La production des guides du patrimoine au Brésil, caractérisée par son extrême hétérogénéité, s’appuie dans la plupart des cas sur des listes de biens classés ou sur des inventaires qui ne garantissent pas la protection légale des édifices et qui sont souvent limités à de brèves descriptions sans ou avec peu d’analyses. Teoria da restauração, de Cesare Brandi: seis décadas de sua publicação

This article aims to analyse some of the characteristics of Theory of Restoration, by Cesare Brandi, whose first edition is from 1963. The intention is not to exhaustively treat the book, nor the bibliography about the author and his work, but to offer contributions for an informed reading. Thus, an extensive bibliography was collected, which includes both old and recent texts, which refer to even broader references. Before starting the analysis of the book, aspects of Brandi’s biography are examined, seeking to clarify misunderstandings that interfere, in Brazil, with the appreciation of his work and his actuation. Then, the nature of the Theory and the way it is structured is treated, to, later, face the concept of restoration and some of its implications. Next, the unfolding of the text and its current perspectives are examined, punctuating certain themes, without intending to exhaust them: the restoration-technique relation; contemporary art restoration; preventive restoration and the urban scale; architectural restoration. Finally, considerations are made on the importance of tackling restoration issues in a reasoned manner and based on principles.Este artigo visa a analisar algumas das características do livro Teoria da restauração, de Cesare Brandi, cuja primeira edição é de 1963. Não se pretende aqui esgotar a abordagem do livro nem tratar exaustivamente a bibliografia sobre o autor e a obra, mas oferecer contribuições para uma leitura circunstanciada. Assim, reuniu-se uma extensa bibliografia, que inclui tanto textos antigos quanto recentes, que remetem a referências ainda mais amplas. Antes de iniciar a análise do livro, examina-se a biografia de Brandi, buscando esclarecer malentendidos que interferem, no Brasil, na apreciação de sua obra e de sua atuação. Feito isso, a natureza do livro e o modo como se estrutura é tratado para, depois, enfrentar o conceito de restauração e algumas de suas implicações. A seguir são examinados os desdobramentos do texto e suas perspectivas atuais, pontuando certos temas, sem a pretensão de esgotá-los: a relação restauro-técnica; restauro da arte contemporânea; a restauração preventiva e a escala urbana; a restauração arquitetônica. Por fim, são feitas considerações sobre a importância de enfrentar temas de restauro de modo fundamentado e com base em princípios

Preservation of historical monuments in France after the Revolution and throughout the 19th century: a decisive period for theoretical elaboration

O texto trata da preservação dos monumentos históricos na França no período que se segue à Revolução Francesa e durante o século XIX. A reação ao "vandalismo" revolucionário, que ameaçava destruir parte significativa da herança artística do país, resultou em incipientes providências oficiais visando à tutela de monumentos históricos. No decorrer do século XIX, sucederam- se variados tipos de experiências, com êxitos distintos, para fazer face ao problema. Sobressaem os importantes passos dados no país para a efetivação da restauração como campo disciplinar, a formulação de preceitos teóricos para guiar as intervenções, o estabelecimento e consolidação da práxis do restauro, a formação de corpos profissionais dedicados ao campo, a criação de leis para a tutela dos monumentos históricos e o estabelecimento de serviços públicos especificamente dedicados a esse fim. A rica experiência francesa no período lançou importantes bases para a fundamentação da restauração como entendida atualmente.The paper deals with the preservation of historical monuments in France in the period following the French Revolution, and throughout the 19th century. The reaction against the revolutionary "vandalism", which threatened a significant part of the countrys cultural heritage with destruction, resulted in incipient official measures regarding the conservation of historical monuments. In the course of the 19th century, several kinds of experimental restoration works were conducted in order to face such problem. As a consequence, steps were taken in France towards establishing restoration as a disciplinary field, formulating more consistent theoretical rules to guide the interventions, establishing and consolidating the praxis of restoration, organizing professional corps dedicated to this area, creating laws to regulate the protection of historic buildings, and establishing public services specifically dedicated to such purpose.
