On theories of random variables

We study theories of spaces of random variables: first, we consider random variables with values in the interval $[0,1]$, then with values in an arbitrary metric structure, generalising Keisler's randomisation of classical structures. We prove preservation and non-preservation results for model theoretic properties under this construction: i) The randomisation of a stable structure is stable. ii) The randomisation of a simple unstable structure is not simple. We also prove that in the randomised structure, every type is a Lascar type

FARM PRICE ESTIMATION WHEN THERE IS BARGAINING: THE CASE OF PROCESSED FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

Raw product prices for many processed fruits and vegetables are determined in part as an outcome of negotiations between processors and farmer bargaining associations. In such cases, unique market equilibrium solutions may not exist. This study develops a framework for price prediction under bargaining and applies it to the California cling peach industry. The price prediction equation turns out to involve the same variables as would a model specified for perfect competition. The Face of Urban Poverty Explaining the Prevalence of Slums in Developing Countries

One of the most visible and enduring manifestations of urban poverty in developing countries is the formation and proliferation of slums. While attention has focused on the rapid pace of urbanization as the sole or major factor explaining the proliferation of slums and squatter settlements in developing countries, there are other factors whose impacts are not known with much degree of certainty. It is also not clear how the effects of these factors vary across regions of the developing world. This paper accounts for differences in the prevalence of slums among developing countries using data drawn from the recent global assessment of slums undertaken by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. The empirical analysis identifies substantial inter-country variations in the incidence of slums both within and across the regions of Africa, Asia as well as, Latin America and the Caribbean.
