Entangled photon pairs produced by a quantum dot strongly coupled to a microcavity

We show theoretically that entangled photon pairs can be produced on demand through the biexciton decay of a quantum dot strongly coupled to the modes of a photonic crystal. The strong coupling allows to tune the energy of the mixed exciton-photon (polariton) eigenmodes, and to overcome the natural splitting existing between the exciton states coupled with different linear polarizations of light. Polariton states are moreover well protected against dephasing due to their lifetime ten to hundred times shorter than that of a bare exciton. Our analysis shows that the scheme proposed can be achievable with the present technology

Using of small-scale quantum computers in cryptography with many-qubit entangled states

We propose a new cryptographic protocol. It is suggested to encode information in ordinary binary form into many-qubit entangled states with the help of a quantum computer. A state of qubits (realized, e.g., with photons) is transmitted through a quantum channel to the addressee, who applies a quantum computer tuned to realize the inverse unitary transformation decoding of the message. Different ways of eavesdropping are considered, and an estimate of the time needed for determining the secret unitary transformation is given. It is shown that using even small quantum computers can serve as a basis for very efficient cryptographic protocols. For a suggested cryptographic protocol, the time scale on which communication can be considered secure is exponential in the number of qubits in the entangled states and in the number of gates used to construct the quantum network

Massive creation of entangled exciton states in semiconductor quantum dots

An intense laser pulse propagating in a medium of inhomogeneously broadened quantum dots massively creates entangled exciton states. After passage of the pulse all single-exciton states remain unpopulated (self-induced transparency) whereas biexciton coherence (exciton entanglement) is generated through two-photon transitions. We propose several experimental techniques for the observation of such unexpected behavior

    Third quantization of f(R)f(R)-type gravity

We examine the third quantization of f(R)f(R)-type gravity, based on its effective Lagrangian in the case of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric. Starting from the effective Lagrangian, we execute a suitable change of variable and the second quantization, and we obtain the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. The third quantization of this theory is considered. And the uncertainty relation of the universe is investigated in the example of f(R)f(R)-type gravity, where f(R)=R2f(R)=R^2. It is shown, when the time is late namely the scale factor of the universe is large, the spacetime does not contradict to become classical, and, when the time is early namely the scale factor of the universe is small, the quantum effects are dominating.Comment: 9 pages, Arbitrary constants in (4.19) are changed to arbitrary functions of φ\varphi. Neutrinos in a spherical box

In the present paper we study some neutrino properties as they may appear in the low energy neutrinos emitted in triton decay with maximum neutrino energy of 18.6 keV. The technical challenges to this end can be achieved by building a very large TPC capable of detecting low energy recoils, down to a a few tenths of a keV, within the required low background constraints. More specifically We propose the development of a spherical gaseous TPC of about 10-m in radius and a 200 Mcurie triton source in the center of curvature. One can list a number of exciting studies, concerning fundamental physics issues, that could be made using a large volume TPC and low energy antineutrinos: 1) The oscillation length involving the small angle of the neutrino mixing matrix, directly measured in this disappearance experiment, is fully contained inside the detector. Measuring the counting rate of neutrino-electron elastic scattering as a function of the distance of the source will give a precise and unambiguous measurement of the oscillation parameters free of systematic errors. In fact first estimates show that even with a year's data taking a sensitivity of a few percent for the measurement of the above angle will be achieved. 2) The low energy detection threshold offers a unique sensitivity for the neutrino magnetic moment which is about two orders of magnitude beyond the current experimental limit. 3) Scattering at such low neutrino energies has never been studied and any departure from the expected behavior may be an indication of new physics beyond the standard model. In this work we mainly focus on the various theoretical issues involved including a precise determination of the Weinberg angle at very low momentum transfer.Comment: 16 Pages, LaTex, 7 figures, talk given at NANP 2003, Dubna, Russia, June 23, 200

Resource characteristics and stock assessment of lesser sardines in the Indian waters

    Get PDF
The fishery and biology of commercially important species of lesser sardine resources of India were studied. Detailed gearwise, specieswise and monthwise landings for 1984-88 are presented .In Goa-Karnataka region the main gear was purse seine, whereas in the Keralaregion it was gill net. On the east coast, Tamil Nadu- Pondicheny recorded maximum landings through gill nets and Andhra-Orissa through boat seines and gill nets. Surdinellu gibbosa was the imponant species in the west and southeast coasts of India, and S.,fimbriutuin the northeast region. Growth panmeters for different species were estimated. Stock assessment for S. gibbosu showed that the fish is optimally exploited in the Tamil Nadu-Pondicheny region, whereas in the west coast (Kerala and Goa-Kmataka regions) the fishery can be improved with additional effon. In the Andhra-Orissa region. the effon is beyond the MSY level

Observation of Fluctuation-Dissipation-Theorem Violations in a Structural Glass

The fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT), connecting dielectric susceptibility and polarization noise was studied in glycerol below its glass transition temperature Tg. Weak FDT violations were observed after a quench from just above to just below Tg, for frequencies above the alpha peak. Violations persisted up to 10^5 times the thermal equilibration time of the configurational degrees of freedom under study, but comparable to the average relaxation time of the material. These results suggest that excess energy flows from slower to faster relaxing modes.Comment: Improved discussion; final version to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett. 4 pages, 5 PS figures, RevTe

A note on the occurrence of large scale fish mortality along the Chaliyar River near Beypore

    Get PDF
An unusual phenomenon of large scale fish mortality was noticed at Chaliyar river in Beypore on the morning of 3rd May 1966. The fishermen noticed hundreds of fish struggling and coming up on the surface of water in a dazed and dead condition and showing signs of suffocation. They caught the dead and dying fish and sold them immediately in the market. No adverse effect as a result of eating these fish was noticed

Determination of the exponent gamma for SAWs on the two-dimensional Manhattan lattice

We present a high-statistics Monte Carlo determination of the exponent gamma for self-avoiding walks on a Manhattan lattice in two dimensions. A conservative estimate is \gamma \gtapprox 1.3425(3), in agreement with the universal value 43/32 on regular lattices, but in conflict with predictions from conformal field theory and with a recent estimate from exact enumerations. We find strong corrections to scaling that seem to indicate the presence of a non-analytic exponent Delta < 1. If we assume Delta = 11/16 we find gamma = 1.3436(3), where the error is purely statistical.Comment: 24 pages, LaTeX2e, 4 figure
