Constraints on the Gluon Density from Lepton Pair Production

    Get PDF
The hadroproduction of lepton pairs with mass Q and finite transverse momentum Q_T is described in perturbative QCD by the same partonic subprocesses as prompt photon production. We demonstrate that, like prompt photon production, lepton pair production is dominated by quark-gluon scattering in the region Q_T>Q/2. This feature leads to sensitivity to the gluon density in kinematical regimes accessible in collider and fixed target experiments, and it provides a new independent method for constraining the gluon density.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, to appear in the Proceedings of the Fermilab Physics at Run II Workshop on ``QCD and Weak Boson Physics

Flow of entropy in the evolution of the B^0 anti B^0 system: Upper bound on CP violation from unidirectionality

We have previously studied the time-dependence of a B anti B meson mixture in terms of its density matrix. The requirement that the absolute value of the Stokes vector zeta(t) should evolve monotonically from its initial value zeta(0)=0 to its final value zeta(infinity)=1 was shown to lead to an upper bound on the CP violating overlap . In the present note we consider an entropy variable S as an alternative measure of mixing. We show that exactly the same upper bound emerges from the requirement that the flow of entropy is unidirectional (dS/dt<0). We compare the entropic current dS/dt with and without CP violation and identify certain physical features that appear when the bound on is violated.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Production of a Prompt Photon in Association with Charm at Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

A second order, O(αs2)O(\alpha ^2_s), calculation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics of the two particle inclusive cross section is presented for the reaction p+pˉ→γ+c+Xp +\bar{p}\rightarrow \gamma + c + X for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. The combination of analytic and Monte Carlo integration methods used here to perform phase-space integrations facilitates imposition of photon isolation restrictions and other selections of relevance in experiments. Differential distributions are provided for various observables. Positive correlations in rapidity are predicted.Comment: 27 pages in RevTex plus 14 figures in one compressed PS fil

Top quark physics at muon and other future colliders

    Get PDF
The top quark will be extensively studied at future muon colliders. The threshold cross section can be measured precisely, and the small beam energy spread is especially effective at making the measurement useful. We report on all the activities of the top quark working group, including talks on top quark physics at other future colliders.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, Summary report of the Top Quark Working Group at the Workshop on Physics at the First Muon Collider and at the Front End of a Muon Collider, November 6-9, 1997, Fermi National Accelerator Laborator

We examine pair mass dependence near threshold as a means to measure the spin of the top quark in hadron collisions, and we discuss the possibility that a top squark signal could be hidden among the top events.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, 3 figures. Isolated leptons from heavy flavor decays: Theory and data

Events with isolated leptons play a prominent role in signatures of new physics phenomena at high energy collider physics facilities. In earlier publications, we examine the standard model contribution to isolated lepton production from bottom and charm mesons and baryons through their semileptonic decays (b, c -> l + X), showing that this source can overwhelm the effects of other standard model processes in some kinematic domains. In this paper, we show that we obtain good agreement with recent Tevatron collider data, both validating our simulations and showing that we underestimate the magnitude of the heavy-flavor contribution to the isolated lepton yields. We also show that the isolation requirement acts as a narrow bandpass filter on the momentum of the isolated lepton, and we illustrate the effect of this filter on the background to Higgs boson observation in the dilepton mode. We introduce and justify a new rule of thumb: isolated electrons and muons from heavy flavor decay are produced with roughly the same distributions as b and c quarks, but with 1/200 times the rates of b and c production, respectively.Comment: 12 pg, revtex, 5 fig, corrected typo

Next-to-leading Order SUSY-QCD Calculation of Associated Production of Gauginos and Gluinos

    Get PDF
Results are presented of a next-to-leading order calculation in perturbative QCD of the production of charginos and neutralinos in association with gluinos at hadron colliders. Predictions for cross sections are shown at the energies of the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN Large Hadron Collider for a typical supergravity (SUGRA) model of the sparticle mass spectrum and for a light gluino model.Comment: 3 pages, latex, 4 figures, paper presented by E. An upper limit on CP violation in the Bs0−Bˉs0B^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s system

In a previous publication we noted that the time dependence of an incoherent B0−Bˉ0B^0-\bar{B}^0 mixture undergoes a qualitative change when the magnitude of CP violation δ\delta exceeds a critical value. Requiring, on physical grounds, that the system evolve from an initial incoherent state to a final pure state in a monotonic way, yields a new upper limit for δ\delta. The recent measurement of the wrong charge semileptonic asymmetry of Bs0B_s^0 mesons presented by the D0 collaboration is outside this bound by one standard deviation. If this result is confirmed it implies the existence of a new quantum mechanical oscillation phenomenon.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, version submitted for publication (Physical Review
