Directed self-organization of graphene nanoribbons on SiC
Realization of post-CMOS graphene electronics requires production of
semiconducting graphene, which has been a labor-intensive process. We present
tailoring of silicon carbide crystals via conventional photolithography and
microelectronics processing to enable templated graphene growth on
4H-SiC{1-10n} (n = 8) crystal facets rather than the customary {0001} planes.
This allows self-organized growth of graphene nanoribbons with dimensions
defined by those of the facet. Preferential growth is confirmed by Raman
spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM)
measurements, and electrical characterization of prototypic graphene devices is
presented. Fabrication of > 10,000 top-gated graphene transistors on a 0.24 cm2
SiC chip demonstrates scalability of this process and represents the highest

A Definitive Signal of Multiple Supersymmetry Breaking
If the lightest observable-sector supersymmetric particle (LOSP) is charged
and long-lived, then it may be possible to indirectly measure the Planck mass
at the LHC and provide a spectacular confirmation of supergravity as a symmetry
of nature. Unfortunately, this proposal is only feasible if the gravitino is
heavy enough to be measured at colliders, and this condition is in direct
conflict with constraints from big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). In this work, we
show that the BBN bound can be naturally evaded in the presence of multiple
sectors which independently break supersymmetry, since there is a new decay
channel of the LOSP to a goldstino. Certain regions of parameter space allow
for a direct measurement of LOSP decays into both the goldstino and the
gravitino at the LHC. If the goldstino/gravitino mass ratio is measured to be
2, as suggested by theory, then this would provide dramatic verification of the
existence of multiple supersymmetry breaking and sequestering. A variety of
consistent cosmological scenarios are obtained within this framework. In
particular, if an R symmetry is imposed, then the gauge-gaugino-goldstino
interaction vertices can be forbidden. In this case, there is no bound on the
reheating temperature from goldstino overproduction, and thermal leptogenesis

Tailoring the atomic structure of graphene nanoribbons by STM lithography
The practical realization of nano-scale electronics faces two major
challenges: the precise engineering of the building blocks and their assembly
into functional circuits. In spite of the exceptional electronic properties of
carbon nanotubes only basic demonstration-devices have been realized by
time-consuming processes. This is mainly due to the lack of selective growth
and reliable assembly processes for nanotubes. However, graphene offers an
attractive alternative. Here we report the patterning of graphene nanoribbons
(GNRs) and bent junctions with nanometer precision, well-defined widths and
predetermined crystallographic orientations allowing us to fully engineer their
electronic structure using scanning tunneling microscope (STM) lithography. The
atomic structure and electronic properties of the ribbons have been
investigated by STM and tunneling spectroscopy measurements. Opening of
confinement gaps up to 0.5 eV, allowing room temperature operation of GNR-based
devices, is reported. This method avoids the difficulties of assembling
nano-scale components and allows the realization of complete integrated

Multiple Parton Interactions in Z+jets production at the LHC. A comparison of factorized and non--factorized double parton distribution functions
We examine the contribution of Multiple Parton Interactions to Z+n-jets
production at the LHC, n=2,3,4, where the Z boson is assumed to decay
leptonically. We compare the results obtained with the correlated GS09 double
parton distribution function with those obtained with two instances of fully
factorized single parton distribution functions: MSTW2008LO and CTEQ6LO. It
appears quite feasible to measure the MPI contribution to Z+2/3/4 jets already
in the first phase of the LHC with a total luminosity of one inverse femtobarn
at 7 TeV. If as expected the trigger threshold for single photons is around 80
GeV, Z+2-jets production may well turn out to be more easily observable than
the gamma+3-jets channel. The MPI cross section is dominated by relatively soft
events with two jets balancing in transverse momentum.Comment: 15 pages, 3 plot
Supersymmetry Without Prejudice at the LHC
The discovery and exploration of Supersymmetry in a model-independent fashion
will be a daunting task due to the large number of soft-breaking parameters in
the MSSM. In this paper, we explore the capability of the ATLAS detector at the
LHC ( TeV, 1 fb) to find SUSY within the 19-dimensional
pMSSM subspace of the MSSM using their standard transverse missing energy and
long-lived particle searches that were essentially designed for mSUGRA. To this
end, we employ a set of k previously generated model points in the
19-dimensional parameter space that satisfy all of the existing experimental
and theoretical constraints. Employing ATLAS-generated SM backgrounds and
following their approach in each of 11 missing energy analyses as closely as
possible, we explore all of these k model points for a possible SUSY
signal. To test our analysis procedure, we first verify that we faithfully
reproduce the published ATLAS results for the signal distributions for their
benchmark mSUGRA model points. We then show that, requiring all sparticle
masses to lie below 1(3) TeV, almost all(two-thirds) of the pMSSM model points
are discovered with a significance in at least one of these 11 analyses
assuming a 50\% systematic error on the SM background. If this systematic error
can be reduced to only 20\% then this parameter space coverage is increased.
These results are indicative that the ATLAS SUSY search strategy is robust
under a broad class of Supersymmetric models. We then explore in detail the
properties of the kinematically accessible model points which remain
unobservable by these search analyses in order to ascertain problematic cases

Mid-infrared plasmons in scaled graphene nanostructures
Plasmonics takes advantage of the collective response of electrons to
electromagnetic waves, enabling dramatic scaling of optical devices beyond the
diffraction limit. Here, we demonstrate the mid-infrared (4 to 15 microns)
plasmons in deeply scaled graphene nanostructures down to 50 nm, more than 100
times smaller than the on-resonance light wavelength in free space. We reveal,
for the first time, the crucial damping channels of graphene plasmons via its
intrinsic optical phonons and scattering from the edges. A plasmon lifetime of
20 femto-seconds and smaller is observed, when damping through the emission of
an optical phonon is allowed. Furthermore, the surface polar phonons in SiO2
substrate underneath the graphene nanostructures lead to a significantly
modified plasmon dispersion and damping, in contrast to a non-polar
diamond-like-carbon (DLC) substrate. Much reduced damping is realized when the
plasmon resonance frequencies are close to the polar phonon frequencies. Our
study paves the way for applications of graphene in plasmonic waveguides,
modulators and detectors in an unprecedentedly broad wavelength range from
sub-terahertz to mid-infrared.Comment: submitte
Duration of fever and serious bacterial infections in children: a systematic review
Background: Parents of febrile children frequently contact primary care. Longer duration of fever has been related to increased risk for serious bacterial infections (SBI). However, the evidence for this association remains controversial. We assessed the predictive value of duration of fever for SBI. Methods: Studies from MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane databases (from January 1991 to December 2009) were retrieved. We included studies describing children aged 2 months to 6 years in countries with high Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccination coverage. Duration of fever had to be studied as a predictor for serious bacterial infections. Results: Seven studies assessed the association between duration of fever and serious bacterial infections; three of these found a relationship. Conclusion: The predictive value of duration of fever for identifying serious bacterial infections in children remains inconclusive. None of these seven studies was performed in primary care. Allergic Rhinitis and its Associated Co-Morbidities at Bugando Medical Centre in Northwestern Tanzania; A Prospective Review of 190 Cases.
Allergic rhinitis is one of the commonest atopic diseases which contribute to significant morbidity world wide while its epidemiology in Tanzania remains sparse. There was paucity of information regarding allergic rhinitis in our setting; therefore it was important to conduct this study to describe our experience on allergic rhinitis, associated co-morbidities and treatment outcome in patients attending Bugando Medical Centre. This was descriptive cross-sectional study involving all patients with a clinical diagnosis of allergic rhinitis at Bugando Medical Centre over a three-month period between June 2011 and August 2011. Data was collected using a pre-tested coded questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS statistical computer software version 17.0. A total of 190 patients were studied giving the prevalence of allergic rhinitis 14.7%. The median age of the patients was 8.5 years. The male to female ratio was 1:1. Adenoid hypertrophy, tonsillitis, hypertrophy of inferior turbinate, nasal polyps, otitis media and sinusitis were the most common co-morbidities affecting 92.6% of cases and were the major reason for attending hospital services. Sleep disturbance was common in children with adenoids hypertrophy (χ2 = 28.691, P = 0.000). Allergic conjunctivitis was found in 51.9%. The most common identified triggers were dust, strong perfume odors and cold weather (P < 0.05). Strong perfume odors affect female than males (χ2 = 4.583, P = 0.032). In this study family history of allergic rhinitis was not a significant risk factor (P =0.423). The majority of patients (68.8%) were treated surgically for allergic rhinitis co morbidities. Post operative complication and mortality rates were 2.9% and 1.6% respectively. The overall median duration of hospital stay of in-patients was 3 days (2 - 28 days). Most patients (98.4%) had satisfactory results at discharge. The study shows that allergic rhinitis is common in our settings representing 14.7% of all otorhinolaryngology and commonly affecting children and adolescent. Sufferers seek medical services due to co-morbidities of which combination of surgical and medical treatment was needed. High index of suspicions in diagnosing allergic rhinitis and early treatment is recommended
