    Limnological, Ichthyological, and Parasitological Investigations on Arkansas Reservoris in Relation to Water Quality

    Lake Fort Smith, a 525 acre (212 ha) reservoir, was impounded in 1936 as a water supply for the city of Fort Smith. The reservoir is located on Clear Creek (Frog Bayou), a tributary of the Arkansas River, in the Boston Mountains 28 miles (45 km) northeast of the city of Fort Smith in Crawford County, Arkansas. A map and morphometric characteristics of Lake Fort Smith are given in Fig. 1 and Table I (Hoffman, 1951; Nelson, 1952). In 1956 Lake Shepherd Springs, a 750 acre (304 ha) impoundment, was created one mile upstream of Lake Fort Smith (Rorie, 1961). Both lakes have a shale substrate and are subject to periods of high turbidity. The 2 two lakes have a water shed of 65 square mile area (168 km ) of mountainous oak-hickory forest. Lake Shepherd Springs has not acted as a settling basin for sediments; thus, the upper portion of Lake Fort Smith has numerous shallow areas with a mud bottom supporting various submergent and emergent aquatic plants. The lower portion of the lake has a rocky, shale substrate with only limited emergent vegetation

    Assessing numbers and faces: a prerequisite for improving access to lymphatic filariasis morbidity care

    Concerted efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis worldwide have registered success; multiple rounds of mass drug administration have led to the interruption of transmission in many previously endemic areas. However, the management of patients with established clinical disease (e.g., lymphoedema, hydrocoele and acute dermatolymphangioadenitis) has not been addressed sufficiently. Two recent studies from Malawi underscore the need for accurate epidemiological and clinical data, and comprehensive morbidity assessments across various domains of daily life. Addressing these issues will guide the implementation of programmes to improve access to treatment and disability prevention for affected individuals in Malawi and beyon

    The Lithium Depletion Boundary and the Age of the Young Open Cluster IC~2391

    We have obtained new photometry and intermediate resolution (Δλ=2.7\Delta \lambda = 2.7 \AA\ ) spectra of 19 of these objects (14.9 ≤\le IcI_c ≤\le 17.5) in order to confirm cluster membership. We identify 15 of our targets as likely cluster members based on their VRIVRI photometry, spectral types, radial velocity, and Hα\alpha emission strengths. Higher S/N spectra were obtained for 8 of these probable cluster members in order to measure the strength of the lithium 6708 \AA\ doublet and thus obtain an estimate of the cluster's age. One of these 8 stars has a definite lithium detection and two other (fainter) stars have possible lithium detections. A color-magnitude diagram for our program objects shows that the lithium depletion boundary in IC~2391 is at IcI_c=16.2. Using recent theoretical model predictions, we derive an age for IC~2391 of 53±\pm5 Myr. While this is considerably older than the age most commonly attributed for this cluster (∼\sim35 Myr) this result for IC~2391 is comparable those recently derived for the Pleiades and Alpha Persei clusters and can be explained by new models for high mass stars that incorporate a modest amount of convective core overshooting.Comment: ApJ Letters, acccepte

    Cosmology of Axions and Moduli: A Dynamical Systems Approach

    This paper is concerned with string cosmology and the dynamics of multiple scalar fields in potentials that can become negative, and their features as (Early) Dark Energy models. Our point of departure is the "String Axiverse", a scenario that motivates the existence of cosmologically light axion fields as a generic consequence of string theory. We couple such an axion to its corresponding modulus. We give a detailed presentation of the rich cosmology of such a model, ranging from the setting of initial conditions on the fields during inflation, to the asymptotic future. We present some simplifying assumptions based on the fixing of the axion decay constant faf_a, and on the effective field theory when the modulus trajectory is adiabatic, and find the conditions under which these assumptions break down. As a by-product of our analysis, we find that relaxing the assumption of fixed faf_a leads to the appearance of a new meta-stable de-Sitter region for the modulus without the need for uplifting by an additional constant. A dynamical systems analysis reveals the existence of many fixed point attractors, repellers and saddle points, which we analyse in detail. We also provide geometric interpretations of the phase space. The fixed points can be used to bound the couplings in the model. A systematic scan of certain regions of parameter space reveals that the future evolution of the universe in this model can be rich, containing multiple epochs of accelerated expansion.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, comments welcome, v2 minor correction

    The Reddest Quasars

    In a survey of quasar candidates selected by matching the FIRST and 2MASS catalogs, we have found two extraordinarily red quasars. FIRST J013435.7-093102 is a 1 Jy source at z=2.216 and has B-K > 10, while FIRST J073820.1+275045 is a 2.5 mJy source at z=1.985 with B-K = 8.4. FIRST J073820.1+275045 has strong absorption lines of MgII and CIV in the rest frame of the quasar and is highly polarized in the rest frame ultraviolet, strongly favoring the interpretation that its red spectral energy distribution is caused by dust reddening local to the quasar. FIRST J073820.1+275045 is thus one of the few low radio-luminosity, highly dust-reddened quasars known. The available observational evidence for FIRST J013435.7-093102 leads us to conclude that it too is reddened by dust. We show that FIRST J013435.7-093102 is gravitationally lensed, increasing the number of known lensed, extremely dust-reddened quasars to at least three, including MG0414-0534 and PKS1830-211. We discuss the implications of whether these objects are reddened by dust in the host or lensing galaxies. If reddened by their local environment, then we estimate that between 10 and 20% of the radio-loud quasar population is reddened by dust in the host galaxy. The discovery of FIRST J073820.1+275045 and objects now emerging from X-ray surveys suggests the existence of an analogous radio-quiet red quasar population. Such objects will be entirely missed by standard radio or optical quasar surveys. If dust in the lensing galaxies is primarily responsible for the extreme redness of the lensed quasars, then an untold number of gravitationally lensed quasars are being overlooked.Comment: AASTEX 24 pp., 7 figs; accepted by ApJ.     The FIRST Radio-Loud Broad Absorption Line QSO and Evidence for a Hidden Population of Quasars

    We have discovered two low-ionization broad absorption line quasars in programs to obtain optical spectra for radio-selected quasar candidates from the VLA FIRST Survey (Becker, White, & Helfand 1995). Both belong to the extremely rare class of BAL QSOs that exhibit narrow absorption lines from metastable excited levels of Fe II and Fe III. Until now, there was just a single object in this class, 0059-2735 (Hazard et al. 1987). In addition, one of our new objects is the first known radio-loud BAL QSO. The properties of these three unusual objects suggest a trend of increasing radio luminosity with the amount of absorption to the quasar, and are perhaps transition objects between radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars. The two new objects are from a radio-selected sample comprising less than 200 quasars; one is heavily attenuated at optical wavelengths in the observed frame. These objects would be easily overlooked by most optical QSO searches; their abundance in the radio sample suggests that they may be representatives of a largely undetected component of the quasar population, perhaps as numerous as ordinary low-ionization BAL QSOs which constitute 1-2% of all QSOs.Comment: 4 pages plus 1 table and 1 figure; AASTEX 4.0.     BRAFV600E mutations in malignant melanoma are associated with increased expressions of BAALC

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Bachground</p> <p>Activating <it>BRAF </it>mutations are present in approximately 50% of melanomas. Although different downstream target genes of the most common mutant V600E have been identified, the contribution of activating <it>BRAF </it>mutations to malignant transformation needs further clarification.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Microarray gene analysis was performed for human melanoma cell lines harboring BRAF<sup>V600E </sup>mutations in comparison to cell lines without this mutation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This analysis revealed a more than two fold down-regulation of 43 and an increase of 39 gene products. <it>BAALC </it>(<it>Brain and acute Leukaemia, cytoplasmatic</it>) was most prominently regulated, since it was up-regulated in mutated cell lines by a mean of 11.45. Real time PCR analyses with RNA from melanoma cell lines (n = 30) confirmed the <it>BRAF</it>-activation dependent up-regulation of <it>BAALC</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p><it>BAALC</it>, which has been associated with cell dedifferentiation and migration, may function as a downstream effector of activating <it>BRAF </it>mutations during melanomagenesis.</p
