A Dual Geometry of the Hadron in Dense Matter
We identify the dual geometry of the hadron phase of dense nuclear matter and
investigate the confinement/deconfinement phase transition. We suggest that the
low temperature phase of the RN black hole with the full backreaction of the
bulk gauge field is described by the zero mass limit of the RN black hole with
hard wall. We calculated the density dependence of critical temperature and
found that the phase diagram closes. We also study the density dependence of
the rho meson mass.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, typos corrected, references adde
Non-Perturbative Planar Equivalence and the Absence of Closed String Tachyons
We consider 'orbifold' and 'orientifold' field theories from the dual closed
string theory side. We argue that a necessary condition for planar equivalence
to hold is the absence of a closed string tachyonic mode in the dual
non-supersymmetric string. We analyze several gauge theories on R3xS1. In the
specific case of U(N) theories with symmetric/anti-symmetric fermions
('orientifold field theories') the relevant closed string theory is
tachyon-free at large compactification radius (due to winding modes), but it
develops a tachyonic mode below a critical radius. Our finding is with
agreement with field theory expectations of a phase transition from a C-parity
violating phase to a C-parity preserving phase as the compactification radius
increases. In the case of U(N)xU(N) theories with bi-fundamental matter
('orbifold field theories') a tachyon is always present in the string spectrum,
at any compactification radius. We conclude that on R4 planar equivalence holds
for 'orientfiold field theories', but fails for 'orbifold field theories'
daughters of N=4 SYM and suggest the same for daughters of N=1 SYM. We also
discuss examples of SO/Sp gauge theories with symmetric/anti-symmetric
fermions. In this case planar equivalence holds at any compactification radius
-in agreement with the absence of tachyons in the string dual.Comment: 14 pages, Latex. 3 eps figures. v2: ref. added. v3: clarifying

Introduction to M Theory and AdS/CFT Duality
An introductory survey of some of the developments that have taken place in
superstring theory in the past few years is presented. The main focus is on
three particular dualities. The first one is the appearance of an 11th
dimension in the strong coupling limit of the type IIA theory, which give rise
to M theory. The second one is the duality between the type IIB theory
compactified on a circle and M theory on a two-torus. The final topic is an
introduction to the recently proposed duality between superstring theory or M
theory on certain anti de Sitter space backgrounds and conformally invariant
quantum field theories.Comment: 26 pages; To be published in the Proceedings of a conference held in

Slow fluctuations in enhanced Raman scattering and surface roughness relaxation
We propose an explanation for the recently measured slow fluctuations and
``blinking'' in the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum of single
molecules adsorbed on a silver colloidal particle. We suggest that these
fluctuations may be related to the dynamic relaxation of the surface roughness
on the nanometer scale and show that there are two classes of roughness with
qualitatively different dynamics. The predictions agree with measurements of
surface roughness relaxation. Using a theoretical model for the kinetics of
surface roughness relaxation in the presence of charges and optical electrical
fields, we predict that the high-frequency electromagnetic field increases both
the effective surface tension and the surface diffusion constant and thus
accelerates the surface smoothing kinetics and time scale of the Raman
fluctuations in manner that is linear with the laser power intensity, while the
addition of salt retards the surface relaxation kinetics and increases the time
scale of the fluctuations. These predictions are in qualitative agreement with
the Raman experiments
Thermodynamic behavior of IIA string theory on a pp-wave
We obtain the thermal one loop free energy and the Hagedorn temperature of
IIA superstring theory on the pp-wave geometry which comes from the circle
compactification of the maximally supersymmetric eleven dimensional one. We use
both operator and path integral methods and find the complete agreement between
them in the free energy expression. In particular, the free energy in the limit is shown to be identical with that of IIB string theory on
maximally supersymmetric pp-wave, which indicates the universal thermal
behavior of strings in the large class of pp-wave backgrounds. We show that the
zero point energy and the modular properties of the free energy are naturally
incorporated into the path integral formalism.Comment: 25 pages, Latex, JHEP style, v4: revised for clarity without change

Quivers from Matrix Factorizations
We discuss how matrix factorizations offer a practical method of computing
the quiver and associated superpotential for a hypersurface singularity. This
method also yields explicit geometrical interpretations of D-branes (i.e.,
quiver representations) on a resolution given in terms of Grassmannians. As an
example we analyze some non-toric singularities which are resolved by a single
CP1 but have "length" greater than one. These examples have a much richer
structure than conifolds. A picture is proposed that relates matrix
factorizations in Landau-Ginzburg theories to the way that matrix
factorizations are used in this paper to perform noncommutative resolutions.Comment: 33 pages, (minor changes
Geometric K-Homology of Flat D-Branes
We use the Baum-Douglas construction of K-homology to explicitly describe
various aspects of D-branes in Type II superstring theory in the absence of
background supergravity form fields. We rigorously derive various stability
criteria for states of D-branes and show how standard bound state constructions
are naturally realized directly in terms of topological K-cycles. We formulate
the mechanism of flux stabilization in terms of the K-homology of non-trivial
fibre bundles. Along the way we derive a number of new mathematical results in
topological K-homology of independent interest.Comment: 45 pages; v2: References added; v3: Some substantial revision and

More on the Tensorial Central Charges in N=1 Supersymmetric Gauge Theories (BPS Wall Junctions and Strings)
We study the central extensions of the N=1 superalgebras relevant to the
soliton solutions with the axial geometry - strings, wall junctions, etc. A
general expression valid in any four-dimensional gauge theory is obtained. We
prove that the only gauge theory admitting BPS strings at weak coupling is
supersymmetric electrodynamics with the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. The problem of
ambiguity of the (1/2,1/2) central charge in the generalized Wess-Zumino models
and gauge theories with matter is addressed and solved. A possibility of
existence of the BPS strings at strong coupling in N=2 theories is discussed. A
representation of different strings within the brane picture is presented.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures, 1 reference added, typos corrected, Sec. 9.3

Ramond-Ramond Fields, Fractional Branes and Orbifold Differential K-Theory
We study D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on global orbifolds of Type II
string theory with vanishing H-flux using methods of equivariant K-theory and
K-homology. We illustrate how Bredon equivariant cohomology naturally realizes
stringy orbifold cohomology. We emphasize its role as the correct cohomological
tool which captures known features of the low-energy effective field theory,
and which provides new consistency conditions for fractional D-branes and
Ramond-Ramond fields on orbifolds. We use an equivariant Chern character from
equivariant K-theory to Bredon cohomology to define new Ramond-Ramond couplings
of D-branes which generalize previous examples. We propose a definition for
groups of differential characters associated to equivariant K-theory. We derive
a Dirac quantization rule for Ramond-Ramond fluxes, and study flat
Ramond-Ramond potentials on orbifolds.Comment: 46 pages; v2: typos correcte
