    Perceptions of Student Involvement in the Construction of their own IEP\u27 s

    Based on the fact that students are often not included in the construction of their own Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives, the researcher developed the question; Are students more likely to achieve the criteria listed in their IEPs when they are involved in construction of their goals and objectives? The researcher distributed surveys to students, parents and teachers in order to draw conclusions regarding each group of participants\u27 perceptions on whether or not students should be involved in their own IEP meetings. After collecting and reviewing the data, the researcher concluded that both parents\u27 and teachers\u27 perceptions seemed to be focused on the age of students and if they are in fact ready to participate in the construction of their own goals and objectives. For the most part, students were in favor of being a part of their own IEP planning. This study is critical in the field of special education because it is important that students with disabilities are able to achieve their IEP goals and objectives

    Splenomesenteric vein: formally recognising a clinically relevant section of the portal venous drainage system

    Background and aims: The objective of this study was to identify and examine a common vein in the portal system that is not consistently named, and when named, to assess whether fundamental concepts were applied in the process of naming. Essentially, the portal venous system drains 3 regions of the gastrointestinal system into 3 major veins (superior mesenteric — SMV, splenic — SV, and inferior mesenteric — IMV) ultimately forming the portal vein (PV). TheSMV is formed from midgut veins generally representing the right side of the abdomen. The IMV is formed from hindgut veins generally representing the left side of the lower abdomen and pelvis, classically draining into the SV. The SV is formed from the foregut veins and generally accepts the IMV. The SV then joins the superior mesenteric vein to become the PV.Materials and methods: Sixty cadavers were dissected to observe the frequency of this morphology. Current anatomy and atlas texts were reviewed to identify the morphology and nomenclature.Results: Observations from this study identified a vein being formed from the convergence of the SV and IMV the author named “splenomesenteric vein”, which joins the superior mesenteric to form the PV.Conclusions: These findings suggest re-evaluating the morphology and nomenclature of this structure because of the pathology and clinical relevance of this area

    Up-Scaled Fish Barrier: Vertically Mounted Electrodes are Economical, Maintainable, Safe

    Our Great Lakes are under attack by the invasive Asian carp. If they were to establish themselves in the lakes, it would prove detrimental to the ecosystem, the multi-billion dollar fishing industry, and recreational lake use. They become harmful airborne projectiles when disturbed by watercraft and will starve out native species. My focus is on the $200 million barrier system put in place to stop the migration of these fish. Currently, these fish are being stopped by a massive horizontal electrode fish barrier system located in Romeoville, Illinois. My research was spurred by the amount of problems with the maintenance of the system. Using horizontal electrodes makes them susceptible to damage and debris, mostly from barge chains and silt. The current maintenance protocol is to poison the water, shut down the barrier, and send a diver into potentially electrified water. I decided to try to model mounting removable electrodes on the side wall to stop the damage. I hypothesized that this would produce the same gradient and stop the fish. I created a 2 percent scale model of both configurations and tested the gradient using a volt meter. My findings show that vertically mounted electrodes will produce the same fish-stopping gradient, and are easier to maintain, safer, and more economical

    Familial hemiplegic migraine with cerebellar ataxia and paroxysmal psychosis

    Familial hemiplegic migraine is a rare autosomal dominant disorder associated with stereotypic neurologic au ra phenomena including hemiparesis, So far two chromosomal loci have been identified. Families linked to the chromosome 19 locus display missense mutations within the CACNL1A4 gene. Here we report on a family with familial hemiplegic migraine and cerebellar ataxia with recurrent episodes of acute paranoid psychosis with anxiety and visual hallucinations associated with migraine attacks. Based on the clinical and haplotype evidence indicating linkage to chromosome 19 in this family, we hypothesize that a dysfunction of the mutated calcium channel may be involved not only in the development of hemiplegic migraine but also in the acute psychotic episodes observed in these patients
