    Correlates of Compulsive Buying

    Compulsive buying is a chronic issue for shoppers exacerbated by a nation obsessed with consumption. To predict compulsive buying behavior, a survey was administered to 283 college students in southern Nevada. The results suggested that the compulsive buyer exhibits am ex­ternal consumer locus of control and purchases goods with the intent to increase social status or quell anxiety. Given that responsible financial behavior changes as a function of age, college students are particularly vulnerable to compulsive purchasing behavior, as it is exacerbated by irresponsible credit spending behaviors

    A Proposal That the City Manager Form of Government be Adopted in Logan, Utah

    Logan, Utah has a number of organizational and procedural problems, as do many other American cities. This study was initiated with the hope that some system could be ascertained that would solve or alleviate most of these problems. The history and development of the City Manager Plan of Government was researched thoroughly and a number of cities with the plan in operation in whole, or in part, were studied. The conclusion was that Logan, Utah would substantially improve the efficiency of its operations as a whole if it adopted the City Manager Plan. This thesis is of the advocacy type, as the author was convinced early in the study that Logan could resolve many of its problems and gain stature among cities by assuming a more business-like stance in the business end of its operations

    Modern society is characterized by heightened complexity in the degree of interdependence among its members. As societies advance, courts are increasingly called upon to strike an appropriate balance among the interests of individuals, society, and government. This Comment addresses certain problems of constitutional jurisprudence that arise when courts attempt to strike that balance. Several cases interpreting the Fourteenth Amendment will be discussed. They present useful illustrations of the nature of conflicts that arise among societal actors.\u2

    Mercury accumulation in fishes from tropical aquatic ecosystems in the Niger Delta, Nigeria

    Fishes are important biomarkers of trace elements in aquatic ecosystems, and are used to evaluate the status of water pollution by mercury in tropical aquatic ecosystems in Nigeria. Common fishes, Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus,Brycinus nurse, Hemichromis fasciatus, Lutianus ava, Oreochromis nilotica, Pomadasys jubelini, Stellifer stellifer and Tilapia guineensis were analysed for Hg accumulation using the cold vapour atomic absorption spectrophotometry technique. The results showed that Hg concentration in P. jubelini was relatively the highest, with a mean concentration of 0.063 ± 0.03 mg kg–1. Other concentration values were 0.044 ± 0.031 mg kg–1 for O. nilotica, 0.026 ± 0.013 mg kg–1 for B. nurse, 0.034 ± 0.034 mg kg–1 for H. fasciatus, 0.023 ± 0.020 mg kg–1 for C. nigrodigitatus and 0.33 ± 0.016 mg kg–1 for L. ava. Concentrations of Hg accumulated by the fishes were low and within internationally accepted limit, not likely to cause mercury poisoning. Because of the high Hg accumulating potential of P. jubelini, it is recommended as a biomarker for assessment of Hg toxicity in a tropical aquatic environment

    Patchy He II reionization and the physical state of the IGM

    We present a Monte-Carlo model of He II reionization by QSOs and its effect on the thermal state of the clumpy intergalactic medium (IGM). The model assumes that patchy reionization develops as a result of the discrete distribution of QSOs. It includes various recipes for the propagation of the ionizing photons, and treats photo-heating self-consistently. The model provides the fraction of He III, the mean temperature in the IGM, and the He II mean optical depth -- all as a function of redshift. It also predicts the evolution of the local temperature versus density relation during reionization. Our findings are as follows: The fraction of He III increases gradually until it becomes close to unity at z∼2.8−3.0z\sim 2.8-3.0. The He II mean optical depth decreases from τ∼10\tau\sim 10 at z≥3.5z\geq 3.5 to τ≤0.5\tau\leq 0.5 at z≤2.5z\leq 2.5. The mean temperature rises gradually between z∼4z\sim 4 and z∼3z\sim 3 and declines slowly at lower redshifts. The model predicts a flattening of the temperature-density relation with significant increase in the scatter during reionization at z∼3z\sim 3. Towards the end of reionization the scatter is reduced and a tight relation is re-established. This scatter should be incorporated in the analysis of the Lyα\alpha forest at z≤3z\leq 3. Comparison with observational results of the optical depth and the mean temperature at moderate redshifts constrains several key physical parameters.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures; Changed content.     Arkansas Cotton Variety Test 1999

    The primary aim of the Arkansas Cotton Variety Test is to provide unbiased data regarding the agronomic performance of cotton varieties in the major cotton growing areas in Arkansas. This information helps seed dealers establish marketing strategies and assists producers in choosing varieties to plant. In this way the annual test facilitates the inclusion of new, improved genetic material into Arkansas cotton production. The 1999 test had 67 entries (including 25 transgenic genotypes and 35 first-year entries), which were evaluated at sixsites in eastern Arkansas. The presence of four transgenic and five first-year entries among the top 10 yielding entries suggests that improvement is being accomplished in varietal development. This report also includes the Mississippi County Variety Test (an on-farm evaluation of selected varieties) and on-farm variety trials conducted by the Cooperative Extension Service

    Specific case studies undertaken to demonstrate the usefulness of remote sensing technology to resource managers in California are highlighted. Applications discussed include the mapping and quantization of wildland fire fuels in Mendocino and Shasta Counties as well as in the Central Valley; the development of a digital spectral/terrain data set for Colusa County; the Forsythe Planning Experiment to maximize the usefulness of inputs from LANDSAT and geographic information systems to county planning in Mendocino County; the development of a digital data bank for Big Basin State Park in Santa Cruz County; the detection of salinity related cotton canopy reflectance differences in the Central Valley; and the surveying of avocado acreage and that of other fruits and nut crops in Southern California. Special studies include the interpretability of high altitude, large format photography of forested areas for coordinated resource planning using U-2 photographs of the NASA Bucks Lake Forestry test site in the Plumas National Forest in the Sierra Nevada Mountains
