The Battle of the Transductine Mountains: Troops, Logistics, Strategy, Development, Landscape and Climate

En este artículo ¿continuación del publicado en este mismo número de la revista¿ hemos evaluado si el espacio físico propuesto para la batalla de los montes Transductinos se ajusta a las descripciones de las fuentes primarias. Factores como el número de tropas y el paisaje, entre otros, han sido desarrollados en este estudio. Los nuevos datos nos han permitido plantear una nueva reconstrucción de la batalla y de las operaciones previas y posteriores. Los datos recopilados indican que la batalla tuvo lugar en un marco de crisis climática y social, algo que nos permite reinterpretar los testimonios recogidos en las crónicas históricas.[EN] In this article –that follows another one published in this same number of the journal– we have evaluated whether the physical space proposed for the battle of the Montes Transductinos, included in this volume, is consistent with the descriptions of the historical sources. Factors such as the number of troops and the landscape, among others, have been developed in this study. The new data allowed us to propose a new reconstruction of the battle, and also the previous and subsequent battle operations. The collected data indicate that the battle took place during a climate and social crisis, which allow us to reinterpret the testimonies of the historical chronicles

The Battle of the Transductine Mountains: Location and Reconstruction of the Battle Routes that Decided the Fate of the Visigothic Kingdom

La precisa ubicación geográfica de la batalla que dio inicio a la conquista musulmana del Reino visigodo ha sido una de las cuestiones más debatidas por la historiografía española. Estudios anteriores casi siempre optaron por un enfoque filológico. En este trabajo, sin dejar de lado cuestiones filológicas, hemos primado los testimonios geográficos, estratégicos y logísticos de fuentes primarias, confrontados con información actual sobre los ejércitos enfrentados y las vías de comunicación de la época. Presentamos aquí parcialmente nuestra hipótesis, que nos permite proponer que la batalla tuvo lugar entre la laguna de La Janda y el cerro de Torrejosa.[EN] The precise geographical location of the battle that initiated the Muslim conquest of the Visigothic Kingdom has been one of the most debated questions in Spanish historiography. Previous studies almost always opted for a philological approach. In this work, without leaving aside philological questions, we have given priority to geographical, strategic and logistical testimonies from primary sources, and compared with current information regarding the confronted armies and the communication routes of that period. Here we partially present our hypothesis, which allows us to propose that the battle took place between the Janda Lake and the hill of Torrejosa
