The Pharmacopsychometric Triangle to Illustrate the Effectiveness of T-PEMF Concomitant with Antidepressants in Treatment Resistant Patients: A Double-Blind, Randomised, Sham-Controlled Trial Revisited with Focus on the Patient-Reported Outcomes
Background. Our T-PEMF trial has been revisited with focus on the pharmacopsychometric triangle in which effect size is used when comparing wanted versus unwanted clinical effects and quality of life as outcomes. In this analysis, we have especially focused on the self-reported HAM-D6. Methods. The antidepressive medication which the patients were resistant to was kept unchanged during the five weeks of active versus sham T-PEMF. Results. In total 21, patients received active T-PEMF, and 19 patients received sham T-PEMF. The effect size was 1.02 and 0.90, respectively, on HAM-D6 and HAM-D6-S. Concerning side effects, the active T-PEMF reduced the baseline score on concentration problems with an effect size of 0.44 while inducing more autonomic symptoms than sham T-PEMF with an effect size of −0.41. The advantage of active over sham T-PEMF obtained an effect size of 0.48. Conclusion. Active T-PEMF was found superior to sham T-PEMF within the pharmacopsychometric triangle with a clinically significant effect size level above 0.40
A Prismatic Analyser concept for Neutron Spectrometers
A development in modern neutron spectroscopy is to avoid the need of large
samples. We demonstrate how small samples together with the right choice of
analyser and detector components makes distance collimation an important
concept in crystal analyser spectrometers. We further show that this opens new
possibilities where neutrons with different energies are reflected by the same
analyser but counted in different detectors, thus improving both energy
resolution and total count rate compared to conventional spectrometers. The
technique can be combined with advanced focusing geometries and with
multiplexing instrument designs. We present a combination of simulations and
data with 3 energies from one analyser. The data was taken on a prototype
installed at PSI, Switzerland, and shows excellent agreement with the
predictions. Typical improvements will be 2 times finer resolution and a factor
1.9 in flux gain compared to a Rowland geometry or 3 times finer resolution and
a factor 3.2 in flux gain compared to a single flat analyser slab
Rotated stripe order and its competition with superconductivity in LaSrCuO
We report the observation of a bulk charge modulation in
LaSrCuO (LSCO) with a characteristic in-plane wave-vector
of (0.236, ), with =0.011 r.l.u. The transverse shift of
the ordering wave-vector indicates the presence of rotated charge-stripe
ordering, demonstrating that the charge ordering is not pinned to the Cu-O bond
direction. On cooling through the superconducting transition, we find an abrupt
change in the growth of the charge correlations and a suppression of the charge
order parameter indicating competition between the two orderings. Orthorhombic
LSCO thus helps bridge the apparent disparities between the behavior previously
observed in the tetragonal "214" cuprates and the orthorhombic yttrium and
bismuth-based cuprates and thus lends strong support to the idea that there is
a common motif to charge order in all cuprate families.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figue
Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8
We report a neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation muSR study of static
and dynamical magnetic properties of BaCo2V2O8, a quasi-one-dimensional
spin-chain system. A proposed model for the antiferromagnetic structure
includes: a propagation vector k_AF = (0, 0, 1), independent of external
magnetic fields for fields below a critical value H_c(T). The ordered moments,
of 2.18 \mu_B per Co ion, are aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. Within
the screw chains, along the c axis, the moments are arranged
antiferromagnetically. In the basal planes the spins are arranged
ferromagnetically (forming zig-zags paths) along one of the axis and
antiferromagnetically along the other. The temperature dependence of the
sub-lattice magnetization is consistent with the expectations of the 3D Ising
model. A similar behavior is observed for the internal static fields at
different muon stopping sites. Muon time spectra measured at weak longitudinal
fields and temperatures much higher than T_N can be well described using a
single muon site with an exponential muon spin relaxation that gradually
changes into an stretched exponential on approaching T_N. The
temperature-induced changes of the relaxation suggest that the Co fluctuations
dramatically slow down and the system becomes less homogeneous as it approaches
the antiferromagnetic state.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure
A Study of Competing Designs for a Liquidity-Saving Mechanism
We study two designs for a liquidity-saving mechanism (LSM), a queuing arrangement used with an interbank settlement system. We consider an environment where banks are subjected to liquidity shocks. Banks must make the decision to send, queue, or delay their payments after observing a noisy signal of the shock. With a balance-reactive LSM, banks can set a balance threshold below which payments are not released from the queue. Banks can choose their threshold such that the release of a payment from the queue is conditional on the liquidity shock. With a receipt-reactive LSM, a payment is released from the queue if an offsetting payment is received, regardless of the liquidity shock. We find that these two designs have opposite effects on different types of payments. Payments that are costly to delay will be settled at least as early, or earlier, with a receipt-reactive LSM. Payments that are not costly to delay will always be delayed with a receipt-reactive LSM, while some of them will be queued and settled early with a balance-reactive LSM. We also show that parameter values will determine which system provides higher welfare
What is the impact of problem loans on Japanese bank productivity growth?
This paper examines for the first time the impact of problem loans on Japanese productivity growth. We exploit a new data set of Japanese problem loans classified into two categories: bankrupt and restructured loans. We opt for a novel and flexible productivity growth decomposition that allows to measure the direct impact of these problem loans on productivity growth. The results reveal that Japanese bank productivity growth was severely constrained by bankrupt and restructured loans early in 2000s, whilst some persistence of the negative impact of problem loans on productivity growth is observed in the late 2000s. Thereafter, there is only some partial recovery in the productivity growth from 2012 to 2015. Further, we also perform cluster analysis to examine convergence or divergence across regions and over time. We observe limited convergence, though Regional Banks seem to form clusters in some regions
Acute effects of kisspeptin administration on bone metabolism in healthy men
CONTEXT: Osteoporosis results from disturbances in bone formation and resorption. Recent non-human data suggests that the reproductive hormone, kisspeptin, directly stimulates osteoblast differentiation in vitro and thus could have clinical therapeutic potential. However, the effects of kisspeptin on human bone metabolism are currently unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of kisspeptin on human bone metabolism in vitro and in vivo. DESIGN: In vitro study: Mono- and co-cultures of human osteoblasts and osteoclasts treated with kisspeptin. Clinical study: Randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, two-way crossover clinical study in twenty-six men investigating the effects of acute kisspeptin administration (90 minutes) on human bone metabolism, with blood sampling every 30 minutes to +90 minutes. PARTICIPANTS: In vitro study: Twelve male blood donors and eight patients undergoing hip replacement surgery. Clinical Study: Twenty-six healthy eugonadal men (age 26.8±5.8 years). INTERVENTION: Kisspeptin (versus placebo). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Changes in bone parameters and turnover markers. RESULTS: Incubation with kisspeptin in vitro increased alkaline phosphatase levels in human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by 41.1% (P=0.0022), and robustly inhibited osteoclastic resorptive activity by up to 53.4% (P<0.0001), in a dose-dependent manner. Kisspeptin administration to healthy men increased osteoblast activity, as evidenced by a 20.3% maximal increase in total osteocalcin (P=0.021) and 24.3% maximal increase in carboxylated osteocalcin levels (P=0.014). CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, these data provide the first human evidence that kisspeptin promotes osteogenic differentiation of osteoblast progenitors and inhibits bone resorption in vitro. Furthermore, kisspeptin acutely increases the bone formation marker osteocalcin but not resorption markers in healthy men, independent of downstream sex-steroid levels. Kisspeptin could therefore have clinical therapeutic application in the treatment of osteoporosis
