Magnetic Flux of EUV Arcade and Dimming Regions as a Relevant Parameter for Early Diagnostics of Solar Eruptions - Sources of Non-Recurrent Geomagnetic Storms and Forbush Decreases
This study aims at the early diagnostics of geoeffectiveness of coronal mass
ejections (CMEs) from quantitative parameters of the accompanying EUV dimming
and arcade events. We study events of the 23th solar cycle, in which major
non-recurrent geomagnetic storms (GMS) with Dst <-100 nT are sufficiently
reliably identified with their solar sources in the central part of the disk.
Using the SOHO/EIT 195 A images and MDI magnetograms, we select significant
dimming and arcade areas and calculate summarized unsigned magnetic fluxes in
these regions at the photospheric level. The high relevance of this eruption
parameter is displayed by its pronounced correlation with the Forbush decrease
(FD) magnitude, which, unlike GMSs, does not depend on the sign of the Bz
component but is determined by global characteristics of ICMEs. Correlations
with the same magnetic flux in the solar source region are found for the GMS
intensity (at the first step, without taking into account factors determining
the Bz component near the Earth), as well as for the temporal intervals between
the solar eruptions and the GMS onset and peak times. The larger the magnetic
flux, the stronger the FD and GMS intensities are and the shorter the ICME
transit time is. The revealed correlations indicate that the main quantitative
characteristics of major non-recurrent space weather disturbances are largely
determined by measurable parameters of solar eruptions, in particular, by the
magnetic flux in dimming areas and arcades, and can be tentatively estimated in
advance with a lead time from 1 to 4 days. For GMS intensity, the revealed
dependencies allow one to estimate a possible value, which can be expected if
the Bz component is negative.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures. Accepted for publication in Solar Physic
An algorithm for measuring wind speed based on sampling aerosol inhomogeneities
A digital image processing algorithm based on sampling aerosol inhomogeneities was developed in the applied problem of laser remote sensing for measuring the velocity of wind. Tests of the developed algorithm were conducted for synthetic data from numerical simulations and data measured by a lidar. The algorithm developed performs processing of the field of aerosol backscattering coefficient in “RangeTime” coordinates and sufficiently increases the measurement accuracy in comparison with correlation methods
Quantum phase transitions and thermodynamic properties in highly anisotropic magnets
The systems exhibiting quantum phase transitions (QPT) are investigated
within the Ising model in the transverse field and Heisenberg model with
easy-plane single-site anisotropy. Near QPT a correspondence between parameters
of these models and of quantum phi^4 model is established. A scaling analysis
is performed for the ground-state properties. The influence of the external
longitudinal magnetic field on the ground-state properties is investigated, and
the corresponding magnetic susceptibility is calculated. Finite-temperature
properties are considered with the use of the scaling analysis for the
effective classical model proposed by Sachdev. Analytical results for the
ordering temperature and temperature dependences of the magnetization and
energy gap are obtained in the case of a small ground-state moment. The forms
of dependences of observable quantities on the bare splitting (or magnetic
field) and renormalized splitting turn out to be different. A comparison with
numerical calculations and experimental data on systems demonstrating magnetic
and structural transitions (e.g., into singlet state) is performed.Comment: 46 pages, RevTeX, 6 figure
The search for solar axions in the CAST experiment
The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment at CERN searches for solar axions with energies in the keV range. It is possible that axions are produced in the core of the sun by the interaction of thermal photons with virtual photons of strong electromagnetic fields. In this experiment, the solar axions can be reconverted to photons in the transversal field of a 9 Tesla superconducting magnet. At both ends of the 10m-long dipole magnet three different X-ray detectors were installed, which are sensitive in the interesting photon energy range. Preliminary results from the analysis of the 2004 data are presented: g GeV at 95% C.L. for axion masses m 0.02 eV. At the end of 2005, data started to be taken with a buffer gas in the magnet pipes in order to extend the sensitivity to axion masses up to 0.8 eV.The CAST (CERN Axion Solar Telescope) experiment at CERN searches for solar axions with energies in the keV range. Performance of novel VUV-sensitive Silicon Photo-Multipliers for nEXO
Liquid xenon time projection chambers are promising detectors to search for
neutrinoless double beta decay (0), due to their response
uniformity, monolithic sensitive volume, scalability to large target masses,
and suitability for extremely low background operations. The nEXO collaboration
has designed a tonne-scale time projection chamber that aims to search for
0 of \ce{^{136}Xe} with projected half-life sensitivity of
~yr. To reach this sensitivity, the design goal for nEXO is
1\% energy resolution at the decay -value (~keV).
Reaching this resolution requires the efficient collection of both the
ionization and scintillation produced in the detector. The nEXO design employs
Silicon Photo-Multipliers (SiPMs) to detect the vacuum ultra-violet, 175 nm
scintillation light of liquid xenon. This paper reports on the characterization
of the newest vacuum ultra-violet sensitive Fondazione Bruno Kessler VUVHD3
SiPMs specifically designed for nEXO, as well as new measurements on new test
samples of previously characterised Hamamatsu VUV4 Multi Pixel Photon Counters
(MPPCs). Various SiPM and MPPC parameters, such as dark noise, gain, direct
crosstalk, correlated avalanches and photon detection efficiency were measured
as a function of the applied over voltage and wavelength at liquid xenon
temperature (163~K). The results from this study are used to provide updated
estimates of the achievable energy resolution at the decay -value for the
nEXO design

A Standard format for Les Houches event files
A standard file format is proposed to store process and event information, primarily output from parton-level event generators for further use by general-purpose ones. The information content is identical with what was already defined by the Les Houches Accord five years ago, but then in terms of Fortran commonblocks. This information is embedded in a minimal XML-style structure, for clarity and to simplify parsing

Here, we demonstrate the development of universal pan-mammalian clocks, using 11,754 methylation arrays from our Mammalian Methylation Consortium, which encompass 59 tissue types across 185 mammalian species. These predictive models estimate mammalian tissue age with high accuracy (r > 0.96). Age deviations correlate with human mortality risk, mouse somatotropic axis mutations and caloric restriction. We identified specific cytosines with methylation levels that change with age across numerous species. These sites, highly enriched in polycomb repressive complex 2-binding locations, are near genes implicated in mammalian development, cancer, obesity and longevity. Our findings offer new evidence suggesting that aging is evolutionarily conserved and intertwined with developmental processes across all mammals.https://www.nature.com/nataginghj2024Zoology and EntomologySDG-15:Life on lan
On the possibility of christian philosophy
The article analyzes the correlation between theology and philosophy and discusses the fundamental possibility of creating Christian philosophy. Historical and experimental theoretical grounds for the possibility of developing Christian philosophy within the framework of Catholicism, Protestantism, and Orthodoxy are consistently analyzed. On the basis of the historical and philosophical analogy, the authors trace the origin of those positions and approaches that have received their detailed substantiation and justification for the relationship with philosophy within these confessions. The problems on the way to the creation of Christian philosophy are revealed. The role of Christian philosophy in Catholicism is examined on the basis of the Thomist concept of the coexistence of theology and philosophy. The approach to the building of Christian philosophy from the standpoint of Protestantism is represented both by its radical branch and by its alternative “cultural Protestantism”. As the specific characteristics of the Eastern Christian knowledge of God the unity of the contemplative and activity-based path, spiritual cognition and theology are singled out. The importance for Orthodox thought of the apophatic way of cognition, the apophatics of the individual instead of the apothatics of the essence is emphasized (G. Palamas, V. Lossky, D. Stăniloae). In the final statements, the authors come to the conclusion of the possibility of Christian philosophy in the Orthodox version, which is the possibility coordinated with Christian dogmatics, an experience of its living, and therefore reasonable comprehension. © SACRI
