Nowadays the biggest countries that produce raw hides are China, India, Brazil and the USA; and major tanning companies are in Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Italy, South Korea, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, Spain, Turkey and the USA. The top exporter of raw hides and skins is the USA. During exportation many microbes especially bacteria and archaea can damage the raw hides and skins.
