixing angles and the
amount of CP-violation.Comment: To be published in the Springer Proceedings in the Physics Series

Responses of LAI to rainfall explain contrasting sensitivities to carbon uptake between forest and non-forest ecosystems in Australia
© 2017 The Author(s). Non-forest ecosystems (predominant in semi-arid and arid regions) contribute significantly to the increasing trend and interannual variation of land carbon uptake over the last three decades, yet the mechanisms are poorly understood. By analysing the flux measurements from 23 ecosystems in Australia, we found the the correlation between gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (Re) was significant for non-forest ecosystems, but was not for forests. In non-forest ecosystems, both GPP and Re increased with rainfall, and, consequently net ecosystem production (NEP) increased with rainfall. In forest ecosystems, GPP and Re were insensitive to rainfall. Furthermore sensitivity of GPP to rainfall was dominated by the rainfall-driven variation of LAI rather GPP per unit LAI in non-forest ecosystems, which was not correctly reproduced by current land models, indicating that the mechanisms underlying the response of LAI to rainfall should be targeted for future model development
A formally verified compiler back-end
This article describes the development and formal verification (proof of
semantic preservation) of a compiler back-end from Cminor (a simple imperative
intermediate language) to PowerPC assembly code, using the Coq proof assistant
both for programming the compiler and for proving its correctness. Such a
verified compiler is useful in the context of formal methods applied to the
certification of critical software: the verification of the compiler guarantees
that the safety properties proved on the source code hold for the executable
compiled code as well
A Simple Grand Unified Relation between Neutrino Mixing and Quark Mixing
It is proposed that all flavor mixing is caused by the mixing of the three
quark and lepton families with vectorlike fermions in 5 + 5-bar multiplets of
SU(5). This simple assumption implies that both V_{CKM} and U_{MNS} are
generated by a single matrix. The entire 3-by-3 complex mass matrix of the
neutrinos M_{nu} is then found to have a simple expression in terms of two
complex parameters and an overall scale. Thus, all the presently unknown
neutrino parameters are predicted. The best fits are for theta_{atm} less than
or approximately 40 degrees. The leptonic Dirac CP phase is found to be
somewhat greater than pi radians.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, one table. Typos correcte
Mass hierarchy discrimination with atmospheric neutrinos in large volume ice/water Cherenkov detectors
Large mass ice/water Cherenkov experiments, optimized to detect low energy
(1-20 GeV) atmospheric neutrinos, have the potential to discriminate between
normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies. The sensitivity depends on
several model and detector parameters, such as the neutrino flux profile and
normalization, the Earth density profile, the oscillation parameter
uncertainties, and the detector effective mass and resolution. A proper
evaluation of the mass hierarchy discrimination power requires a robust
statistical approach. In this work, the Toy Monte Carlo, based on an extended
unbinned likelihood ratio test statistic, was used. The effect of each model
and detector parameter, as well as the required detector exposure, was then
studied. While uncertainties on the Earth density and atmospheric neutrino flux
profiles were found to have a minor impact on the mass hierarchy
discrimination, the flux normalization, as well as some of the oscillation
parameter (\Delta m^2_{31}, \theta_{13}, \theta_{23}, and \delta_{CP})
uncertainties and correlations resulted critical. Finally, the minimum required
detector exposure, the optimization of the low energy threshold, and the
detector resolutions were also investigated.Comment: 23 pages, 16 figure
The , , and mesons in a double pole QCD Sum Rule
We use the method of double pole QCD sum rule which is basically a fit with
two exponentials of the correlation function, where we can extract the masses
and decay constants of mesons as a function of the Borel mass. We apply this
method to study the mesons: , , and
. We also present predictions for the toponiuns masses
of m(1S)=357 GeV and m(2S)=374 GeV.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures in Braz J Phys (2016
KeV Warm Dark Matter and Composite Neutrinos
Elementary keV sterile Dirac neutrinos can be a natural ingredient of the
composite neutrino scenario. For a certain class of composite neutrino
theories, these sterile neutrinos naturally have the appropriate mixing angles
to be resonantly produced warm dark matter (WDM). Alternatively, we show these
sterile neutrinos can be WDM produced by an entropy-diluted thermal freeze-out,
with the necessary entropy production arising not from an out-of-equilibrium
decay, but rather from the confinement of the composite neutrino sector,
provided there is sufficient supercooling.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, published versio
