Fermentative capacity of baker’s yeast exposed to hyperbaric stress

    Get PDF
Baker’s yeast suspensions were incubated at different pressures (from 1 bar to 6 bar) and different gases [air, O2 and a mixture of 8% (v/v) CO2, 21% O2 and N2]. Raising the air pressure from 1 bar to 6 bar stimulated cell growth but had no effect on leavening ability or viability of the cells. A 50% reduction of the CO2 produced in dough occurred with 6 bar O2 which also stopped growth. The fermentative capacity of the cells was stimulated by the cells exposure to increased CO2 partial pressure up to 0.48 bar

Sigmoid colon perforation at CT colonography secondary to a possible obstructive mechanism: report of a case

    Get PDF
We report a case of colonic perforation in CT colonography, which was observed in a sigmoid colon segment contained within an inguinal hernia. At surgery, apart from the perforation, a normal large-bowel wall was found. Although rare, perforation may occur in patients with normal bowel wall, possibly resulting from a mechanical strain caused by gaseous overdistention. Radiologists performing the procedure must be aware of this possibilit

Yarrowia lipolytica : an industrial workhorse

    Get PDF
Yarrowia lipolytica is one of the most extensively studied ‘‘non-conventional’’ yeasts, being a strictly aerobic microorganism capable of producing important metabolites and having an intense secretory activity, which justifies efforts to use it in industry (as a biocatalyst), in molecular biology and in genetics studies. Moreover, Y. lipolytica has been considered an adequate model for dimorphism studies in yeasts. Yarrowia lipolytica presents the ability to grow on Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW) as well as to degradate organic compounds, including aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, often accompanied by biosurfactants production. One of the most important products secreted by this microorganism is lipase which can be exploited for several applications in the detergent, food, pharmaceutical, and environmental industries. In addition, Y. lipolytica is able to produce citric acid and aroma from a variety of carbon sources, including sugars, alkanes, plant oils, starch hydrolysates, ethanol, and glycerol. Thus, this chapter presents an overview of Yarrowia lipolytica features and its major biotechnological applications

3 known landmarks are enough for solving planar bearing SLAM and fully reconstruct unknown inputs

    Get PDF
In this paper we show that for an observer moving in the plane with no other information than the measurement of relative bearing to three known landmarks, it is possible to completely reconstruct its position and velocity. In particular this applies to the case where no model of the vehicle, nor odometry or acceleration measurements are available. Furthermore, in the same hypotheses, the position of any further landmark can be reconstructed from its bearing only. These results are more general than what is currently known on nonlinear observability of the SLAM problem, which relies on known observer velocities. Our results are also more general than the 2D version of known structure-from-motion observability results, which assume unknown but constant velocities. The proposed method is used to build a nonlinear observer directly applicable to a range of problems from computer vision to autonomous visual navigation

    Advances in Food Allergy Diagnosis

    Get PDF
An accurate diagnosis of food allergy is extremely important to guide safe and yet not overly restrictive dietary management. The cornerstone of the diagnosis of food allergy is the clinical history; it allows appropriate selection of the allergens to be tested and interpretation of the results of allergy tests, namely Skin Prick Test (SPT), Specific IgE (sIgE) to allergen extracts and, more recently, specific IgE to allergen components and the Basophil Activation Test (BAT). SPT and sIgE to allergen extracts are very sensitive methods to detect IgE sensitization to a specific food and assess the possibility of spontaneous resolution. Cut-offs have been generated based on the probability of clinical reactivity during oral food challenges and can improve the specificity of SPT and sIgE, helping to confirm the diagnosis of food allergy. Specific IgE to allergen components refines food allergy diagnosis as it allows differentiating species-specific from cross-reactive allergens, aiding the differential diagnosis between a true and potentially severe food allergy from pollen-food syndrome or clinically irrelevant sensitization. The BAT is a new diagnostic test which has high specificity and sensitivity and can complement specific IgE, allowing the deferral of OFC in patients with a positive BAT. Depending on the likelihood of clinical allergy determined based on the combination of the history and the results of allergy tests, an oral food challenge may be indicated to confirm or exclude the diagnosis. Oral food challenge is the gold standard for the diagnosis of food allergy, but is a resource-intensive procedure with some level of risk involved; thus they are reserved for the equivocal cases. This review article discusses the above diagnostic techniques detailing the methods, utility, advantages and disadvantages.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Cystic tumor of the pancreas

    Get PDF
We describe a case of a 55-year-old female, with epigastric pain and vomiting for the last two months. Abdominal ultrasound and a CT showed the presence of a cystic mass in the pancreatic body and tail, without secondary lesions. After surgery, the pathologist stated that the lesion was a mucinous cystadenom

    Pulmonary Alveolar Microlithiasis

Routine chest x-ray of an asymptomatic patient disclosed an interstitial bilateral micronodular pattern. HRCT showed a diffuse micronodular pattern, randomly distributed in the lung parenchyma, associated with thickening of the subpleural and mediastinal interlobular septa. Individual nodules had spontaneous high density. CT-guided lung biopsy was performed, pathologist disclosed intraalveolar microliths
