Pattern Selection in the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation with Multi-Resonant Forcing
We study the excitation of spatial patterns by resonant, multi-frequency
forcing in systems undergoing a Hopf bifurcation to spatially homogeneous
oscillations. Using weakly nonlinear analysis we show that for small amplitudes
only stripe or hexagon patterns are linearly stable, whereas square patterns
and patterns involving more than three modes are unstable. In the case of
hexagon patterns up- and down-hexagons can be simultaneously stable. The
third-order, weakly nonlinear analysis predicts stable square patterns and
super-hexagons for larger amplitudes. Direct simulations show, however, that in
this regime the third-order weakly nonlinear analysis is insufficient, and
these patterns are, in fact unstable
A Prototype for the PASS Permanent All Sky Survey
A prototype system for the Permanent All Sky Survey (PASS) project is
presented. PASS is a continuous photometric survey of the entire celestial
sphere with a high temporal resolution. Its major objectives are the detection
of all giant-planet transits (with periods up to some weeks) across stars up to
mag 10.5, and to deliver continuously photometry that is useful for the study
of any variable stars. The prototype is based on CCD cameras with short focal
length optics on a fixed mount. A small dome to house it at Teide Observatory,
Tenerife, is currently being constructed. A placement at the antarctic Dome C
is also being considered. The prototype will be used for a feasibility study of
PASS, to define the best observing strategies, and to perform a detailed
characterization of the capabilities and scope of the survey. Afterwards, a
first partial sky surveying will be started with it. That first survey may be
able to detect transiting planets during its first few hundred hours of
operation. It will also deliver a data set around which software modules
dealing with the various scientific objectives of PASS will be developed. The
PASS project is still in its early phase and teams interested in specific
scientific objectives, in providing technical expertise, or in participating
with own observations are invited to collaborate.Comment: Accepted for Astronomische Nachrichten (special issue for 3rd Potsdam

Instantaneous cell migration velocity may be ill-defined
Cell crawling is critical to biological development, homeostasis and disease.
In many cases, cell trajectories are quasi-random-walk. In vitro assays on flat
surfaces often described such quasi-random-walk cell trajectories as
approximations to a solution of a Langevin process. However, experiments show
quasi-diffusive behavior at small timescales, indicating that instantaneous
velocity and velocity autocorrelations are not well-defined. We propose to
characterize mean-squared cell displacement using a modified F\"urth equation
with three temporal and spatial regimes: short- and long-time/range diffusion
and intermediate time/range ballistic motion. This analysis collapses
mean-squared displacements of previously published experimental data onto a
single-parameter family of curves, allowing direct comparison between movement
in different cell types, and between experiments and numerical simulations. Our
method also show that robust cell-motility quantification requires an
experiment with a maximum interval between images of a few percent of the
cell-motion persistence time or less, and a duration of a few
orders-of-magnitude longer than the cell-motion persistence time or more.Comment: 5 pages, plus Supplemental materia

Threat Landscape and Good Practice Guide for Software Defined Networks/5G
5G represents the next major phase of mobile telecommunication systems and network architectures beyond the current 4G standards, aiming at extreme broadband and ultra-robust, low latency connectivity, to enable the programmable connectivity for the Internet of Everything2. Despite the significant debate on the technical specifications and the technological maturity of 5G, which are under discussion in various fora3, 5G is expected to affect positively and significantly several industry sectors ranging from ICT to industry sectors such as car and other manufacturing, health and agriculture in the period up to and beyond 2020. 5G will be driven by the influence of software on network functions, known as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). The key concept that underpins SDN is the logical centralization of network control functions by decoupling the control and packet forwarding functionality of the network. NFV complements this vision through the virtualization of these functionalities based on recent advances in general server and enterprise IT virtualization. Considering the technological maturity of the technologies that 5G can leverage on, SDN is the one that is moving faster from development to production. To realize the business potential of SDN/5G, a number of technical issues related to the design and operation of Software Defined Networks need to be addressed. Amongst them, SDN/5G security is one of the key issues, that needs to be addressed comprehensively in order to avoid missing the business opportunities arising from SDN/5G. In this report, we review threats and potential compromises related to the security of SDN/5G networks. More specifically, this report contains a review of the emerging threat landscape of 5G networks with particular focus on Software Defined Networking. It also considers security of NFV and radio network access. To provide a comprehensive account of the emerging threat SDN/5G landscape, this report has identified related network assets and the security threats, challenges and risks arising for these assets. Driven by the identified threats and risks, this report has also reviewed and identified existing security mechanisms and good practices for SDN/5G/NFV, and based on these it has analysed gaps and provided technical, policy and organizational recommendations for proactively enhancing the security of SDN/5G
Introduction of WO3 Layer in a Cu-Based Al2O3 Conductive Bridge RAM System for Robust Cycling and Large Memory Window
In this paper, we optimize a WO3\Al2O3 bilayer serving as the electrolyte of a conductive bridge RAM device using a Cu-based supply layer. By introducing a WO3 layer formed by thermal oxidation of a W plug, the hourglass shape of the conductive filament is desirably controlled, enabling excellent switching behavior. We demonstrate a clear improvement of the microstructure and density of the WO3 layer by increasing the oxidation time and temperature, resulting in a strong increase of the high-resistance-state breakdown voltage. The high quality WO3 microstructure allows thus the use of a larger reset pulse amplitude resulting both in larger memory window and failure-free write cycling.1197Ysciescopu
Rituximab plus chemotherapy provides no clinical benefit in a peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified with aberrant expression of CD20 and CD79a. A case report and review of the literature
Peripheral T-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) is the most common entity of mature T-cell neoplasms. PTCL-NOS generally has an aggressive behavior and is often refractory to standard therapy. Only a few cases of PTCL with aberrant expression of B-cell antigens have been reported so far. This phenotypic aberrancy may lead to misdiagnosis as B-cell non- Hodgkin lymphomas and eventual inappropriate patient management, whereas in an accurately diagnosed PTCL, the presence of CD20 may appear as an appealing therapeutic target. In this setting, response to anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody in combination with chemotherapy has been poorly explored. We describe the case of a 59-year-old male diagnosed by a pathological and molecular approach as PTCL-NOS with aberrant co-expression of the B-cell antigens CD20 and CD79a, which proved non-responsive to the addition of rituximab to standard polychemotherapy. This case highlights that the presence of CD20 in PTCL may be misleading in the diagnosis and also act as a lure for the clinician to adopt a rituximab-based treatment, the effectiveness of which is undefined as the molecular mechanisms underlying B-cell marker expression in PTCL
