An empirical study of occupants' evaluation of short-term combined thermal, visual, and acoustic indoor-environmental exposure

Recently, more attention is being paid to human sensation and perception processes under multidomain indoor-environmental exposure situations. Despite the existing body of research in this area, many more studies must be conducted to elevate the level of our understanding of such processes. In this paper, we present such a study. Thereby, two identical small office units are assembled within a larger laboratory space. Thermal and visual conditions can be separately controlled in these two units. Furthermore, different acoustical conditions can be emulated in the larger laboratory space that houses the two small office units. During the experiments, participants occupy these offices and are exposed to a number of different combinations of indoor-environmental (thermal, visual, and auditory) factors. A key query thereby is as follows: Are identical thermal conditions evaluated differently given interference attributable to other exposure variables (e.g., glare, noise). Agent-based modelling and energy performance assessment: a co-simulation case study

A number of recent research efforts focus on the inclusion of more detailed models of occupants in building performance computing. Thereby, agent-based modelling (ABM) has the theoretical potential to capture the dynamic and complex patterns of occupants’ presence and behaviour in buildings. This paper starts with a brief reference to recent reviews of the state of the art concerning the deployment of ABM in building energy simulation. Subsequently, an illustrative case study is used to explore the potential and current challenges of ABM in building performance simulation. The case study involves the coupling of ABM with a building simulation model to evaluate the influence of occupants’ energy consciousness and thermal comfort preferences on buildings’ energy performance

Ein neues Bodenschutzkonzept für den vorsorgenden Bodenschutz

Aus der Notwendigkeit heraus, "nachhaltig die Funktionen des Bodens zu sichern" (§1 BBodSchG), und damit auch Bodenschutz vorsorgend in Planungsprozesse zu integrieren, wurde ein neues Bodenschutzkonzept entwickelt. Es basiert auf einer differenzierten, aber gleichzeitig nachvollziehbaren Bodenbewertung. Das Problem bei der Bodenbewertung ist, dass etwas bewertet werden soll, für das - je nach Fragestellung - immer wieder neue Ziele definiert werden müssen. Deshalb liegt der Bodenbewertung ein Zielsystem zu Grunde, das Schutzziele klar festlegt und mit Hilfe dessen die Bodenbewertung nachvollziehbar wird. Für das Bodenschutzkonzept werden aus der Vielzahl möglicher Kriterien wichtige vorgestellt, aus denen die - bezogen auf dieses Zielsystem - wesentlichen ausgewählt werden können. Um aussagekräftige Daten für diese Kriterien zu erhalten stützt sich die Bodenbewertung auf bodenkundliche sowie landschaftsgenetisch-geomorphologische Zusammenhänge. Die eigentliche Bewertung erfolgt dann in drei Schritten: zuerst eine Einzelbewertung, dann zusammengefasst nach den Bodenfunktionen Lebensraumfunktion, Regelungsfunktion, Informationsfunktion, dem Eigenwert des Bodens (Schutzwürdigkeit) sowie der Empfindlichkeit und Gefährdung (Schutzbedürftigkeit). Im dritten Schritt werden diese Bewertungen dann zu einer gewichteten, verbal-argumentativen Gesamtbewertung der Schutzwürdigkeit und Schutzbedürftigkeit zusammengefasst. Mit Hilfe des Bewertungsverfahrens werden auch Zielkonflikte zwischen den unterschiedlichen Schutzgütern offengelegt. Schutzmaßnahmen ergeben sich dann stringent aus den vorher im Zielsystem gesetzten Prämissen, d.h., Ziele und Maßnahmen sind begründbar gewählt, stehen in einem ökologischen Gesamtzusammenhang und lassen sich sehr gut nachvollziehen. Das hier vorgestellte, neue Bodenschutzkonzept ist für verschiedene Planungsebenen geeignet. Es ist in unterschiedlichen Naturräumen anwendbar, kann verschiedene Schutzziele mit Hilfe des Zielsystems bestimmen und so z.B. die Naturraumvielfalt in einem Gebiet ebenso berücksichtigen wie die Meinungsvielfalt, was unter vorsorgendem Bodenschutz zu verstehen sei.A new soil protection conception has been developed, because it is necessary to sustainably protect soil functions (Section 1 of the German Federal Soil Protection Act), to take precautions against risk to soil and to integrate soil protection in land planning processes. This soil protection conception is based on a differentiated but at the same time comprehensible soil evaluation. For every planning process a new set of objectives of soil evaluation has to be determined. This is one of the problems of soil evaluation. Therefore, a hierarchical "system of objectives" has been defined, that specifies evaluation objectives. From the variety of soil evaluation criteria the most important were chosen, in order to simply planning processes. The data for these soil evaluation criteria can be achieved by using soil science methods as well as information deriving from landscape evolution and geomorphology. The soil evaluation itself takes place in three steps: first a single evaluation, second a combined evaluation taking into account the soil functions and the value of the soil as such (soil worthy of protection) as well as the soil sensitivity (soil in danger). A third step leads to a final weighted and aggregated verbal evaluation of the soil value and the soil sensitivity. Then measures for soil protection can be taken into account, following the premises of the evaluation objectives. That is to say, both, aims and measures are justified. They are also based on an ecological interrelationship, and are comprehensible. This new soil protection conception can be applied on different levels of planning processes and nature areas.
