The soils of the proposed Santo industrial forest plantation, Vanuatu (ODNRI Bulletin 25)
The soils of an area on the eastern side of the island of Espiritu Santo were assessed for suitability for the production of Cordia alliodora. The soils were strongly weathered and leached volcanic clays with properties influenced by an underlying coral shelf and a rejuvenating land surface. Soil depth and terrain constraints affect the most dissected parts of the area while chemical infertility occurs in the older soils. However throughout the greater part of the area potassium deficiency is the only likely constraint to Cordia growth
Quantum Communication Protocol Employing Weak Measurements
We propose a communication protocol exploiting correlations between two
events with a definite time-ordering: a) the outcome of a {\em weak
measurement} on a spin, and b) the outcome of a subsequent ordinary measurement
on the spin. In our protocol, Alice, first generates a "code" by performing
weak measurements on a sample of N spins.
The sample is sent to Bob, who later performs a post-selection by measuring
the spin along either of two certain directions. The results of the
post-selection define the "key', which he then broadcasts publicly. Using both
her previously generated code and this key, Alice is able to infer the {\em
direction} chosen by Bob in the post-selection. Alternatively, if Alice
broadcasts publicly her code, Bob is able to infer from the code and the key
the direction chosen by Alice for her weak measurement. Two possible
experimental realizations of the protocols are briefly mentioned.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex, 1 figure. A second protocol is added, where by a
similar set of weak measurement Alice can send, instead of receiving, a
message to Bob. The security question for the latter protocol is discusse
UK utility data integration: overcoming schematic heterogeneity
In this paper we discuss syntactic, semantic and schematic issues which inhibit the integration of utility data in the UK. We then focus on the techniques employed within the VISTA project to overcome schematic heterogeneity. A Global
Schema based architecture is employed. Although automated approaches to Global Schema definition were attempted
the heterogeneities of the sector were too great. A manual approach to Global Schema definition was employed. The
techniques used to define and subsequently map source utility data models to this schema are discussed in detail. In order to ensure a coherent integrated model, sub and cross domain validation issues are then highlighted. Finally the proposed framework and data flow for schematic integration is introduced
Faithful remote state preparation using finite classical bits and a non-maximally entangled state
We present many ensembles of states that can be remotely prepared by using
minimum classical bits from Alice to Bob and their previously shared entangled
state and prove that we have found all the ensembles in two-dimensional case.
Furthermore we show that any pure quantum state can be remotely and faithfully
prepared by using finite classical bits from Alice to Bob and their previously
shared nonmaximally entangled state though no faithful quantum teleportation
protocols can be achieved by using a nonmaximally entangled state.Comment: 6 page
Protocols for entanglement transformations of bipartite pure states
We present a general theoretical framework for both deterministic and
probabilistic entanglement transformations of bipartite pure states achieved
via local operations and classical communication. This framework unifies and
greatly simplifies previous works. A necessary condition for ``pure
contraction'' transformations is given. Finally, constructive protocols to
achieve both probabilistic and deterministic entanglement transformations are
presented.Comment: 7 pages, no figures. Version slightly modified on Physical Review A

Targeted free energy perturbation
A generalization of the free energy perturbation identity is derived, and a
computational strategy based on this result is presented. A simple example
illustrates the efficiency gains that can be achieved with this method.Comment: 8 pages + 1 color figur
Quantum and Classical Noise in Practical Quantum Cryptography Systems based on polarization-entangled photons
Quantum-cryptography key distribution (QCKD) experiments have been recently
reported using polarization-entangled photons. However, in any practical
realization, quantum systems suffer from either unwanted or induced
interactions with the environment and the quantum measurement system, showing
up as quantum and, ultimately, statistical noise. In this paper, we investigate
how ideal polarization entanglement in spontaneous parametric downconversion
(SPDC) suffers quantum noise in its practical implementation as a secure
quantum system, yielding errors in the transmitted bit sequence. Because all
SPDC-based QCKD schemes rely on the measurement of coincidence to assert the
bit transmission between the two parties, we bundle up the overall quantum and
statistical noise in an exhaustive model to calculate the accidental
coincidences. This model predicts the quantum-bit error rate and the sifted key
and allows comparisons between different security criteria of the hitherto
proposed QCKD protocols, resulting in an objective assessment of performances
and advantages of different systems.Comment: Rev Tex Style, 2 columns, 7 figures, (a modified version will appear

GlnK Facilitates the Dynamic Regulation of Bacterial Nitrogen Assimilation
Ammonium assimilation in Escherichia coli is regulated by two paralogous proteins (GlnB and GlnK), which orchestrate interactions with regulators of gene expression, transport proteins, and metabolic pathways. Yet how they conjointly modulate the activity of glutamine synthetase, the key enzyme for nitrogen assimilation, is poorly understood. We combine experiments and theory to study the dynamic roles of GlnB and GlnK during nitrogen starvation and upshift. We measure time-resolved in vivo concentrations of metabolites, total and posttranslationally modified proteins, and develop a concise biochemical model of GlnB and GlnK that incorporates competition for active and allosteric sites, as well as functional sequestration of GlnK. The model predicts the responses of glutamine synthetase, GlnB, and GlnK under time-varying external ammonium level in the wild-type and two genetic knock-outs. Our results show that GlnK is tightly regulated under nitrogen-rich conditions, yet it is expressed during ammonium run-out and starvation. This suggests a role for GlnK as a buffer of nitrogen shock after starvation, and provides a further functional link between nitrogen and carbon metabolisms
The Possibilist Transactional Interpretation and Relativity
A recent ontological variant of Cramer's Transactional Interpretation, called
"Possibilist Transactional Interpretation" or PTI, is extended to the
relativistic domain. The present interpretation clarifies the concept of
'absorption,' which plays a crucial role in TI (and in PTI). In particular, in
the relativistic domain, coupling amplitudes between fields are interpreted as
amplitudes for the generation of confirmation waves (CW) by a potential
absorber in response to offer waves (OW), whereas in the nonrelativistic
context CW are taken as generated with certainty. It is pointed out that
solving the measurement problem requires venturing into the relativistic domain
in which emissions and absorptions take place; nonrelativistic quantum
mechanics only applies to quanta considered as 'already in existence' (i.e.,
'free quanta'), and therefore cannot fully account for the phenomenon of
measurement, in which quanta are tied to sources and sinks.Comment: Final version with some minor corrections as published in Foundations
of Physics. This paper has significant overlap with Chapter 6 of my book on
the Transactional Interpretation, forthcoming from Cambridge University

Phantom Field with O(N) Symmetry in Exponential Potential
In this paper, we study the phase space of phantom model with O(\emph{N})
symmetry in exponential potential. Different from the model without O(\emph{N})
symmetry, the introduction of the symmetry leads to a lower bound on the
equation of state for the existence of stable phantom dominated attractor
phase. The reconstruction relation between the potential of O(\textit{N})
phantom system and red shift has been derived.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, replaced with the version to appear on Phys. Rev.
