    Perception of motion direction in luminance-and contrast-defined reversed-phi motion sequences

    Nonlinear processing can be used to recover the motion of contrast modulations of binary noise patterns. A nonlinear stage has also been proposed to explain the perception of forward motion in motion sequences which typically elicit reversed-phi. We examined perceived direction of motion for stimuli in which these reversed motion sequences were used to modulate the contrast of binary noise patterns. A percept of forward motion could be elicted by both luminance-defined and contrast-defined stimuli. The perceived direction of motion seen in the contrast-defined stimuli showed a profound carrier dependency. The replacement of a static carrier by a dynamic carrier can reverse the perceived direction of motion. Forward motion was never seen with dynamic carriers. For luminance- and contrast-defined patterns the reversed motion percept increasingly dominated, with increases in the spatial frequency and temporal frequency of the modulation. Differences in the patterns of responses to the two stimuli over spatial and temporal frequency were abolished by the addition of noise to the luminance-defined stimulus. These data suggest the possibility that a single mechanism may mediate the perception of luminance- and contrast-defined motion

    Portion Size: What We Know and What We Need to Know

    There is increasing evidence that the portion sizes of many foods have increased and in a laboratory at least this increases the amount eaten. The conclusions are, however, limited by the complexity of the phenomenon. There is a need to consider meals freely chosen over a prolonged period when a range of foods of different energy densities are available. A range of factors will influence the size of the portion size chosen: amongst others packaging, labeling, advertising, and the unit size rather than portion size of the food item. The way portion size interacts with the multitude of factors that determine food intake needs to be established. In particular, the role of portion size on energy intake should be examined as many confounding variables exist and we must be clear that it is portion size that is the major problem. If the approach is to make a practical contribution, then methods of changing portion sizes will need to be developed. This may prove to be a problem in a free market, as it is to be expected that customers will resist the introduction of smaller portion sizes, given that value for money is an important motivator

    Test stimulus characteristics determine the perceived speed of the dynamic motion aftereffect

    AbstractUsing a speed-matching task, we measured the speed tuning of the dynamic motion aftereffect (MAE). The results of our first experiment, in which we co-varied dot speed in the adaptation and test stimuli, revealed a speed tuning function. We sought to tease apart what contribution, if any, the test stimulus makes towards the observed speed tuning. This was examined by independently manipulating dot speed in the adaptation and test stimuli, and measuring the effect this had on the perceived speed of the dynamic MAE. The results revealed that the speed tuning of the dynamic MAE is determined, not by the speed of the adaptation stimulus, but by the local motion characteristics of the dynamic test stimulus. The role of the test stimulus in determining the perceived speed of the dynamic MAE was confirmed by showing that, if one uses a test stimulus containing two sources of local speed information, observers report seeing a transparent MAE; this is despite the fact that adaptation is induced using a single-speed stimulus. Thus while the adaptation stimulus necessarily determines perceived direction of the dynamic MAE, its perceived speed is determined by the test stimulus. This dissociation of speed and direction supports the notion that the processing of these two visual attributes may be partially independent
