Blueprint for fault-tolerant quantum computation with Rydberg atoms

    Get PDF
We present a blueprint for building a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer with Rydberg atoms. Our scheme, which is based on the surface code, uses individually addressable, optically trapped atoms as qubits and exploits electromagnetically induced transparency to perform the multiqubit gates required for error correction and computation. We discuss the advantages and challenges of using Rydberg atoms to build such a quantum computer, and we perform error correction simulations to obtain an error threshold for our scheme. Our findings suggest that Rydberg atoms are a promising candidate for quantum computation, but gate fidelities need to improve before fault-tolerant universal quantum computation can be achieved

GTP modulates calcium binding and cation-induced conformational changes in erythrocyte transglutaminase

AbstractCalcium binding to erythrocyte transglutaminase was determined by equilibrium dialysis. Results indicate that 6 ions are bound to the enzyme both in the absence and in the presence of GTP and. that the nucleotide reduces the affinity of the enzyme for calcium. Furthermore, I− fluorescence quenching and proteolytic inactivation experiments proved that GTP also alters the conformation of the enzyme. It is thus suggested that multiple mechanisms are involved in the regulation of the enzyme activity by GTP

Suspension of mandatory vaccination and public health preserving: Rovigo Local Health Unit experience after appliance of Veneto regional law 7/2007

The burden of infectious diseases preventable by vaccination decreased considerably over last decades in all countries pro- vided with effective immunization schedules. Implementation of these programs with new vaccines has started discussion on dual- ity between mandatory and recommended vaccinations. Regional autonomy has allowed the Veneto Region, with introduction of Law 7/2007, to experience suspension of all mandatory childhood vaccinations, replaced by an active and free offer of all vaccines recognized as safe and effective. Coverage?s trends and accept- ance of invitation are carefully monitored to avoid loss of com- pliance and reduction of immunized children. The evaluation, performed on population of Rovigo ULSS18 for 2002-2008 birth cohorts (2008 is the first concerned by the change), revealed no fall for previously mandatory vaccinations, but rather a slight increase. Percentage of non-vaccinated children was negligible. The leading cause of non-vaccination to polio was inability to deliver the letter of invitation due to wrong address. An informed dissent was expressed only by a minority (0.9% in 2008 birth cohort). Compliance to immunization offer was elevated both for previ- ously compulsory and recommended vaccinations. Experience of Rovigo ULSS 18 showed that, in a context of already high levels of coverage for recommended vaccinations with optimal organization of immunization services, coverage rates for ex- mandatory vaccines remain unchanged. Further research and reports are required to carefully assess the effect on coverage rates in next birth cohorts, but available data are encourag- ing. Similar legislative measures can be successfully adopted by other Regions with starting conditions comparable to Veneto Region

Protein glycation in the aging male Sprague-Dawley rat: effects of antiaging diet restrictions

    Get PDF
Protein glycation and accumulation of advanced glycosylated end-products (AGEs) are supposed to play an important role in the process of aging. Dietary restriction increases life span and delays the onset of most age-associated diseases. Age-dependent changes in glucose homeostasis and glycated plasma proteins and hemoglobin were determined, and AGEs formation was measured as fluorescence in skin and aortic collagens in male Sprague-Dawley rats fed ad libitum or subjected to every-other-day feeding or 40% food restriction. In aging control rats, skin and aortic collagen-linked fluorescence increased with a similar exponential curve (aortic value being always higher), whereas glycated plasma protein and hemoglobin decreased slightly. Dietary restrictions decreased glycated plasma proteins and fluorescent products in skin collagen of younger but not older rats, and did not affect glycated hemoglobin or aortic collagen fluorescence. In conclusion, our data indicate that age-related changes in glucose homeostasis do not play a substantial role in aging; and collagen-linked fluorescence increases significantly during aging, but it may not be sensitive to dietary intervention

Impairment of the priming effect of glucose on insulin secretion from isolated islets of aging rats

The time-dependent potentiation (TDP) of insulin release or priming effect exerted by glucose was evaluated in the islets of Langerhans of mature and old rats. Islets isolated from 12- and 26-month-old male Sprague-Dawley rats and incubated for two consecutive 60-min periods in the presence of various stimulating agents were unable to enhance their insulin responsiveness significantly during the second incubation period and showed other abnormalities in their sensitivity to secretagogues compared with islets from 3-month-old animals. The priming action of glucose plus arginine or isobutylmethylxanthine (IBMX) was not observed in islets from 12-month-old rats, but surprisingly, islets from senescent rats showed a restoration of the beta-cell memory in the presence of IBMX. Interestingly, the islets isolated from 2-month-old animals previously exposed to an intravenous glucose load in vivo released approximately twice as much insulin as the islets taken from fed rats not subjected to the load. This potentiation exerted by the intravenous glucose administration was reduced but not abolished in the islets of glucose-intolerant, 12-month-old rats. In conclusion, the glucose TDP of insulin secretion is impaired in islets of mature and old rats, confirming an early loss of sensitivity of beta-cells to secretagogues during agin

Deterministic single-atom excitation via adiabatic passage and Rydberg blockade

We propose to use adiabatic rapid passage with a chirped laser pulse in the strong dipole blockade regime to deterministically excite only one Rydberg atom from randomly loaded optical dipole traps or optical lattices. The chirped laser excitation is shown to be insensitive to the random number \textit{N} of the atoms in the traps. Our method overcomes the problem of the N\sqrt {N} dependence of the collective Rabi frequency, which was the main obstacle for deterministic single-atom excitation in the ensembles with unknown \textit{N}, and can be applied for single-atom loading of dipole traps and optical lattices.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Topological dragging of solitons

We put forward properties of solitons supported by optical lattices featuring topological dislocations, and show that solitons experience attractive and repulsive forces around the dislocations. Suitable arrangements of dislocations are even found to form soliton traps, and the properties of such solitons are shown to crucially depend on the trap topology. The uncovered phenomenon opens a new concept for soliton control and manipulation, e.g., in disk-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letter

Sublattice addressing and spin-dependent motion of atoms in a double-well lattice

We load atoms into every site of an optical lattice and selectively spin flip atoms in a sublattice consisting of every other site. These selected atoms are separated from their unselected neighbors by less than an optical wavelength. We also show spin-dependent transport, where atomic wave packets are coherently separated into adjacent sites according to their internal state. These tools should be useful for quantum information processing and quantum simulation of lattice models with neutral atoms
