When one examines the relationship between poetry and prose in La Fontaine’s Psyche, three questions arise:1. Psyche is what is called in the 17th century a “mythological idyll”, i.e. a love-story that belongs to ancient mythology. This genre is supposed to be in verse. Why then choose to tell Psyche mainly in prose? Because La Fontaine wanted Psyche to be a long, ambitious piece of work and yet he thought, like many of his contemporaries, that “French verse is boring in the long run”.2. Once he had chosen prose, why then decide to “insert verse in many places”? He picked out the subject matter of Psyche because it enabled him to use various stylistic colours in the same story, but he wanted to achieve that effect “without the beauties of so many objects mixing up”. The switch from prose to poetry is one of the means the author used to differentiate between the various tones of his work.3. However, with such a stylistic choice, La Fontaine ran against the rule of stylistic uniformity that is so important according to French Classical aesthetics. How could he reconcile uniformity and diversity? In order to achieve that, he created a poetics based on the originally musical notion of temperament that consists in playing with the intensity of the stylistic colour, with its length, in providing transitions between the colours, eventually in justifying them through both internal and external verisimilitude

Mechanical behaviour of iron oxide scale: Experimental and numerical study

2nd International Conference on Tribology in Manufacturing Processes (ICTMP2004), Nyborg, Denmark, June 15-18, 2004International audienceThe paper addresses the identification of constitutive parameters of thick, brittle layers on metal substrates. Application is to the iron oxide behaviour during hot rolling processes of steel, where oxide scale breaking and embedding is one of the major causes of surface defects. Contact management of a FEM software has been adapted in order to address the transitions corresponding to transverse oxide fracture, along with two other mechanisms, namely delamination and interfacial stick/slip. It is applied to the hot strip rolling process to show pre-bite cracking and its consequences ("micro-extrusion" of the metal). To approximate the stress state prevailing at roll bite entry, the Four-Point Hot Bending Test (4PHBT) has been selected for the measurement of oxide properties. Oxidation is made in situ in the test rig under conditions similar to a hot strip mill (HSM) environment. Comparison of load-deflection curves for oxidized and non-oxidized samples allows the mechanical properties of the oxide to be determined. Above a critical temperature T-c - around 700 degrees C, but depending on strain rate - the oxide is ductile (with a very narrow plastic strain range, epsilon(p) < 10(-2)) and elastic-viscoplastic (EVP) constitutive parameters are identified numerically. Below T-c, brittleness is manifested by an array of transverse, through-thickness cracks. Acoustic emission (AE) has been used to help detect the onset of fracture, while numerical simulation gives the critical fracture stress at the corresponding point of the load-deflection curve. Results for four low carbon steel grades are compared

Toward a Framework Understanding of Online Programs for Countering Violent Extremism

There is an emerging consensus that ideologically-based narratives play a central role in encouraging and sustaining radicalization to violence, and that preventing, arresting, or reversing radicalization requires some means by which to address the effects of these narratives. Countering violent extremism (CVE) is a broad umbrella phrase that covers a wide array of approaches that have been advanced to reduce the radicalizing effects of extremist narratives. There is considerably less agreement, however, regarding the most appropriate means by which the mitigation of extremist narratives might best be accomplished. An important emerging area of interest is the role of the Internet, both as a forum through which narratives are transmitted and as an avenue for delivering CVE programs. At present, very little is known about which principles and practices should inform online CVE initiatives. This study attempts to establish a foundation and framework for these programs: first, by identifying the concepts and constructs which may be most relevant to countering violent extremism online, and second, by examining the available material from six online CVE programs in relation to these concepts. This examination suggests that these programs are lacking strong theoretical foundations and do not address important elements of radicalization, such as contextual factors or identity issues. It is important that future iterations of CVE programs consider not just the specific content of the narratives, but also take into account why these narratives have resonance for particular individuals. Author’s Note: The authors wish to thank Public Safety Canada for their generous support of the research on which this article is based. The Impact of Aging on Adipose Function and Adipokine Synthesis

During the last 40 years, there has been a world-wide increase in both the prevalence of obesity and an increase in the number of persons over the age of 60 due to a decline in deaths from infectious disease and the nutrition transition in low and middle income nations. While the increase in the elderly population indicates improvements in global public health, this population may experience a diminished quality of life due to the negative impacts of obesity on age-associated inflammation. Aging alters adipose tissue composition and function resulting in insulin resistance and ectopic lipid storage. A reduction in brown adipose tissue activity, declining sex hormones levels, and abdominal adipose tissue expansion occur with advancing years through the redistribution of lipids from the subcutaneous to the visceral fat compartment. These changes in adipose tissue function and distribution influence the secretion of adipose tissue derived hormones, or adipokines, that promote a chronic state of low-grade systemic inflammation. Ultimately, obesity accelerates aging by enhancing inflammation and increasing the risk of age-associated diseases. The focus of this review is the impact of aging on adipose tissue distribution and function and how these effects influence the elaboration of pro and anti-inflammatory adipokines

Analysis and optimization of light outcoupling in OLEDs with external hierarchical textures

    Get PDF
Hierarchical textures (combining 2D periodic large and small micro textures) as an external outcoupling solution for OLEDs have been researched, both experimentally and by optical simulations. For the case of a red bottom emitting OLED, different hierarchical textures were fabricated using laser-based methods and a replication step and applied to the OLED substrate, resulting in an increased light outcoupling. Laboratory-size OLED devices with applied textured foils show a smaller increase in efficiency compared to the final large area devices. The results show that the full exploitation of textured foils in laboratory-size samples is mainly limited by the lateral size of the thin film stack area and by limited light collection area of the measuring equipment. Modeling and simulations are used to further evaluate the full prospective of hierarchical textures in large area OLED devices. Optimization of hierarchical textures is done by simultaneously changing the aspect ratios of the small and large textures and a potential of 57% improvement in EQE compared to devices without applied textures is predicted by simulations. Optimized hierarchical textures show similar outcoupling efficiencies compared to optimized single textures, while on the other hand hierarchical textures require less pronounced features, lower aspect ratios, compared to single textures to achieve the same efficiencies. Hierarchical textures also help in eliminating flat parts that limit outcoupling efficiency. Finally, the limiting factors that prevent higher outcoupling are addressed. We show that the dominant factor is non-ideal reflection from the organic thin film stack due to parasitic absorption. In addition, possible ways to further increase the outcoupling from a thick substrate are indicated.Fil: Kovacic, Milan. University of Ljubljana; EsloveniaFil: Samigullina, Dinara. Design for Additive Manufacturing : Supporting Intrinsic-Motivated Creativity

    Get PDF
Emotional aspects and designers’ motivations in Design For Additive Manufacturing are rarely studied. Still, as they can influence creative behaviors, it is worth of interest to draw some bases for a relation between designers’ motivations and the field of Additive Manufacturing. This paper aims at identifying the motivations that push designers to deal with AM in their practice. We have highlighted that they experience some extrinsic motivations: technical improvements, economics and social environments pressures. We also notice that creative designers, apart from AM, usually experience some intrinsic motivations and, moreover, that it exists an ideal state to generate creative concepts: the Flow. To support creative designers in DFAM in reaching the Flow, we then identified 4 key levers through the potential of AM: the newness of AM processes, the needed skill of 3D modelling, the investigation of new shape grammars and finally the opportunity of embodying concepts into physical objects. To benefit from this potential, we assume that designers’ intrinsic motivations should be supported: we identified three required conditions. The first one is the use of a proper vocabulary i.e the expression Additive Manufacturing instead of 3D Printing. The second one is the development of a design process which integrates a creative approach. The third condition is the use of AM objects as experience triggers during creative sessions to arise positive emotions
