    Situations in traffic - how quickly they change

    Spatio-temporal correlations of intensity of traffic are analysed for one week data collected in the motorway M-30 around Madrid in January 2009. We found that the lifetime of these correlations is the shortest in the evening, between 6 and 8 p.m. This lifetime is a new indicator how much attention of drivers is demanded in given traffic conditions.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Are Computers Good for Children? The Effects of Home Computers on Educational Outcomes

    Although computers are universal in the classroom, nearly twenty million children in the United States do not have computers in their homes. Surprisingly, only a few previous studies explore the role of home computers in the educational process. Home computers might be very useful for completing school assignments, but they might also represent a distraction for teenagers. We use several identification strategies and panel data from the two main U.S. datasets that include recent information on computer ownership among children -- the 2000-2003 CPS Computer and Internet Use Supplements (CIUS) matched to the CPS Basic Monthly Files and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 -- to explore the causal relationship between computer ownership and high school graduation and other educational outcomes. Teenagers who have access to home computers are 6 to 8 percentage points more likely to graduate from high school than teenagers who do not have home computers after controlling for individual, parental, and family characteristics. We generally find evidence of positive relationships between home computers and educational outcomes using several identification strategies, including controlling for typically unobservable home environment and extracurricular activities in the NLSY97, fixed effects models, instrumental variables, and including future computer ownership and falsification tests.     Strongly quadrature-dependent noise in superconducting micro-resonators measured at the vacuum-noise limit

    We measure frequency- and dissipation-quadrature noise in superconducting lithographed microwave resonators with sensitivity near the vacuum noise level using a Josephson parametric amplifier. At an excitation power of 100~nW, these resonators show significant frequency noise caused by two-level systems. No excess dissipation-quadrature noise (above the vacuum noise) is observed to our measurement sensitivity. These measurements demonstrate that the excess dissipation-quadrature noise is negligible compared to vacuum fluctuations, at typical readout powers used in micro-resonator applications. Our results have important implications for resonant readout of various devices such as detectors, qubits and nano-mechanical oscillators.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    A fast implicit X-ray diffusive-dark-field retrieval method using a single mask and exposure

    Complementary to conventional and phase X-ray radiography, dark-field imaging has become central in visualizing diffusive scattering signal due to the spatially-unresolved texture within an object. To date most diffusive-dark-field retrieval methods require either the acquisition of multiple images at the cost of higher radiation dose or significant amounts of computational memory and time. In this work, a simple method of X-ray diffusive dark-field retrieval is presented, applicable to any single-mask imaging setup, with only one exposure of the sample. The approach, which is based on a model of geometric and diffusive reverse-flow conservation, is implicit and non-iterative. This numerically fast methodology is applied to experimental X-ray images acquired using both a random mask and a grid mask, giving high quality reconstructions that are very stable in the presence of noise. The method should be useful for high-speed imaging and/or imaging with low-flux sources
