Fusion of radioactive 132^{132}Sn with 64^{64}Ni

Evaporation residue and fission cross sections of radioactive 132^{132}Sn on 64^{64}Ni were measured near the Coulomb barrier. A large sub-barrier fusion enhancement was observed. Coupled-channel calculations including inelastic excitation of the projectile and target, and neutron transfer are in good agreement with the measured fusion excitation function. When the change in nuclear size and shift in barrier height are accounted for, there is no extra fusion enhancement in 132^{132}Sn+64^{64}Ni with respect to stable Sn+64^{64}Ni. A systematic comparison of evaporation residue cross sections for the fusion of even 112−124^{112-124}Sn and 132^{132}Sn with 64^{64}Ni is presented.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure

    Anharmonicities of giant dipole excitations

The role of anharmonic effects on the excitation of the double giant dipole resonance is investigated in a simple macroscopic model.Perturbation theory is used to find energies and wave functions of the anharmonic ascillator. The cross sections for the electromagnetic excitation of the one- and two-phonon giant dipole resonances in energetic heavy-ion collisions are then evaluated through a semiclassical coupled-channel calculation. It is argued that the variations of the strength of the anharmonic potential should be combined with appropriate changes in the oscillator frequency,in order to keep the giant dipole resonance energy consistent with the experimental value. When this is taken into account, the effects of anharmonicities on the double giant dipole resonance excitation probabilities are small and cannot account for the well-known discrepancy between theory and experiment

Elastic scattering and breakup of 17^F at 10 MeV/nucleon

Angular distributions of fluorine and oxygen produced from 170 MeV 17^F incident on 208^Pb were measured. The elastic scattering data are in good agreement with optical model calculations using a double-folding potential and parameters similar to those obtained from 16^O+208^Pb. A large yield of oxygen was observed near \theta_lab=36 deg. It is reproduced fairly well by a calculation of the (17^F,16^O) breakup, which is dominated by one-proton stripping reactions. The discrepancy between our previous coincidence measurement and theoretical predictions was resolved by including core absorption in the present calculation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    One-neutron transfer study of 135Te and 137Xe by particle-γ coincidence spectroscopy: The ν1i13/2 state at N = 83

Additional information is reported on single-neutron states above the doubly closed-shell nucleus 132Sn. A radioactive ion beam of 134Te(N=82) at 565 MeV and a stable ion beam of 136Xe(N=82) at 560 MeV were used to study single-neutron states in the N=8

Transition from Prolate to Oblate to Triaxial Shapes in 15sYb

Abstract The decay of the entry states in ISIYb populated in the reactions of 149 MeV ,oNe with ,44Nd and lUNd has been investigated with a 4" multidetector system gated by a Ge counter. The average excitation energy, the ,.-ray spectra and the angular distribu tions as a function of multiplicity show several changes in the ,.-ray decay. These changes suggest a transition from prolate to particle aligned oblate connguration at low spin. At 1-38-48 collective transitions with dipole and quad rupole component possibly built on high K single particle states are observed. Furthennore, above 1-48 the dipole component disappears suggesting a further change toward more triaxial shape

Breakup of 17^{17}F on 208^{208}Pb near the Coulomb barrier

Angular distributions of oxygen produced in the breakup of 17^{17}F incident on a 208^{208}Pb target have been measured around the grazing angle at beam energies of 98 and 120 MeV. The data are dominated by the proton stripping mechanism and are well reproduced by dynamical calculations. The measured breakup cross section is approximately a factor of 3 less than that of fusion at 98 MeV. The influence of breakup on fusion is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
