    Reprocessing of Soft X-ray Emission Lines in Black Hole Accretion Disks

    By means of a Monte Carlo code that accounts for Compton scattering and photoabsorption followed by recombination, we have investigated the radiation transfer of Ly alpha, He alpha, and recombination continua photons of H- and He-like C, N, O, and Ne produced in the photoionized atmosphere of a relativistic black hole accretion disk. We find that photoelectric opacity causes significant attenuation of photons with energies above the O VIII K-edge; that the conversion efficiencies of these photons into lower-energy lines and recombination continua are high; and that accounting for this reprocessing significantly (by factors of 21% to 105%) increases the flux of the Ly alpha and He alpha emission lines of H- and He-like C and O escaping the disk atmosphere.Comment: 4 pages including 4 encapsulated postscript figures; LaTeX format, uses aastex.cls and emulateapj5.sty; accepted on 2004 January 13 for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Overcoming exponential volume scaling in quantum simulations of lattice gauge theories

    Real-time evolution of quantum field theories using classical computers requires resources that scale exponentially with the number of lattice sites. Because of a fundamentally different computational strategy, quantum computers can in principle be used to perform detailed studies of these dynamics from first principles. Before performing such calculations, it is important to ensure that the quantum algorithms used do not have a cost that scales exponentially with the volume. In these proceedings, we present an interesting test case: a formulation of a compact U(1) gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions free of gauge redundancies. A naive implementation onto a quantum circuit has a gate count that scales exponentially with the volume. We discuss how to break this exponential scaling by performing an operator redefinition that reduces the non-locality of the Hamiltonian.     Characterizing the Oldenburg ‘Butter Shale’ from the Upper Ordovician (Katian) Waynesville Formation along the Cincinnati Arch, USA

    The Upper Ordovician (Katian) strata of the Cincinnati Arch contain numerous mudstone units known locally as ‘butter shales’ or ‘trilobite shales’. Most of these deposits are heavily collected for their excellently-preserved trilobites. The Oldenburg Butter Shale, however, is a previously-undescribed mudstone package from the Waynesville Formation, known only from limited exposure near Oldenburg, Indiana. The Oldenburg Shale is a 2 m-thick mudstone package with minor beds of shelly packstones, and calcisiltite-filled gutter casts. It contains abundant articulated trilobites. The mudstone portion contains illite, chlorite, quartz, calcite and traces of dolomite and pyrite. In outcrop, the shale exhibits no obvious bedding and breaks conchoidally. When cut and polished, the mudstone shows a mottled fabric, containing Lingulichnus and Chondrites trace fossils. The shelly units contain brachiopods, gastropods, and bryozoans. The gutter casts are 20 – 30 cm wide, display hummocky stratification, and contain Lingulichnus. Faunally, the Oldenburg is very unlike surrounding Waynesville strata. Instead of being dominated by brachiopods as is typical, the Oldenburg fauna consists of abundant bivalves (Modiolopsis, Ambonychia, and Caritodens), lingulid brachiopods, and the trilobites (Isotelus, and Flexicalymene, and rare Amphilichas in the upper 30 cm). Articulate brachiopods are represented in the shale to a limited extent by the genera Zygospira and Platystrophia. The shale also contains bryozoans, orthoconic cephalopods, rare crinoids and conulariids. Conodonts and scolecodonts are a major component of the microfauna. Taphonomy of the fossils, together with sedimentological features, indicates that this butter shale accumulated rapidly as a series of episodes of distal storm-generated mud and silt flows. Towards the top of the mudstone is a horizon of small concretions, about 7 cm wide. Overlying the butter shale is the pyrite crusted surface of the Mid-Richmondian Unconformity which removes the Oldenburg shale in most other locations. The concretions present at the top of the shale are the likely product of the prolonged sediment starvation accompanying this unconformity

    Xrn1/Pacman affects apoptosis and regulates expression of hid and reaper

    Programmed cell death, or apoptosis, is a highly conserved cellular process that is crucial for tissue homeostasis under normal development as well as environmental stress. Misregulation of apoptosis is linked to many developmental defects and diseases such as tumour formation, autoimmune diseases and neurological disorders. In this paper, we show a novel role for the exoribonuclease Pacman/Xrn1 in regulating apoptosis. Using Drosophila wing imaginal discs as a model system, we demonstrate that a null mutation in pacman results in small imaginal discs as well as lethality during pupation. Mutant wing discs show an increase in the number of cells undergoing apoptosis, especially in the wing pouch area. Compensatory proliferation also occurs in these mutant discs, but this is insufficient to compensate for the concurrent increase in apoptosis. The phenotypic effects of the pacman null mutation are rescued by a deletion that removes one copy of each of the pro-apoptotic genes reaper, hid and grim, demonstrating that pacman acts through this pathway. The null pacman mutation also results in a significant increase in the expression of the pro-apoptotic mRNAs, hid and reaper, with this increase mostly occurring at the post-transcriptional level, suggesting that Pacman normally targets these mRNAs for degradation. Our results uncover a novel function for the conserved exoribonuclease Pacman and suggest that this exoribonuclease is important in the regulation of apoptosis in other organisms

    Update on the current status of onchocerciasis in Cote d’Ivoire following 40 years of intervention: Progress and challenges

    Background Onchocerciasis control in Côte d’Ivoire started with aerial insecticide spraying in 1974 and continued with community directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTi) from 1992 to the present. Onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis (LF) are co-endemic in 46 of the 81 health districts in the country. Fourteen and 12 districts are endemic for only LF or onchocerciasis, respectively. This paper aims to review the impact of past interventions on onchocerciasis in Côte d’Ivoire between 1975 and 2013, and review plans for disease elimination. Methods We reviewed microfilaria (MF, skin snip) prevalence and community microfilarial load (CMFL) data from published reports from 53 health districts during two major epidemiological assessment periods. Data from 1975 through 1991 provided information on the impact of vector control, and data from 1992 through 2016 provided information on the impact of CDTi. Results Weekly aerial insecticide spraying in 8 endemic districts between 1975 and 1991 reduced the overall MF prevalence by 68.1% from 43.5% to 13.9%. The CMFL also decreased in 7 out of 8 surveyed communities by 95.2% from 9.24 MF/snip to 0.44 MF/snip. Ivermectin distribution started in 1992. The coverage targets for control (65% of the total population) was reached in most endemic districts, and some areas achieved 80% coverage. Two sets of surveys were conducted to assess the impact of CDTi. Results from the first repeat surveys showed a significant decrease in overall MF prevalence (by 75.7%, from 41.6% to 10.1%). The second follow-up evaluation showed further improvement in most endemic districts and also documented major reductions in CMFL compared to baseline. Conclusions Extensive data collected over many years document the very significant impact of interventions conducted by the National Onchocerciasis and other Eyes Diseases Control Programme during challenging times with periods of civil unrest. The Health Ministry has now integrated efforts to control neglected tropical diseases and adopted the goal of onchocerciasis elimination

    Pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of a single co-administered dose of diethylcarbamazine, albendazole and ivermectin in adults with and without Wuchereria bancrofti infection in Cote d\u27Ivoire

    BackgroundA single co-administered dose of ivermectin (IVM) plus diethylcarbamazine (DEC) plus albendazole (ALB), or triple-drug therapy, was recently found to be more effective for clearing microfilariae (Mf) than standard DEC plus ALB currently used for mass drug administration programs for lymphatic filariasis (LF) outside of sub-Saharan Africa. Triple-drug therapy has not been previously tested in LF-uninfected individuals from Africa. This study evaluated the pharmacokinetics (PK), safety, and efficacy of triple-drug therapy in people with and without Wuchereria bancrofti infection in West Africa.MethodsIn this open-label cohort study, treatment-naïve microfilaremic (>50 mf/mL, n = 32) and uninfected (circulating filarial antigen negative, n = 24) adults residing in Agboville district, Côte d’Ivoire, were treated with a single dose of IVM plus DEC plus ALB, and evaluated for adverse events (AEs) until 7 days post treatment. Drug levels were assessed by liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Persons responsible for assessing AEs were blinded to participants’ infection status.FindingsThere was no difference in AUC0-inf or Cmax between LF-infected and uninfected participants (P>0.05 for all comparisons). All subjects experienced mild AEs; 28% and 25% of infected and uninfected participants experienced grade 2 AEs, respectively. There were no severe or serious adverse events. Only fever (16 of 32 versus 4 of 24, PConclusionsModerate to heavy W. bancrofti infection did not affect PK parameters for IVM, DEC or ALB following a single co-administered dose of these drugs compared to uninfected individuals. The drugs were well tolerated. This study confirmed the efficacy of the triple-drug therapy for clearing W. bancrofti Mf and has added important information to support the use of this regimen in LF elimination programs in areas of Africa without co-endemic onchocerciasis or loiasis.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT02845713.</div
