Using high-level construal and perceptions of changeability to promote self-change over self-protection motives in response to negative feedback

Although negative feedback can provide useful information with which to guide future self-improvement efforts, it also presents short-term affective costs. We propose that construal level, jointly with the perceived changeability of the feedback domain, determines whether people choose to accept or dismiss such information. Whereas low-level construal promotes short-term self-protection motivation (promoting dismissal), high-level construal promotes long-term self-change motivation (promoting acceptance) – to the extent that change is perceived as possible. Four studies support this hypothesis and examine underlying cognitive and motivational mechanisms. The present work may provide an integrative theoretical framework for understanding when people will be open to and accept negative diagnostic information, and has important practical implications for promoting self-change efforts.A five-year embargo was granted for this item

The Treatment of Chronic Uremia

I will begin by telling a little about the development of chronic dialysis. In 1959 we were working on a system to prevent uremia in acute renal failure. We were trying to develop a system to which we could hook the patient for as long as a week, so that we would exactly mimic his normal kidney function during the period of acute renal failure, and make his prognosis that of a patient who had kidneys. The system worked reasonably well. We had to make a lot of modifications, such as using a Skeggs-Leonard dialyzer with low resistance. We used a large deep freeze as a dialysate reservoir because we could not afford to change the bath ever few hours. The patients was on continuously. We had to cool the external circuit to control clotting problems and infection. We actually had patients on this system for as long as two weeks. It was important to us that we had this system in operation at the time we first devised the cannulas
