Anomie, Deviant Behavior, and the Olympics
Criminal and deviant behavior is known to occur in all places, settings, and times. The Olympics, both Summer and Winter, are not immune to deviant behavior. This paper focuses on the specific types of deviant and criminal acts arising out of the Olympic settings and the anomic factors that possibly lead to deviance in this particular arena. The way that athletes are conformists, innovators, ritualists, and retreatists is considered along with the way that norm confusion influences the Olympic event. Also considered is the role of norm saturation in confusing the way actors interpret appropriate behavior in this setting. Implications are provided
Multicanonical Simulations of the Tails of the Order-Parameter Distribution of the Two-Dimensional Ising Model
We report multicanonical Monte Carlo simulations of the tails of the
order-parameter distribution of the two-dimensional Ising model for fixed
boundary conditions. Clear numerical evidence for "fat" stretched exponential
tails is found below the critical temperature, indicating the possible presence

Freezing by Monte Carlo Phase-Switch
We describe a Monte Carlo procedure which allows sampling of the disjoint
configuration spaces associated with crystalline and fluid phases, within a
single simulation. The method utilises biased sampling techniques to enhance
the probabilities of gateway states (in each phase) which are such that a
global switch (to the other phase) can be implemented. Equilibrium
freezing-point parameters can be determined directly; statistical uncertainties
prescribed transparently; and finite-size effects quantified systematically.
The method is potentially quite general; we apply it to the freezing of hard

Calcium Carbonate Suppresses Haem Toxicity Markers without Calcium Phosphate Side Effect on Colon Carcinogenesis
Red meat intake is associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer. We have previously shown that haemin, haemoglobin and red meat promote carcinogen-induced preneoplastic lesions, aberrant crypt foci, in the colon of rats. We have also shown that dietary calcium phosphate inhibits haemin-induced promotion, and normalizes faecal lipoperoxides and cytotoxicity. Unexpectedly, high-calcium phosphate control diet-fed rats had more preneoplastic lesions in the colon than low-calcium control diet-fed rats. The present study was designed to find a calcium supplementation with no adverse effect, by testing several doses and types of calcium salts. One in vitro study and two short-term studies in rats identified calcium carbonate as the most effective calcium salt to bind haem in vitro and to decrease faecal biomarkers previously associated with increased carcinogenesis: faecal water cytotoxicity, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. A long term carcinogenesis study in dimethylhydrazine-injected rats demonstrated that a diet containing 100 µmol/g calcium carbonate did not promote aberrant crypt foci, in contrast with previously tested calcium phosphate diet. The results suggest that calcium carbonate, and not calcium phosphate, should be used to reduce haem-associated colorectal cancer risk in meat-eaters. They support the concept that the nature of the associated anion to a protective metal ion is important for chemoprevention
Simulation of Lattice Polymers with Multi-Self-Overlap Ensemble
A novel family of dynamical Monte Carlo algorithms for lattice polymers is
proposed. Our central idea is to simulate an extended ensemble in which the
self-avoiding condition is systematically weakened. The degree of the
self-overlap is controlled in a similar manner as the multicanonical ensemble.
As a consequence, the ensemble --the multi-self-overlap ensemble-- contains
adequate portions of self-overlapping conformations as well as higher energy
ones. It is shown that the multi-self-overlap ensemble algorithm reproduce
correctly the canonical averages at finite temperatures of the HP model of
lattice proteins. Moreover, it outperforms massively a standard multicanonical
algorithm for a difficult example of a polymer with 8-stickers. Alternative

Launch Environment Water Flow Simulations Using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics
This paper describes the use of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) to simulate the water flow from the rainbird nozzle system used in the sound suppression system during pad abort and nominal launch. The simulations help determine if water from rainbird nozzles will impinge on the rocket nozzles and other sensitive ground support elements
An Indirect Defence Trait Mediated through Egg-Induced Maize Volatiles from Neighbouring Plants.
Attack of plants by herbivorous arthropods may result in considerable changes to the plant's chemical phenotype with respect to emission of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). These HIPVs have been shown to act as repellents to the attacking insects as well as attractants for the insects antagonistic to these herbivores. Plants can also respond to HIPV signals from other plants that warn them of impending attack. Recent investigations have shown that certain maize varieties are able to emit volatiles following stemborer egg deposition. These volatiles attract the herbivore's parasitoids and directly deter further oviposition. However, it was not known whether these oviposition-induced maize (Zea mays, L.) volatiles can mediate chemical phenotypic changes in neighbouring unattacked maize plants. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the effect of oviposition-induced maize volatiles on intact neighbouring maize plants in 'Nyamula', a landrace known to respond to oviposition, and a standard commercial hybrid, HB515, that did not. Headspace volatile samples were collected from maize plants exposed to Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) egg deposition and unoviposited neighbouring plants as well as from control plants kept away from the volatile emitting ones. Behavioural bioassays were carried out in a four-arm olfactometer using egg (Trichogramma bournieri Pintureau & Babault (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)) and larval (Cotesia sesamiae Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)) parasitoids. Coupled Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for volatile analysis. For the 'Nyamula' landrace, GC-MS analysis revealed HIPV production not only in the oviposited plants but also in neighbouring plants not exposed to insect eggs. Higher amounts of EAG-active biogenic volatiles such as (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene were emitted from these plants compared to control plants. Subsequent behavioural assays with female T. bournieri and C. sesamiae parasitic wasps indicated that these parasitoids preferred volatiles from oviposited and neighbouring landrace plants compared to those from the control plants. This effect was absent in the standard commercial hybrid we tested. There was no HIPV induction and no difference in parasitoid attraction in neighbouring and control hybrid maize plants. These results show plant-plant signalling: 'Nyamula' maize plants emitting oviposition-induced volatiles attractive to the herbivore's natural enemies can induce this indirect defence trait in conspecific neighbouring undamaged maize plants. Maize plants growing in a field may thus benefit from this indirect defence through airborne signalling which may enhance the fitness of the volatile-emitting plant by increasing predation pressure on herbivores
Stacking Entropy of Hard Sphere Crystals
Classical hard spheres crystallize at equilibrium at high enough density.
Crystals made up of stackings of 2-dimensional hexagonal close-packed layers
(e.g. fcc, hcp, etc.) differ in entropy by only about per sphere
(all configurations are degenerate in energy). To readily resolve and study
these small entropy differences, we have implemented two different
multicanonical Monte Carlo algorithms that allow direct equilibration between
crystals with different stacking sequences. Recent work had demonstrated that
the fcc stacking has higher entropy than the hcp stacking. We have studied
other stackings to demonstrate that the fcc stacking does indeed have the
highest entropy of ALL possible stackings. The entropic interactions we could
detect involve three, four and (although with less statistical certainty) five
consecutive layers of spheres. These interlayer entropic interactions fall off
in strength with increasing distance, as expected; this fall-off appears to be
much slower near the melting density than at the maximum (close-packing)
density. At maximum density the entropy difference between fcc and hcp
stackings is per sphere, which is roughly 30% higher
than the same quantity measured near the melting transition.Comment: 15 page
Lattice-switch Monte Carlo
We present a Monte Carlo method for the direct evaluation of the difference
between the free energies of two crystal structures. The method is built on a
lattice-switch transformation that maps a configuration of one structure onto a
candidate configuration of the other by `switching' one set of lattice vectors
for the other, while keeping the displacements with respect to the lattice
sites constant. The sampling of the displacement configurations is biased,
multicanonically, to favor paths leading to `gateway' arrangements for which
the Monte Carlo switch to the candidate configuration will be accepted. The
configurations of both structures can then be efficiently sampled in a single
process, and the difference between their free energies evaluated from their
measured probabilities. We explore and exploit the method in the context of
extensive studies of systems of hard spheres. We show that the efficiency of
the method is controlled by the extent to which the switch conserves correlated
microstructure. We also show how, microscopically, the procedure works: the
system finds gateway arrangements which fulfill the sampling bias
intelligently. We establish, with high precision, the differences between the
free energies of the two close packed structures (fcc and hcp) in both the

Free energies of crystalline solids: a lattice-switch Monte Carlo method
We present a method for the direct evaluation of the difference between the
free energies of two crystalline structures, of different symmetry. The method
rests on a Monte Carlo procedure which allows one to sample along a path,
through atomic-displacement-space, leading from one structure to the other by
way of an intervening transformation that switches one set of lattice vectors
for another. The configurations of both structures can thus be sampled within a
single Monte Carlo process, and the difference between their free energies
evaluated directly from the ratio of the measured probabilities of each. The
method is used to determine the difference between the free energies of the fcc
