Middle Archaic Complex of Northwest Arkansas

After the end of the Wisconsin glacial there occurred an interval called the Neothermal in the southwestern portion of the United States. The Neothermal is comprised of three consecutive tempera-ture intervals: the Anathermal, Altithermal, and Medithermal, re-spectively characterized by rising, maximum, and moderate tempera-ture. The Altithermal was the only period of extreme arid climate which has existed in North America since the Mankato glacial sub-stage (Antevs 1955). During this "long drought " Arkansas developed a typical desert environment characterized by round clumps of rushes which gave rise to prairie mounds (Quinn 1961), and exten-sive alluviation took place. Contained within alluvial material de-posited during the Altithermal are artifacts of the people who lived and hunted in the dry climate of that day. It is through projectile joints collected from the alluvium that an age determination of the alluvium willbe made

Elastocaloric response of PbTiO3 predicted from a first-principles effective Hamiltonian

A first-principles based effective Hamiltonian is used within a molecular dynamics simulation to study the elastocaloric effect in PbTiO3. It is found that the transition temperature is a linear function of uniaxial tensile stress. Negative temperature change is calculated, when the uniaxial tensile stress is switched off, as a function of initial temperature Delta-T(T_initial). It is predicted that the formation of domain structures under uniaxial tensile stress degrades the effectiveness of the elastocaloric effect.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, published in JPS

The Copyright Crusher: How Apple’s iTunes Is a Vehicle Designed for Copyright Infringement and Apple’s Legal Liability from Its Creation

    Get PDF
Authors of original works (such as music, books, et cetera) have certain exclusive rights including, but not limited to, the reproduction of copyrighted works in copies and the preparation of derivative works. Apple’s iTunes is a vehicle for infringement. The conversion of compact discs (“CDs”) to a compressed format for portable music players such as iPods, iPhones, iPads, and computers violates a copyright holder’s exclusive rights. This Article discusses the fundamental issue of copyright protections, the way iTunes facilitates the infringement of these rights, and the legal liability of Apple for creation of this software
