Measuring Employee Turnover in Australian Pig Production

Limited availability of competent and motivated staff has been repeatedly cited as one of the major constraints on pig production in Australia. Whilst a considerable effort is put into training staff (Western Australia boasts the most advanced training facility in South-East Asia), practically nothing is known about the rates of employee turnover. Based on a postal survey and case studies of high and low turnover piggeries, this paper provides the first objective measures of staff turnover in the pig industry and explores possible explanatory factors. Measurement of turnover can provide managers with a benchmark to assess their own performance. This study also revealed shortcomings in the standard Separation Method used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics when it is applied to relatively small businesses. Herbicide Resistance in Ryegrass: Stochastic Evaluation of Management Strategies

Annual Ryegrass is a significant weed in cereal production in Western Australia. Herbicide resistance is increasing and is a major concern to producers. Long-term, field scale trials are being conducted on a number of sites in the state. The apparent costs and benefits of different management strategies are dependent on seasonal conditions and markets for inputs and products. This paper presents the results of a simulation model of alternative strategies under a wide range of historic conditions. Farming in the "New Economy" : An Australian Perspective

Barriers to trade between countries have reduced through the general Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The nature of trade between businesses is also changing dramatically through developments in Information Technology but also due to adoption of quality assurance and new approaches to supply chain management. The impacts of this "New Economy" vary around the world. This paper considers the implications of these developments for Australian farmers. Whilst these changes can be regarded as generally advantageous to Australian farmers, they may be disadvantaged in some areas because of the relatively small size of the Australian farming sector, its geographical dispersion, the advent of a range of new technologies and the structure of agribusinesses. Interobserver variation of the histopathological diagnosis in clinical trials on glioma: a clinician’s perspective

Several studies have provided ample evidence of a clinically significant interobserver variation of the histological diagnosis of glioma. This interobserver variation has an effect on both the typing and grading of glial tumors. Since treatment decisions are based on histological diagnosis and grading, this affects patient care: erroneous classification and grading may result in both over- and undertreatment. In particular, the radiotherapy dosage and the use of chemotherapy are affected by tumor grade and lineage. It also affects the conduct and interpretation of clinical trials on glioma, in particular of studies into grade II and grade III gliomas. Although trials with central pathology review prior to inclusion will result in a more homogeneous patient population, the interpretation and external validity of such trials are still affected by this, and the question whether results of such trials can be generalized to patients diagnosed and treated elsewhere remains to be answered. Although molecular classification may help in typing and grading tumors, as of today this is still in its infancy and unlikely to completely replace histological classification. Routine pathology review in everyday clinical practice should be considered. More objective histological criteria for the grade and lineage of gliomas are urgently needed

The fallacy of the cognitive free fall in communication metaphor: A semiotic analysis

This paper is a theoretical analysis of the cognitive free-fall metaphor, used within the cognitive view, as a model for explaining the communication process between a generator and a receiver of a message. Its aim is to demonstrate that the idea of a cognitive free fall taking place within this communication process leads to apparent theoretical paradoxes, partly fostered by unclear definitions of key information-science concepts—namely, tokens, signs, information, and knowledge and their interrelatedness—and a naïve theoretical framework. The paper promotes a semiotically inspired model of communication that demonstrates that what takes place in communication is not a cognitive free fall, but rather a fall from a pragmatic level of knowing or knowledge to a level of representation or information. The paper further argues that the communication process more ideally can be expressed as a complex interrelation of emotion, information, and cognition
